Romani 9
1 Io dico la verità in Cristo, non mento, la mia coscienza me lo attesta per lo Spirito Santo:
Truth I say in Christ, I lie not, my conscience bearing testimony with me in the Holy Spirit,
2 io ho una grande tristezza e un continuo dolore nel cuore mio;
that I have great grief and unceasing pain in my heart —
3 perché vorrei essere io stesso anatema, separato da Cristo, per amor dei miei fratelli, miei parenti secondo la carne,
for I was wishing, I myself, to be anathema from the Christ — for my brethren, my kindred, according to the flesh,
4 che sono Israeliti, ai quali appartengono l’adozione e la gloria e i patti e la legislazione e il culto e le promesse;
who are Israelites, whose [is] the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the lawgiving, and the service, and the promises,
5 dei quali sono i padri, e dai quali è venuto, secondo la carne, il Cristo, che è sopra tutte le cose Dio benedetto in eterno. Amen. (aiōn g165)
whose [are] the fathers, and of whom [is] the Christ, according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed to the ages. Amen. (aiōn g165)
6 Però non è che la parola di Dio sia caduta a terra; perché non tutti i discendenti da Israele sono Israele;
And it is not possible that the word of God hath failed; for not all who [are] of Israel are these Israel;
7 né per il fatto che son progenie d’Abramo, son tutti figliuoli d’Abramo; anzi: In Isacco ti sarà nominata una progenie.
nor because they are seed of Abraham [are] all children, but — 'in Isaac shall a seed be called to thee;'
8 Cioè, non i figliuoli della carne sono figliuoli di Dio: ma i figliuoli della promessa son considerati come progenie.
that is, the children of the flesh — these [are] not children of God; but the children of the promise are reckoned for seed;
9 Poiché questa è una parola di promessa: In questa stagione io verrò, e Sara avrà un figliuolo.
for the word of promise [is] this; 'According to this time I will come, and there shall be to Sarah a son.'
10 Non solo; ma anche a Rebecca avvenne la medesima cosa quand’ebbe concepito da uno stesso uomo, vale a dire Isacco nostro padre, due gemelli;
And not only [so], but also Rebecca, having conceived by one — Isaac our father —
11 poiché, prima che fossero nati e che avessero fatto alcun che di bene o di male, affinché rimanesse fermo il proponimento dell’elezione di Dio, che dipende non dalle opere ma dalla volontà di colui che chiama,
(for they being not yet born, neither having done anything good or evil, that the purpose of God, according to choice, might remain; not of works, but of Him who is calling, ) it was said to her —
12 le fu detto: Il maggiore servirà al minore;
'The greater shall serve the less;'
13 secondo che è scritto: Ho amato Giacobbe, ma ho odiato Esaù.
according as it hath been written, 'Jacob I did love, and Esau I did hate.'
14 Che diremo dunque? V’è forse ingiustizia in Dio? Così non sia.
What, then, shall we say? unrighteousness [is] with God? let it not be!
15 Poiché Egli dice a Mosè: Io avrò mercé di chi avrò mercé, e avrò compassione di chi avrò compassione.
for to Moses He saith, 'I will do kindness to whom I do kindness, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion;'
16 Non dipende dunque né da chi vuole né da chi corre, ma da Dio che fa misericordia.
so, then — not of him who is willing, nor of him who is running, but of God who is doing kindness:
17 Poiché la Scrittura dice a Faraone: Appunto per questo io t’ho suscitato: per mostrare in te la mia potenza, e perché il mio nome sia pubblicato per tutta la terra.
for the Writing saith to Pharaoh — 'For this very thing I did raise thee up, that I might shew in thee My power, and that My name might be declared in all the land;'
18 Così dunque Egli fa misericordia a chi vuole, e indura chi vuole.
so, then, to whom He willeth, He doth kindness, and to whom He willeth, He doth harden.
19 Tu allora mi dirai: Perché si lagna Egli ancora? Poiché chi può resistere alla sua volontà?
Thou wilt say, then, to me, 'Why yet doth He find fault? for His counsel who hath resisted?'
20 Piuttosto, o uomo, chi sei tu che replichi a Dio? La cosa formata dirà essa a colui che la formò: Perché mi facesti così?
nay, but, O man, who art thou that art answering again to God? shall the thing formed say to Him who did form [it], Why me didst thou make thus?
21 Il vasaio non ha egli potestà sull’argilla, da trarre dalla stessa massa un vaso per uso nobile, e un altro per uso ignobile?
hath not the potter authority over the clay, out of the same lump to make the one vessel to honour, and the one to dishonour?
22 E che v’è mai da replicare se Dio, volendo mostrare la sua ira e far conoscere la sua potenza, ha sopportato con molta longanimità de’ vasi d’ira preparati per la perdizione,
And if God, willing to shew the wrath and to make known His power, did endure, in much long suffering, vessels of wrath fitted for destruction,
23 e se, per far conoscere le ricchezze della sua gloria verso de’ vasi di misericordia che avea già innanzi preparati per la gloria,
and that He might make known the riches of His glory on vessels of kindness, that He before prepared for glory, whom also He did call — us —
24 li ha anche chiamati (parlo di noi) non soltanto di fra i Giudei ma anche di fra i Gentili?
not only out of Jews, but also out of nations,
25 Così Egli dice anche in Osea: Io chiamerò mio popolo quello che non era mio popolo, e “amata” quella che non era amata;
as also in Hosea He saith, 'I will call what [is] not My people — My people; and her not beloved — Beloved,
26 e avverrà che nel luogo ov’era loro stato detto: “Voi non siete mio popolo”, quivi saran chiamati figliuoli dell’Iddio vivente.
and it shall be — in the place where it was said to them, Ye [are] not My people; there they shall be called sons of the living God.'
27 E Isaia esclama riguardo a Israele: Quand’anche il numero dei figliuoli d’Israele fosse come la rena del mare, il rimanente solo sarà salvato;
And Isaiah doth cry concerning Israel, 'If the number of the sons of Israel may be as the sand of the sea, the remnant shall be saved;
28 perché il Signore eseguirà la sua parola sulla terra, in modo definitivo e reciso.
for a matter He is finishing, and is cutting short in righteousness, because a matter cut short will the Lord do upon the land.
29 E come Isaia avea già detto prima: Se il Signor degli eserciti non ci avesse lasciato un seme, saremmo divenuti come Sodoma e saremmo stati simili a Gomorra.
and according as Isaiah saith before, 'Except the Lord of Sabaoth did leave to us a seed, as Sodom we had become, and as Gomorrah we had been made like.'
30 Che diremo dunque? Diremo che i Gentili, i quali non cercavano la giustizia, hanno conseguito la giustizia, ma la giustizia che vien dalla fede;
What, then, shall we say? that nations who are not pursuing righteousness did attain to righteousness, and righteousness that [is] of faith,
31 mentre Israele, che cercava la legge della giustizia, non ha conseguito la legge della giustizia.
and Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, at a law of righteousness did not arrive;
32 Perché? Perché l’ha cercata non per fede, ma per opere. Essi hanno urtato nella pietra d’intoppo,
wherefore? because — not by faith, but as by works of law; for they did stumble at the stone of stumbling,
33 siccome è scritto: Ecco, io pongo in Sion una pietra d’intoppo e una roccia d’inciampo; ma chi crede in lui non sarà svergognato.
according as it hath been written, 'Lo, I place in Sion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence; and every one who is believing thereon shall not be ashamed.'
