Esdra 5
1 Or i profeti Aggeo e Zaccaria, figliuolo d’Iddo, profetarono nel nome dell’Iddio d’Israele ai Giudei ch’erano in Giuda ed a Gerusalemme.
Then Haggai the prophet and Zechariah son of Iddo the prophet prophesied in the name of the God of Israel to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem.
2 Allora Zorobabel, figliuolo di Scealtiel, e Jeshua, figliuolo di Jotsadak, si levarono e ricominciarono a edificare la casa di Dio a Gerusalemme; e con essi erano i profeti di Dio, che li secondavano.
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak rose up and began to build the house of God in Jerusalem with the prophets who supported them.
3 In quel medesimo tempo giunsero da loro Tattenai, governatore d’oltre il fiume, Scethar-Boznai e i loro colleghi, e parlaron loro così: “Chi v’ha dato ordine di edificare questa casa e di rialzare queste mura?”
Then Tattenai the governor of the Province Beyond the River, Shethar-Bozenai, and his associates came and said to them, “Who gave you a decree to build this house and complete these walls?”
4 Poi aggiunsero: “Quali sono i nomi degli uomini che costruiscono quest’edifizio?”
They also said, “What are the names of the men building this building?”
5 Ma sugli anziani dei Giudei vegliava l’occhio del loro Dio e quelli non li fecero cessare i lavori, finché la cosa non fosse stata sottoposta a Dario, e da lui fosse giunta una risposta in proposito.
But God's eye was on the Jewish elders and their enemies did not stop them. They were waiting for a letter to be sent to the king and for a decree to be returned to them concerning this.
6 Copia della lettera mandata al re Dario da Tattenai, governatore d’oltre il fiume, da Scethar-Boznai, e dai suoi colleghi, gli Afarsakiti, ch’erano oltre il fiume.
This is a copy of the letter of Tattenai, governor of the Province Beyond the River, and Shethar-Bozenai and his accociates in the Province Beyond the River, which they sent to Darius the king.
7 Gl’inviarono un rapporto così concepito: “Al re Dario, perfetta salute!
They sent a report, writing this to King Darius, “May all peace be yours.
8 Sappia il re che noi siamo andati nella provincia di Giuda, alla casa del gran Dio. Essa si costruisce con blocchi di pietra, e nelle pareti s’interpongono de’ legnami; l’opera vien fatta con cura e progredisce nelle loro mani.
Let the king know that we went to Judah to the house of the great God. It is being built with large stones and timbers set in the walls. This work is being done thoroughly and is going forward well in their hands.
9 Noi abbiamo interrogato quegli anziani, e abbiam parlato loro così: Chi v’ha dato ordine di edificare questa casa e di rialzare queste mura?
We asked the elders, 'Who gave you a decree to build this house and these walls?'
10 Abbiamo anche domandato loro i loro nomi per notificarteli, mettendo in iscritto i nomi degli uomini che stanno loro a capo.
We also asked them their names so you might know the name of each man who led them.
11 E questa è la risposta che ci hanno data: Noi siamo i servi dell’Iddio del cielo e della terra, e riedifichiamo la casa ch’era stata edificata già molti anni fa: un gran re d’Israele l’aveva edificata e compiuta.
They replied and said, 'We are servants of the one who is the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding this house that had been built many years ago when the great king of Israel built it and completed it.
12 Ma avendo i nostri padri provocato ad ira l’Iddio del cielo, Iddio li diede in mano di Nebucadnetsar, re di Babilonia, il Caldeo, il quale distrusse questa casa, e menò il popolo in cattività a Babilonia.
However, when our ancestors enraged the God of heaven, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house and took the people into exile in Babylon.
13 Ma il primo anno di Ciro, re di Babilonia, il re Ciro die’ ordine che questa casa di Dio fosse riedificata.
Nevertheless, in the first year when Cyrus was king of Babylon, Cyrus issued a decree to rebuild the house of God.
14 E il re Ciro trasse pure dal tempio di Babilonia gli utensili d’oro e d’argento della casa di Dio, che Nebucadnetsar avea portati via dal tempio di Gerusalemme e trasportati nel tempio di Babilonia; li fece consegnare a uno chiamato Sceshbatsar, ch’egli aveva fatto governatore, e gli disse:
King Cyrus also returned the gold and silver objects belonging to the house of God that Nebuchadnezzar had brought from the temple in Jerusalem to the temple in Babylon. He restored them to Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor.
15 Prendi questi utensili, va’ a riporli nel tempio di Gerusalemme, e la casa di Dio sia riedificata dov’era.
He said to him, “Take these objects. Go and put them in the temple in Jerusalem. Let the house of God be rebuilt there.”
16 Allora lo stesso Sceshbatsar venne e gettò le fondamenta della casa di Dio a Gerusalemme; da quel tempo fino ad ora essa è in costruzione, ma non è ancora finita.
Then this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundation for the house of God in Jerusalem; and it is being constructed, but is not yet complete.'
17 Or dunque, se così piaccia al re, si faccian delle ricerche nella casa dei tesori del re a Babilonia, per accertare se vi sia stato un ordine dato dal re Ciro per la costruzione di questa casa a Gerusalemme; e ci trasmetta il re il suo beneplacito a questo riguardo”.
Now if it pleases the king, may it be investigated in the house of archives in Babylon if a judgment from King Cyrus exists there to build this house of God in Jerusalem. Then let the king send his decision to us.
