Ecclesiaste 1
1 Parole dell’Ecclesiaste, figliuolo di Davide, re di Gerusalemme.
The words of Ecclesiastes, the son of David, king of Jerusalem.
2 Vanità delle vanità, dice l’Ecclesiaste;
Vanity of vanities, said Ecclesiastes vanity of vanities, and all is vanity.
3 vanità delle vanità; tutto è vanità. Che profitto ha l’uomo di tutta la fatica che dura sotto il sole?
What hath a man more of all his labour, that he taketh under the sun?
4 Una generazione se ne va, un’altra viene, e la terra sussiste in perpetuo.
One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth standeth for ever.
5 Anche il sole si leva, poi tramonta, e s’affretta verso il luogo donde si leva di nuovo.
The sun riseth, and goeth down, and returneth to his place: and there rising again,
6 Il vento soffia verso il mezzogiorno, poi gira verso settentrione; va girando, girando continuamente, per ricominciare gli stessi giri.
Maketh his round by the south, and turneth again to the north: the spirit goeth forward surveying all places round about, and returneth to his circuits.
7 Tutti i fiumi corrono al mare, eppure il mare non s’empie; al luogo dove i fiumi si dirigono, tornano a dirigersi sempre.
All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea doth not overflow: unto the place from whence the rivers come, they return, to flow again.
8 Ogni cosa è in travaglio, più di quel che l’uomo possa dire; l’occhio non si sazia mai di vedere, e l’orecchio non è mai stanco d’udire.
All things are hard: man cannot explain them by word. The eye is not filled with seeing, neither is the ear filled with hearing.
9 Quello ch’è stato è quel che sarà; quel che s’è fatto è quel che si farà; non v’è nulla di nuovo sotto il sole.
What is it that hath been? the same thing that shall be. What is it that hath been done? the same that shall be done.
10 V’ha egli qualcosa della quale si dica: “Guarda questo è nuovo?” Quella cosa esisteva già nei secoli che ci hanno preceduto.
Nothing under the sun is new, neither is any man able to say: Behold this is new: for it hath already gone before in the ages that were before us.
11 Non rimane memoria delle cose d’altri tempi; e di quel che succederà in seguito non rimarrà memoria fra quelli che verranno più tardi.
There is no remembrance of former things: nor indeed of those things which hereafter are to come, shall there be any remembrance with them that shall be in the latter end.
12 Io, l’Ecclesiaste, sono stato re d’Israele a Gerusalemme,
I Ecclesiastes was king over Israel in Jerusalem,
13 ed ho applicato il cuore a cercare e ad investigare con sapienza tutto ciò che si fa sotto il cielo: occupazione penosa, che Dio ha data ai figliuoli degli uomini perché vi si affatichino.
And I proposed in my mind to seek and search out wisely concerning all things that are done under the sun. This painful occupation hath God given to the children of men, to be exercised therein.
14 Io ho veduto tutto ciò che si fa sotto il sole: ed ecco tutto è vanità e un correr dietro al vento.
I have seen all things that are done under the sun, and behold all is vanity, and vexation of spirit.
15 Ciò che è storto non può essere raddrizzato, ciò che manca non può esser contato.
The perverse are hard to be corrected, and the number of fools is infinite.
16 Io ho detto, parlando in cuor mio: “Ecco io ho acquistato maggior sapienza di tutti quelli che hanno regnato prima di me in Gerusalemme”; sì, il mio cuore ha posseduto molta sapienza e molta scienza.
I have spoken in my heart, saying: Behold I am become great, and have gone beyond all in wisdom, that were before me in Jerusalem: and my mind hath contemplated many things wisely, and I have learned.
17 Ed ho applicato il cuore a conoscer la sapienza, e a conoscere la follia e la stoltezza, ed ho riconosciuto che anche questo è un correr dietro al vento.
And I have given my heart to know prudence, and learning, and errors, and folly: and I have perceived that in these also there was labour, and vexation of spirit,
18 Poiché dov’è molta sapienza v’è molto affanno, e chi accresce la sua scienza accresce il suo dolore.
Because In much wisdom there is much indignation: and he that addeth knowledge, addeth also labour.
