1 Or in que’ giorni, moltiplicandosi il numero dei discepoli, sorse un mormorio degli Ellenisti contro gli Ebrei, perché le loro vedove erano trascurate nell’assistenza quotidiana.
Now in these days while the number of the disciples was multiplying, the Grecian Jews began to murmur against the Hebrews, because their widows were habitually overlooked in the distribution of alms.
2 E i dodici, raunata la moltitudine dei discepoli, dissero: Non è convenevole che noi lasciamo la parola di Dio per servire alle mense.
Then the Twelve called the general body of the disciples together, and said to them. "It is not fitting for us to leave off preaching the Word of God, and minister at tables.
3 Perciò, fratelli, cercate di trovar fra voi sette uomini, de’ quali si abbia buona testimonianza, pieni di Spirito e di sapienza, e che noi incaricheremo di quest’opera.
"So, brothers, find from among your own number seven men of good reputation who are full of the Spirit and of wisdom, and we will appoint them over this business.
4 Ma quant’è a noi, continueremo a dedicarci alla preghiera e al ministerio della Parola.
"But we will give ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the Word."
5 E questo ragionamento piacque a tutta la moltitudine; ed elessero Stefano, uomo pieno di fede e di Spirito Santo, Filippo, Procoro, Nicanore, Timone, Parmena e Nicola, proselito di Antiochia;
This plan commended itself to the whole body, and they selected Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte of Antioch.
6 e li presentarono agli apostoli, i quali, dopo aver pregato, imposero loro le mani.
These men they presented to the apostles who, when they had prayed, laid their hands upon them.
7 E la parola di Dio si diffondeva, e il numero dei discepoli si moltiplicava grandemente in Gerusalemme; e anche una gran quantità di sacerdoti ubbidiva alla fede.
And the word of the Lord continued to spread; and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem was increasing exceedingly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.
8 Or Stefano, pieno di grazia e di potenza, faceva gran prodigi e segni fra il popolo.
Meanwhile Stephen, full of grace and power, wrought great wonders and signs among the people.
9 Ma alcuni della sinagoga detta dei Liberti, e de’ Cirenei, e degli Alessandrini, e di quei di Cilicia e d’Asia, si levarono a disputare con Stefano;
But certain men from the so-called "Synagogue of the Freedmen" and certain Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, Cilicians, and men from Roman Asia, started to dispute with Stephen,
10 e non potevano resistere alla sapienza e allo Spirito con cui egli parlava.
but were unable to withstand the wisdom and spirit with which he used to speak.
11 Allora subornarono degli uomini che dissero: Noi l’abbiamo udito dir parole di bestemmia contro Mosè e contro Dio.
Then they instigated some to say, "We have heard him speaking blasphemy against Moses and against God;" and in this way they excited the people.
12 E commossero il popolo e gli anziani e gli scribi; e venutigli addosso, lo afferrarono e lo menarono al Sinedrio;
The elders and the scribes rushed upon him, and seized him, and brought him into the Sanhedrin.
13 e presentarono dei falsi testimoni, che dicevano: Quest’uomo non cessa di proferir parole contro il luogo santo e contro la legge.
They also set up false witnesses who testified. "This fellow is continually talking against the Holy Place and against the law.
14 Infatti gli abbiamo udito dire che quel Nazareno, Gesù, distruggerà questo luogo e muterà gli usi che Mosè ci ha tramandati.
"For we have heard him say that Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place, and will change the customs which were handed down to us by Moses."
15 E tutti coloro che sedevano nel Sinedrio, avendo fissati in lui gli occhi, videro la sua faccia simile alla faccia d’un angelo.
Then all who were sitting in the council at once fixed their eyes upon him, and saw his face like the face of an angel.
