1 Or Salomone s’imparentò con Faraone, re di Egitto. Sposò la figliuola di Faraone, e la menò nella città di Davide, finché avesse finito di edificare la sua casa, la casa dell’Eterno e le mura di cinta di Gerusalemme.
And Solomon intermarried with Pharaoh the king of Egypt, and took the daughter of Pharaoh, and brought her into the city of David, until he had finished building his own house, and the house of the Lord, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.
2 Intanto il popolo non offriva sacrifizi che sugli alti luoghi, perché fino a que’ giorni non era stata edificata casa al nome dell’Eterno.
But the people sacrificed still on the high-places; because there was no house built unto the name of the Lord, until those days.
3 E Salomone amava l’Eterno e seguiva i precetti di Davide suo padre; soltanto offriva sacrifizi e profumi sugli alti luoghi.
And Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father: only that he sacrificed and burnt incense on the high-places.
4 Il re si recò a Gabaon per offrirvi sacrifizi, perché quello era il principale fra gli alti luoghi; e su quell’altare Salomone offerse mille olocausti.
And the king went to Gib'on to sacrifice there; for that was the great high-place: one thousand burnt-offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.
5 A Gabaon, l’Eterno apparve di notte, in sogno, a Salomone. E Dio gli disse: “Chiedi quello che vuoi ch’io ti dia”.
In Gib'on the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream of the night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.
6 Salomone rispose: “Tu hai trattato con gran benevolenza il tuo servo Davide, mio padre, perch’egli camminava dinanzi a te con fedeltà, con giustizia, con rettitudine di cuore a tuo riguardo; tu gli hai conservata questa gran benevolenza, e gli hai dato un figliuolo che siede sul trono di lui, come oggi avviene.
And Solomon said, Thou hast shown unto thy servant David my father great kindness, just as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, and thou hast given him a son who sitteth on his throne, as it is this day.
7 Ora, o Eterno, o mio Dio, tu hai fatto regnar me, tuo servo, in luogo di Davide mio padre, e io non sono che un giovanetto, e non so come condurmi;
And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king in the place of David my father: and I am but a young lad; I know not how to go out or come in.
8 e il tuo servo è in mezzo al popolo che tu hai scelto, popolo numeroso, che non può esser contato né calcolato, tanto è grande.
And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot he numbered nor counted for multitude.
9 Da’ dunque al tuo servo un cuore intelligente ond’egli possa amministrar la giustizia per il tuo popolo e discernere il bene dal male; poiché chi mai potrebbe amministrar la giustizia per questo tuo popolo che è così numeroso?”
Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, to discern between good and bad; for who would [otherwise] be able to judge this thy great people?
10 Piacque al Signore che Salomone gli avesse fatta una tale richiesta.
And the speech was pleasing in the eyes of the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.
11 E Dio gli disse: “Giacché tu hai domandato questo, e non hai chiesto per te lunga vita, né ricchezze, né la morte de’ tuoi nemici, ma hai chiesto intelligenza per poter discernere ciò ch’è giusto,
And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; and hast not asked for thyself riches, nor hast asked the life of thy enemies; but hast asked for thyself discernment to understand [how to give] judgment:
12 ecco, io faccio secondo la tua parola; e ti do un cuor savio e intelligente, in guisa che nessuno è stato simile a te per lo innanzi, e nessuno sorgerà simile a te in appresso.
Behold, I have done according to thy word; lo, I have given thee a wise and a discerning heart; so that like unto thee there was none before thee, nor after thee shall any one arise like unto thee.
13 E oltre a questo io ti do quello che non hai domandato: ricchezze e gloria; talmente, che non vi sarà durante tutta la tua vita alcuno fra i re che possa esserti paragonato.
And also what thou hast not asked have I given thee, both riches and honor: so that like unto thee there shall not have been any one among the kings all thy days.
14 E se cammini nelle mie vie osservando le mie leggi e i miei comandamenti, come fece Davide tuo padre, io prolungherò i tuoi giorni”.
And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then will I lengthen thy days.
15 Salomone si svegliò, ed ecco era un sogno; tornò a Gerusalemme, si presentò davanti all’arca del patto del Signore, e offerse olocausti, sacrifizi di azioni di grazie e fece un convito a tutti i suoi servi.
And Solomon awoke, and, behold, it was a dream; and he went to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered up burnt-offerings, and prepared peace-offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.
16 Allora due meretrici vennero a presentarsi davanti al re.
Then came there two women, that were harlots, unto the king, and placed themselves before him.
17 Una delle due disse: “Permetti, Signor mio! Io e questa donna abitavamo nella medesima casa, e io partorii nella camera dov’ella pure stava.
And the one woman said, Pardon, my Lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.
18 E il terzo giorno dopo che ebbi partorito io, questa donna partorì anch’ella; noi stavamo insieme, e non v’era da noi alcun estraneo; non c’eravamo che noi due in casa.
And it came to pass on the third day after I was delivered, that also this woman was delivered: and we were together, there was no stranger with us in the house, only we two were in the house.
19 Ora, la notte passata, il bimbo di questa donna morì, perch’ella gli s’era coricata addosso.
And this woman's son died in the night; because she had overlaid him.
20 Ed essa, alzatasi nel cuor della notte, prese il mio figliuolo d’accanto a me, mentre la tua serva dormiva, e lo pose a giacere sul suo seno, e sul mio seno pose il suo figliuolo morto.
And she arose in the midst of the night, and took my son from beside me, while thy hand-maid slept, and laid him in her bosom, and her dead son she laid in my bosom.
21 E quando m’alzai la mattina per far poppare il mio figlio, ecco ch’era morto; ma, mirandolo meglio a giorno chiaro, m’accorsi che non era il mio figlio ch’io avea partorito”.
And when I rose in the morning to give my son suck, behold, he was dead; but when I looked at him carefully in the morning, behold, it was not my son, whom I had born.
22 L’altra donna disse: “No, il vivo è il figliuolo mio, e il morto è il tuo”. Ma la prima replicò: “No, invece, il morto è il figliuolo tuo, e il vivo è il mio”. Così altercavano in presenza del re.
And the other woman said, It is not so; my son is the living one, and thy son is the dead; and this one said, It is not so; thy son is the dead, and my son is the living: thus they spoke before the king.
23 Allora il re disse: “Una dice: Questo ch’è vivo è il figliuolo mio, e quello ch’è morto è il tuo; e l’altra dice: No, invece, il morto e il figliuolo tuo, e il vivo e il mio”.
Then said the king, This one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is dead: and the other saith, It is not so; thy son is the dead, and my son is the living.
24 Il re soggiunse: “Portatemi una spada!” E portarono una spada davanti al re.
And the king said, Fetch me a sword: and they brought the sword before the king.
25 E il re disse: “Dividete il bambino vivo in due parti, e datene la metà all’una, e la metà all’altra”.
And the king said, Hew the living child in two, and give the one half to one, and the other half to the other.
26 Allora la donna di cui era il bambino vivo, sentendosi commuover le viscere per amore del suo figliuolo, disse al re: “Deh! Signor mio, date a lei il bambino vivo, e non l’uccidete, no!” Ma l’altra diceva: “Non sia né mio né tuo; si divida!”
Then spoke the woman whose son was the living unto the king, for her love had become enkindled for her son, and she said, O pardon, my Lord, give her the living child, and only do not slay it; but the other said, Neither mine nor thine shall it be, hew it asunder.
27 Allora il re, rispondendo, disse: “Date a quella il bambino vivo, e non l’uccidete; la madre del bimbo è lei!”
The king then answered and said, Give her the living child, and do not slay it: she is its mother.
28 E tutto Israele udì parlare del giudizio che il re avea pronunziato, e temettero il re perché vedevano che la sapienza di Dio era in lui per amministrare la giustizia.
And when all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had given, they feared the king; for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to exercise justice.
