Proverbi 20
1 Il vino [è] schernitore, e la cervogia [è] tumultuante; E chiunque ne è vago non è savio.
Wine [is] a scorner — strong drink [is] noisy, And any going astray in it is not wise.
2 Il terrore del re [è] come il ruggito del leoncello; Chi lo provoca ad indegnazione pecca [contro a] sè stesso.
The fear of a king [is] a growl as of a young lion, He who is causing him to be wroth is wronging his soul.
3 [Egli è] gloria all'uomo di rimanersi di contesa; Ma chiunque è stolto si fa schernire.
An honour to a man is cessation from strife, And every fool intermeddleth.
4 Il pigro non ara per cagion del freddo; [E poi] nella ricolta va accattando, e [non trova] nulla.
Because of winter the slothful plougheth not, He asketh in harvest, and there is nothing.
5 Il consiglio nel cuor dell'uomo [è] un'acqua profonda; E l'uomo intendente l'attignerà.
Counsel in the heart of a man [is] deep water, And a man of understanding draweth it up.
6 Il più degli uomini predicano ciascuno la sua benignità; Ma chi troverà un uomo verace?
A multitude of men proclaim each his kindness, And a man of stedfastness who doth find?
7 I figliuoli del giusto, che cammina nella sua integrità, [Saranno] beati dopo di lui.
The righteous is walking habitually in his integrity, O the happiness of his sons after him!
8 Il re, sedendo sopra il trono del giudicio, Dissipa ogni male con gli occhi suoi.
A king sitting on a throne of judgment, Is scattering with his eyes all evil,
9 Chi può dire: Io ho purgato il mio cuore, Io son netto del mio peccato?
Who saith, 'I have purified my heart, I have been cleansed from my sin?'
10 Doppio peso, e doppio staio, [Sono] amendue cosa abbominevole al Signore.
A stone and a stone, an ephah and an ephah, Even both of them [are] an abomination to Jehovah.
11 Fin da fanciullo [l'uomo] è riconosciuto da' suoi atti, Se egli [sarà] puro, e se le sue opere [saranno] diritte.
Even by his actions a youth maketh himself known, Whether his work be pure or upright.
12 Il Signore ha fatte amendue queste cose: E l'orecchio che ode, e l'occhio che vede.
A hearing ear, and a seeing eye, Jehovah hath made even both of them.
13 Non amare il sonno, che tu non impoverisca; Tieni gli occhi aperti, [e] sarai saziato di pane.
Love not sleep, lest thou become poor, Open thine eyes — be satisfied [with] bread.
14 Chi compera dice: [Egli è] cattivo, [egli è] cattivo; Ma quando se n'è andato, allora si vanta.
'Bad, bad,' saith the buyer, And going his way then he boasteth himself.
15 Vi è dell'oro, e delle perle assai; Ma le labbra di scienza [sono] un vaso prezioso.
Substance, gold, and a multitude of rubies, Yea, a precious vessel, [are] lips of knowledge.
16 Prendi pure il vestimento di chi ha fatta sicurtà per lo strano; Prendi pegno da lui per gli stranieri.
Take his garment when a stranger hath been surety, And for strangers pledge it.
17 Il pane acquistato con frode è soave all'uomo; Ma poi la sua bocca si trova piena di ghiaia.
Sweet to a man [is] the bread of falsehood, And afterwards is his mouth filled [with] gravel.
18 I disegni son renduti stabili con consiglio; Fa' dunque la guerra con prudenti deliberazioni.
Purposes by counsel thou dost establish, And with plans make thou war.
19 Chi va sparlando palesa il segreto: Non rimescolarti adunque con chi è allettante di labbra.
A revealer of secret counsels is the busybody, And for a deceiver [with] his lips make not thyself surety.
20 La lampana di chi maledice suo padre, o sua madre, Sarà spenta nelle più oscure tenebre.
Whoso is vilifying his father and his mother, Extinguished is his lamp in blackness of darkness.
21 L'eredità acquistata di subito da principio Non sarà benedetta alla fine.
An inheritance gotten wrongly at first, Even its latter end is not blessed.
22 Non dire: Io renderò il male; Aspetta il Signore, ed egli ti salverà.
Do not say, 'I recompense evil,' Wait for Jehovah, and He delivereth thee.
23 Doppio peso [è] cosa abbominevole al Signore; E le bilance fallaci non [sono] buone.
An abomination to Jehovah [are] a stone and a stone, And balances of deceit [are] not good.
24 I passi dell'uomo [sono] dal Signore; E come intenderà l'uomo la sua via?
From Jehovah [are] the steps of a man, And man — how understandeth he his way?
25 Dire inconsideratamente: [Questa è] cosa sacra; E riflettere dopo aver fatti i voti, è un laccio all'uomo.
A snare to a man [is] he hath swallowed a holy thing, And after vows to make inquiry.
26 Il re savio dissipa gli empi, E rimena la ruota sopra loro.
A wise king is scattering the wicked, And turneth back on them the wheel.
27 L'anima dell'uomo [è] una lampana del Signore, Che investiga tutti i segreti nascondimenti del ventre.
The breath of man [is] a lamp of Jehovah, Searching all the inner parts of the heart.
28 Benignità e verità guardano il re; Ed egli ferma il suo trono per benignità.
Kindness and truth keep a king, And he hath supported by kindness his throne.
29 La forza de' giovani [è] la lor gloria; E l'onor de' vecchi [è] la canutezza.
The beauty of young men is their strength, And the honour of old men is grey hairs.
30 I lividori delle battiture, e le percosse che penetrano addentro nel ventre [Sono] una lisciatura nel malvagio.
The bandages of a wound thou removest with the evil, Also the plagues of the inner parts of the heart!
