Proverbi 14
1 Le donne savie edificano le lor case; Ma la stolta la sovverte con le sue mani.
Every wise woman builds her house, but the stupid woman tears it down with her own hands.
2 Chi cammina nella sua dirittura riverisce il Signore; Ma chi è stravolto nelle sue vie lo sprezza.
Those who live right respect the Lord, but those who live dishonestly despise him.
3 Nella bocca dello stolto [è] la bacchetta dell'alterezza; Ma le labbra de' savi li guardano.
What stupid people say punishes their pride, but what wise people say will protect them.
4 Dove non [son] buoi, il granaio [è] vuoto; Ma l'abbondanza della ricolta [è] per la forza del bue.
Without oxen, the manger is empty, but a good harvest comes through the ox's strength.
5 Il testimonio verace non mente; Ma il falso testimonio sbocca bugie.
A trustworthy witness doesn't lie, but a false witness is deceptive.
6 Lo schernitore cerca la sapienza, e non [la trova] punto; Ma la scienza agevolmente [si acquista] dall'[uomo] intendente.
It's pointless for a scoffer to look for wisdom, but knowledge comes easily to someone who understands.
7 Vattene via d'innanzi all'uomo stolto, E [d'innanzi a colui, nel quale] non avrai conosciute labbra di scienza.
Stay away from stupid people—you won't learn anything from them.
8 La sapienza dell'uomo [è] di considerar la sua via; Ma la follia degli stolti [è] inganno.
Sensible people use their wisdom to decide where they're going, but the foolishness of stupid people is treacherous.
9 Gli stolti si fanno beffe del [commetter] misfatto; Ma fra gli [uomini] diritti [è] la benevolenza.
Stupid people laugh at sin, but good people want forgiveness.
10 Il cuore di ciascuno conosce l'amaritudine dell'anima sua; Ed altresì alcuno strano non è mescolato nella sua allegrezza.
The individual's mind alone knows its sadnesses, and no one else can share its happiness.
11 La casa degli empi sarà distrutta; Ma il tabernacolo degli [uomini] diritti fiorirà.
The house of wicked people will be destroyed, but the tent of good people will prosper.
12 Vi è tal via che pare diritta all'uomo, Il fine della quale [son] le vie della morte.
There's a way that seems to be right, but in the end it's the way of death.
13 Come di [troppo] ridere duole il cuore, Così la fine dell'allegrezza [è] dolore.
Even when you're laughing you can be feeling sad—joy can end in grief.
14 Chi è sviato di cuore sarà saziato delle sue vie; E più ch'esso [lo sarà] l'uomo da bene delle sue.
Disloyal people are repaid for what they do, and good people are rewarded.
15 Lo scempio crede ogni cosa; Ma l'avveduto considera i suoi passi.
Stupid people believe whatever they're told, but sensible people think about what they're doing.
16 Il savio teme, e si ritrae dal male; Ma lo stolto trascorre, e si tien sicuro.
Wise people are careful and avoid evil, but stupid people are confidently reckless.
17 Chi è pronto all'ira commette follia; E l'uomo malizioso è odiato.
Quick-tempered people act foolishly, while people who make evil plans are hated.
18 Gli scempi erederanno la stoltizia; Ma i prudenti coroneranno [il lor capo] di scienza.
The inheritance of stupid people is stupidity, but sensible people are rewarded with knowledge.
19 I malvagi saranno abbassati davanti a' buoni; E gli empi [saranno] alle porte del giusto.
Evil people bow down before good people, and the wicked bow down at the doors of those who do right.
20 Il povero è odiato eziandio dal suo prossimo; Ma molti son gli amici del ricco.
The poor are hated even by their neighbors, while the rich have many friends.
21 Chi sprezza il suo prossimo pecca; Ma beato chi ha pietà de' poveri.
People who look down on their neighbors are sinners, but those who are kind to the poor are blessed.
22 Quelli che macchinano del male non sono eglino traviati? Ma benignità e verità [sarà usata inverso] coloro che pensano del bene.
Aren't people who plan to do evil wrong? But those who plan to do good have trustworthy love and faithfulness.
23 In ogni fatica vi è del profitto; Ma il parlar delle labbra [torna] solo in inopia.
There's profit in hard work, but chatting just leads to poverty.
24 Le ricchezze de' savi [sono] la lor corona; [Ma] la follia degli stolti [è sempre] follia.
The wise are rewarded with wealth, but stupid people are rewarded with stupidity.
25 Il testimonio verace libera le anime; Ma il falso sbocca bugie.
A truthful witness saves lives, but a false witness is treacherous.
26 Nel timor del Signore vi è confidanza fortissima; E vi sarà un ricetto per li figliuoli di colui [che teme Iddio].
People who honor the Lord are completely safe; he will protect their children.
27 Il timor del Signore [è] una fonte di vita, Per ritrarsi da' lacci della morte.
Respecting the Lord is like a fountain of life, so you can avoid the snares of death.
28 La magnificenza del re [è] nella moltitudine del popolo; Ma la ruina del principe [è] nel mancamento della gente.
The glory of a king is the number of his subjects, for a ruler is nothing without them.
29 Chi è lento all'ira [è] di gran prudenza; Ma chi è pronto al cruccio eccita la follia.
If you're slow to get angry, you're very wise; but if you have a short fuse you glorify stupidity.
30 Il cuor sano [è] la vita delle carni; Ma l'invidia [è] il tarlo delle ossa.
A peaceful mind makes your body healthy, but jealousy makes your bones rot.
31 Chi oppressa il povero fa onta a colui che l'ha fatto; Ma chi ha pietà del bisognoso l'onora.
Anyone who oppresses the poor insults their Maker, but anyone who is kind to the needy honors him.
32 L'empio sarà traboccato per la sua malvagità; Ma il giusto spera [eziandio] nella sua morte.
Wicked people are brought down by their own evil actions, but those who live right are confident even in death.
33 La sapienza riposa nel cuore dell'[uomo] intendente, Ed è riconosciuta in mezzo degli stolti.
Wisdom is at home in a mind that understands, but it's not found among stupid people.
34 La giustizia innalza la nazione; Ma il peccato [è] il vituperio de' popoli.
Doing right makes a nation successful, but sin is a disgrace to any people.
35 Il favor del re [è] verso il servitore intendente; Ma la sua indegnazione [è] contro a quello che reca vituperio.
A servant who acts wisely is appreciated by the king, but he gets angry with a servant who acts disgracefully.
