Lamentazioni 4
1 COME è oscurato l'oro, [Ed] ha mutato [colore] il buon oro fino, [E] sono le pietre del santuario state sparse In capo d'ogni strada!
The gold has become tarnished; how the purest gold has changed! The holy stones are scattered at the corner of every street.
2 Come i nobili figliuoli di Sion, Pregiati al pari dell'ottimo oro, Sono stati reputati quali vaselli di terra, Lavoro di man di vasellaio!
The precious sons of Zion were worth their weight in pure gold, but now they are worth no more than clay jars, the work of the potter's hands!
3 [Vi sono] anche de' gran pesci marini che porgon le poppe, [E] lattano i lor figli; [Ma] la figliuola del mio popolo è divenuta crudele, Come gli struzzi nel deserto.
Even the jackals offer the breast to nurse their cubs, but the daughter of my people has become cruel, like the ostriches in the desert.
4 La lingua del bambino di poppa Si è attaccata al suo palato, per la sete; I fanciulli hanno chiesto del pane, E non [vi era] alcuno che [ne] distribuisse loro.
The tongue of the nursing baby sticks to the roof of his mouth by thirst; the children ask for food, but there is none for them.
5 Quelli che mangiavano cibi delicati Son periti per le strade; Quelli ch'erano stati allevati sopra lo scarlatto Hanno abbracciato il letame.
Those who used to feast on the finest food now starve in the streets. Those who were brought up wearing scarlet clothing now lie on piles of ashes.
6 E la pena dell'iniquità della figliuola del mio popolo è stata maggiore Che la pena del peccato di Sodoma, Che fu sovvertita come in un momento, Senza che la mano d'alcuno si levasse contro di lei.
The punishment of the daughter of my people is greater than that of Sodom, which was overthrown in a moment and no hands were wrung for her.
7 I principi di essa erano più puri che neve, Più candidi che latte, Vermigli del corpo più che gemme, Puliti come zaffiri.
Her leaders were purer than snow, whiter than milk; their bodies were more ruddy than coral, their form was like sapphire.
8 Il loro sguardo è divenuto fosco più che la nerezza stessa; Non si son riconosciuti per le piazze; La lor pelle si è attaccata alle loro ossa; È seccata, è divenuta come legno.
Their appearance now is darker than soot; they are not recognized in the streets. Their skin has shriveled on their bones; it has become as dry as wood.
9 Più felici sono stati gli uccisi con la spada, Che quelli che son morti di fame; Perciocchè, essendo traffitti, [il sangue loro] è colato, E non hanno [più avuto bisogno] della rendita del campo.
Those who have been killed by the sword were happier than those killed by hunger, who wasted away, pierced by the lack of any harvest from the field.
10 Donne pietose, colle proprie mani, Hanno cotti i loro figliuoli: Quelli sono loro stati per cibo, Nella ruina della figliuola del mio popolo.
The hands of compassionate women have boiled their own children; they became their food during the time when the daughter of my people was being destroyed.
11 Il Signore ha adempiuta la sua ira, Ha sparso l'ardor del suo cruccio, Ed ha acceso un fuoco in Sion, Che ha consumati i fondamenti di essa.
Yahweh showed all his wrath; he poured out his fierce anger. He kindled a fire in Zion that consumed her foundations.
12 I re della terra, e tutti gli abitatori del mondo, Non avrebbero mai creduto Ch'entrasse nemico, nè avversario Dentro alle porte di Gerusalemme.
The kings of the earth did not believe, nor did any of the inhabitants of the world believe, that enemies or opponents could enter the gates of Jerusalem.
13 [Quest'è avvenuto] per i peccati de' profeti di essa, [Per] l'iniquità de' suoi sacerdoti, Che spandevano nel mezzo di essa Il sangue de' giusti.
This happened because of the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests who have shed the blood of the righteous in her midst.
14 I ciechi sono andati vagando per le strade, Si son contaminati di sangue, L'han toccato co' lor vestimenti, Senza poterlo [schivare].
They wandered, blind, through the streets. They were so defiled by that blood that no one was allowed to touch their clothes.
15 Ei si gridava loro: Traetevi addietro; [ciò è] immondo; Traetevi addietro, nol toccate; E pur se ne volavano via, e andavano errando. Ei si è detto fra le genti: Essi non potran più dimorare [nel lor paese].
“Away! Unclean!” people cried at them. “Away! Away! Do not touch!” So they wandered about; people said among the nations, “They can stay here no longer.”
16 La faccia del Signore li ha dispersi; Egli non continuerà più a riguardarli; Non hanno avuto alcun rispetto a' sacerdoti, Nè pietà de' vecchi.
Yahweh himself scattered them; he does not watch over them anymore. They do not honor the priests, and they did not show any favor to the elders.
17 Mentre siamo durati, i nostri occhi si son consumati Dietro al nostro soccorso, [che non è stato altro che] vanità; Noi abbiam riguardato nella nostra vedetta Ad una gente [che] non potea salvare.
Our eyes failed, looking in vain for help; from our watchtowers we watched for a nation that could not rescue us.
18 Ci hanno cacciati, [seguendo] i nostri passi, Sì che non siam potuti andar per le nostre campagne; Il nostro fine si è avvicinato, i nostri dì son compiuti; Perciocchè il nostro fine è venuto.
They followed our steps, we could not walk in our streets. Our end was near and our days were numbered, our end had come.
19 Quelli che ci hanno perseguiti Sono stati più leggieri che le aquile del cielo; Ci son corsi dietro in su i monti, Ci han posti agguati nel deserto.
Our pursuers were swifter than the eagles in the sky. They chased us to the mountains and lay in wait for us in the wilderness.
20 Il respiro delle nostre nari, L'Unto del Signore, di cui noi dicevamo: Noi viveremo alla sua ombra fra le genti, È stato preso nelle lor trappole.
The breath in our nostrils—Yahweh's anointed one—he was the one who was captured in their pits; of whom it was said, “Under his shadow we will live among the nations.”
21 Gioisci pure, e rallegrati, figliuola di Edom; [Tu] che abiti nel paese di Us, Sopra te ancora passerà la coppa; Tu [ne] sarai inebbriata, e ti scoprirai.
Rejoice and be glad, daughter of Edom, you who live in the land of Uz. But to you also the cup will be passed; you will be drunk and strip yourself naked.
22 La pena della tua iniquità è finita, figliuola di Sion; Egli non ti farà più menare in cattività; Egli farà punizione della tua iniquità, figliuola di Edom; Egli scoprirà i tuoi peccati.
Daughter of Zion, your punishment will come to an end; he will not extend your exile. But daughter of Edom, he will punish; he will uncover your sins.
