Giudici 8

1 E GLI uomini di Efraim gli dissero: Che cosa è questo che tu ci hai fatto, di non averci chiamati, quando tu sei andato a combattere contro a Madian? E contesero aspramente con lui.

And the men of Ephraim say to him, “What [is] this thing you have done to us—not to call for us when you went to fight with Midian?” And they strive with him severely;

2 Ma egli disse loro: Che ho io ora fatto al par di voi? il raspollar d'Efraim non vale egli meglio che la vendemmia d'Abiezer?

and he says to them, “What have I now done like you? Are the gleanings of Ephraim not better than the harvest of Abi-Ezer?

3 Iddio vi ha dati i Capi de' Madianiti, Oreb, e Zeeb, nelle mani; e che ho io potuto fare al par di voi? Allora, dopo ch'ebbe loro così parlato, il lor cruccio contro a lui si acquetò.

God has given the heads of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb, into your hand; and what have I been able to do like you?” Then their temper desisted from off him in his speaking this thing.

4 Or Gedeone arrivò al Giordano, e, passandolo con que' trecent'uomini ch'[erano] con lui, [i quali] stanchi [come erano], pur perseguitavano [i Madianiti],

And Gideon comes to the Jordan, passing over, he and the three hundred men who [are] with him—wearied, yet pursuing—

5 disse a que' di Succot: Deh! date alcuni pezzi di pane alla gente che [è] al mio seguito; perciocchè [sono] stanchi, e io perseguito Zeba, e Salmunna, re di Madian.

and he says to the men of Succoth, “Please give cakes of bread to the people who [are] at my feet, for they [are] wearied, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.”

6 Ma i principali di Succot risposero: Hai tu già in mano le palme di Zeba e di Salmunna, che noi diamo del pane al tuo esercito?

And the heads of Succoth say, “Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand, that we give bread to your host?”

7 E Gedeone rispose: Perciò, quando il Signore mi avrà dato nelle mani Zeba e Salmunna, io vi sminuzzerò le carni con delle spine del deserto, e con triboli.

And Gideon says, “Therefore—in YHWH’s giving Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand—I have threshed your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness, and with the threshing instruments.”

8 Poi di là egli salì in Penuel, e parlò a que' di Penuel nella medesima maniera; ed essi gli risposero come que' di Succot aveano risposto.

And he goes up there [to] Penuel, and speaks to them thus; and the men of Penuel answer him as the men of Succoth answered.

9 Ed egli disse parimente a que' di Penuel: Quando io ritornerò in pace, io disfarò questa torre.

And he also speaks to the men of Penuel, saying, “In my turning back in peace, I break down this tower.”

10 Or Zeba e Salmunna, [erano] in Carcor, co' lor campi d'intorno a quindicimila [uomini, ch'erano] tutti quelli ch'erano rimasti di tutto il campo degli Orientali; e i morti [erano] cenventimila uomini, che potevano trar la spada.

And Zebah and Zalmunna [are] in Karkor, and their camps with them, about fifteen thousand, all who are left of all the camp of the sons of the east; and those falling [are] one hundred and twenty thousand men, drawing sword.

11 E Gedeone salì traendo [al paese di] coloro che abitano in padiglioni, dal lato orientale di Noba, e di Iogbea; e percosse il campo, il qual se ne stava in sicurtà.

And Gideon goes up the way of those who dwell in tents, on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and strikes the camp, and the camp was confident;

12 E Zeba, e Salmunna, fuggirono; ma egli li perseguitò, e prese i due re di Madian, Zeba, e Salmunna, e mise in rotta tutto il campo.

and Zebab and Zalmunna flee, and he pursues after them, and captures the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and he has caused all the camp to tremble.

13 Poi Gedeone, figliuolo di Ioas, se ne ritornò dalla battaglia, dalla salita di Heres.

And Gideon son of Joash turns back from the battle, at the going up of the sun,

14 E prese un fanciullo della gente di Succot, e lo domandò; ed egli gli descrisse i principali e gli Anziani di Succot, [ch'erano] settantasette uomini.

and captures a young man of the men of Succoth, and asks him, and he describes to him the heads of Succoth, and its elderly—seventy-seven men.

15 Poi [Gedeone] venne agli uomini di Succot, e disse: Ecco Zeba, e Salmunna, de' quali per ischerno voi mi diceste: Hai tu già nelle mani le palme di Zeba, e di Salmunna, che noi diamo del pane alla tua gente stanca?

And he comes to the men of Succoth and says, “Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom you reproached me, saying, Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand that we give bread to your men who [are] wearied?”

16 Ed egli prese gli Anziani della città, e delle spine del deserto, e de' triboli, e con essi castigò quegli uomini di Succot.

And he takes the elderly of the city, and [the] thorns of the wilderness, and the threshing instruments, and teaches the men of Succoth by them,

17 Disfece ancora la torre di Penuel, e uccise gli uomini della città.

and he has broken down the Tower of Penuel, and slays the men of the city.

18 Poi disse a Zeba, ed a Salmunna: Come [erano] quegli uomini che voi uccideste in Tabor? Ed essi risposero: Come tu appunto; ciascuno [di essi] pareva nel sembiante un figliuolo di re.

And he says to Zebah and to Zalmunna, “What manner of men [were they] whom you slew in Tabor?” And they say, “As you—so they, [each] one as the form of the king’s sons.”

19 Ed egli disse loro: Essi [erano] miei fratelli, figliuoli di mia madre; [come] il Signore vive, se voi aveste loro salvata la vita, io non vi ucciderei.

And he says, “They [were] my brothers—sons of my mother; YHWH lives, if you had kept them alive—I would not kill you.”

20 Poi disse a Ieter, suo primogenito: Levati, uccidili. Ma il fanciullo non trasse fuori la sua spada; perciocchè avea paura; conciossiachè egli [fosse] ancor giovanetto.

And he says to his firstborn Jether, “Rise, slay them”; and the young man has not drawn his sword, for he has been afraid, for he [is] yet a youth.

21 E Zeba, e Salmunna, dissero: Levati su tu, e avventati sopra noi; perciocchè quale [è] l'uomo [tale è] la sua forza. Gedeone adunque si levò, e uccise Zeba, e Salmunna, e prese le borchie che i lor cammelli aveano al collo.

And Zebah and Zalmunna say, “Rise and fall on us; for as the man—his might”; and Gideon rises, and slays Zebah and Zalmunna, and takes the crescents which [are] on the necks of their camels.

22 E gl'Israeliti dissero a Gedeone: Signoreggia sopra noi, tu, e il tuo figliuolo, e il figliuolo del tuo figliuolo; conciossiachè tu ci abbi salvati dalla mano de' Madianiti.

And the men of Israel say to Gideon, “Rule over us, both you, and your son, and your son’s son, for you have saved us from the hand of Midian.”

23 Ma Gedeone disse loro: Nè io, nè il mio figliuolo, signoreggeremo sopra voi; il Signore signoreggerà sopra voi.

And Gideon says to them, “I do not rule over you, nor does my son rule over you; YHWH rules over you.”

24 Poi Gedeone disse loro: Io vi farò una richiesta, che ciascun di voi mi dia il monile ch'egli ha predato; perciocchè coloro aveano de' monili d'oro, perchè erano Ismaeliti.

And Gideon says to them, “Let me ask a petition of you, and each give to me the ring of his prey, for they have rings of gold, for they [are] Ishmaelites.”

25 Ed essi dissero: Noi del tutto [te li] daremo. Steso adunque un ammanto, ciascuno vi gittò il monile ch'egli aveva predato.

And they say, “We certainly give”; and they spread out the garment, and each casts the ring of his prey there;

26 E il peso dei monili d'oro, che [Gedeone] avea chiesti, fu di mille settecento [sicli] d'oro; oltre alle borchie, e alle collane, e a' vestimenti di porpora, che i re di Madian aveano indosso; e oltre a' collari che i cammelli loro aveano al collo.

and the weight of the rings of gold which he asked for is one thousand and seven hundred [shekels] of gold, apart from the crescents, and the pendants, and the purple garments, which [are] on the kings of Midian, and apart from the chains which [are] on the necks of their camels,

27 E Gedeone fece di quell'[oro] un Efod, e lo pose in Ofra, sua città; e tutto Israele fornicò quivi dietro ad esso; e [ciò] fu in laccio a Gedeone e alla sua casa.

and Gideon makes it into an ephod, and sets it up in his city, in Ophrah, and all Israel go whoring after it there, and it is for a snare to Gideon and to his house.

28 Così Madian fu depresso davanti a' figliuoli d'Israle, e non alzò più il capo; e il paese ebbe riposo per quarant'anni, a' dì di Gedeone.

And Midian is humbled before the sons of Israel, and have not added to lift up their head; and the land rests [for] forty years in the days of Gideon.

29 E Ierubbaal, figliuolo di Ioas, se ne andò, e dimorò in casa sua.

And Jerubba‘al son of Joash goes and dwells in his own house,

30 Or Gedeone ebbe settanta figliuoli, ch'[erano] usciti della sua anca; conciossiachè egli avesse molte mogli.

and there have been seventy sons of Gideon, coming out of his loin, for he had many wives;

31 E la sua concubina, ch'[era] in Sichem, gli partorì anch'essa un figliuolo, al quale egli pose nome Abimelec.

and his concubine, who [is] in Shechem, has borne to him—even she—a son, and he appoints his name Abimelech.

32 Poi Gedeone, figliolo di Ioas, morì in buona vecchiezza, e fu seppellito nella sepoltura di Ioas, suo padre, in Ofra degli Abiezeriti.

And Gideon son of Joash dies, in a good old age, and is buried in the burying-place of his father Joash, in Ophrah of the Abi-Ezrite.

33 E, dopo che Gedeone fu morto, i figliuoli d'Israele tornarono a fornicare dietro a' Baali, e si costituirono Baal-berit per dio.

And it comes to pass, when Gideon [is] dead, that the sons of Israel turn back and go whoring after the Ba‘alim, and set Ba‘al-Berith over them for a god;

34 E non si ricordarono del Signore Iddio loro, il quale li avea riscossi dalle mani di tutti i lor nemici d'ogn'intorno;

and the sons of Israel have not remembered their God YHWH, who is delivering them out of the hand of all their surrounding enemies,

35 e non usarono benignità inverso la casa di Ierubbaal, [cioè], di Gedeone, secondo tutto il bene ch'egli avea operato inverso Israele.

neither have they done kindness with the house of Jerubba‘al—Gideon—according to all the good which he did with Israel.
