Giosué 8
1 POI il Signore disse a Giosuè: Non temere, e non ispaventarti; prendi teco tutta la gente di guerra, e levati, e sali contro ad Ai; vedi, io ti ho dato nelle mani il re d'Ai, e il suo popolo, e la sua città, e il suo paese.
After, the Lord saide vnto Ioshua, Feare not, neither bee thou faint hearted: take all the men of warre with thee and arise, go vp to Ai: beholde, I haue giuen into thine hand the King of Ai, and his people, and his citie, and his land.
2 Or fa' ad Ai, e al suo re, come tu hai fatto a Gerico, e al suo re; sol voi prenderete per voi le spoglie, e il bestiame di essa; metti degli agguati alla città, dalla parte di dietro di essa.
And thou shalt doe to Ai and to the King thereof, as thou didst vnto Iericho and to the King thereof: neuerthelesse the spoyle thereof and the cattell thereof shall ye take vnto you for a praye: thou shalt lye in wait against the citie on the backside thereof.
3 Giosuè adunque, e tutta la gente di guerra, si levò per salire contro ad Ai; e Giosuè scelse trentamila uomini, valenti e prodi, e li mandò [innanzi] di notte.
Then Ioshua arose, and all the men of warre to goe vp against Ai: and Ioshua chose out thirtie thousand strong men, and valiant, and sent them away by night.
4 E comandò loro, dicendo: Vedete, state agli agguati contro alla città, dalla parte di dietro della città; non vi allontanate molto dalla città, e siate tutti presti.
And he commanded them, saying, Behold, yee shall lye in waite against the citie on the backeside of the citie: goe not very farre from the citie, but be ye all in a readinesse.
5 Ed io, e tutto il popolo che [resta] meco, ci appresseremo alla città, e quando essi usciranno contro a noi, come la prima volta, noi fuggiremo davanti a loro
And I and all the people that are with me, will approche vnto the citie: and when they shall come out against vs, as they did at the first time, then will we flee before them.
6 (ed essi usciranno dietro a noi), finchè noi li abbiamo tratti fuor della città; perciocchè diranno: Essi fuggono davanti a noi, come la prima volta; e noi fuggiremo davanti a loro.
For they wil come out after vs, till we haue brought them out of the citie: for they will say, They flee before vs as at the first time: so we will flee before them.
7 Allora levatevi dagli agguati, e occupate la città; perciocchè il Signore Iddio vostro ve la darà nelle mani.
Then you shall rise vp from lying in waite and destroy the citie: for the Lord your God wil deliuer it into your hand.
8 E quando voi avrete presa la città, mettetevi il fuoco; fate secondo la parola del Signore; vedete, io [ve l]'ho comandato.
And when ye haue taken the citie, ye shall set it on fire: according to the commandement of the Lord shall ye do: behold, I haue charged you.
9 Così Giosuè li mandò; ed essi andarono agli agguati, e si fermarono fra Betel ed Ai, dal ponente d'Ai; e Giosuè dimorò quella notte per mezzo il popolo.
Ioshua then sent them foorth, and they went to lye in waite, and abode betweene Beth-el and Ai, on the Westside of Ai: but Ioshua lodged that night among the people.
10 E la mattina levatosi a buon'ora, fece la rassegna del popolo; ed egli con gli Anziani d'Israele salì davanti al popolo, verso Ai.
And Ioshua rose vp early in the morning, and nombred the people: and he and the Elders of Israel went vp before the people against Ai.
11 E tutta la gente di guerra ch'[era] con lui, salì, e si accostò, e giunse dirimpetto alla città, e pose campo dalla parte settentrionale d'Ai; e la valle [era] tra lui ed Ai.
Also all the men of warre that were with him went vp and drewe neere, and came against the citie, and pitched on the Northside of Ai: and there was a valley betweene them and Ai.
12 Prese ancora intorno a cinquemila uomini, i quali egli pose in agguati tra Betel ed Ai, dal Ponente della città.
And hee tooke about fiue thousande men, and set them to lye in waite betweene Beth-el and Ai, on the Westside of the citie.
13 E, dopo che tutto il popolo fu disposto, [cioè] tutto il campo, ch'[era] dal Settentrione della città, e il suo agguato, ch' [era] dal Ponente di essa, Giosuè camminò quella notte per lo mezzo della valle.
And the people set all the hoste that was on the Northside against the citie, and the liers in waite on the West, against the citie: and Ioshua went the same night into the mids of the valley.
14 E quando il re d'Ai ebbe [ciò] veduto, la gente della città si affrettò, e si levò a buon'ora. E il re, e tutto il suo popolo uscì alla campagna a punto preso ad incontrare Israele, per [dargli] battaglia; or egli non sapeva che vi erano degli agguati dietro alla città contro a lui.
And when the King of Ai sawe it, then the men of the citie hasted and rose vp earely, and went out against Israel to battell, hee and all his people at the time appointed, before the plaine: for he knew not that any lay in waite against him on the backeside of the citie.
15 Allora Giosuè, e tutto Israele, fecero vista d'essere sconfitti da loro, e fuggirono, traendo al deserto.
Then Ioshua and all Israel as beaten before them, fled by the way of the wildernes.
16 E tutto il popolo ch'[era] in Ai, fu adunato a grido, per perseguitarli. Così perseguitarono Giosuè, e furono tratti fuor della città.
And all the people of the citie were called together, to pursue after them: and they pursued after Ioshua, and were drawen away out of the city,
17 E non restò [alcun] uomo dentro ad Ai, nè dentro a Betel, che non uscisse dietro ad Israele; e lasciarono la città aperta, e perseguitarono Israele.
So that there was not a man left in Ai, nor in Beth-el, that went not out after Israel: and they left the citie open, and pursued after Israel.
18 Allora il Signore disse a Giosuè: Leva lo stendardo che tu hai in mano, verso Ai; perciocchè io te la darò nelle mani. E Giosuè levò verso la città lo stendardo ch'egli avea in mano.
Then the Lord said vnto Ioshua, Stretch out the speare that is in thine hande, towarde Ai: for I wil giue it into thine hand: and Ioshua stretched out the speare that hee had in his hand, toward the citie.
19 E tosto, come egli ebbe stesa la mano, gli agguati si levarono dal lor luogo, e corsero, ed entrarono nella città, e la presero, e si affrettarono a mettervi il fuoco.
And they that lay in wait, arose quickly out of their place, and ranne as soone as he had stretched out his hand, and they entred into the citie, and tooke it, and hasted, and set the citie on fire.
20 E gli uomini d'Ai, rivoltisi indietro, riguardarono; ed ecco, il fumo della città saliva al cielo, e non ebbero spazio per fuggir nè qua nè là; e il popolo che fuggiva verso il deserto si rivoltò contro a quelli che [lo] perseguitavano.
And the men of Ai looked behinde them, and sawe it: for loe, the smoke of the citie ascended vp to heauen, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: for the people that fled to the wildernesse, turned backe vpon the pursuers.
21 Giosuè adunque, e tutto Israele, veggendo che gli agguati aveano presa la città, e che il fumo di essa saliva, voltarono faccia, e percossero la gente d'Ai.
When Ioshua and all Israel sawe that they that lay in waite, had taken the citie, and that the smoke of the citie mounted vp, then they turned againe and slewe the men of Ai.
22 Quegli [altri] eziandio uscirono fuor della città incontro a loro; e così furono [rinchiusi] in mezzo d'Israele, [essendo] gli uni di qua, e gli altri di là; ed essi li sconfissero in modo, che non ne lasciarono alcuno di resto in vita.
Also the other issued out of the citie against them: so were they in the middes of Israel, these being on the one side, and the rest on the other side: and they slewe them, so that they let none of them remaine nor escape.
23 Presero ancora il re di Ai vivo, e lo menarono a Giosuè.
And the King of Ai they tooke aliue, and brought him to Ioshua.
24 E, dopo ch'Israele ebbe finito di uccidere tutti gli abitanti d'Ai nella campagna, nel deserto, dove li aveano perseguitati; e che tutti interamente furono abbattuti a fil di spada, tutto Israele se ne ritornò verso Ai, e la mise a fil di spada.
And when Israel had made an ende of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the fielde, that is, in the wildernesse, where they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sworde, vntill they were consumed, all the Israelites returned vnto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sworde.
25 E tutti quelli che caddero [morti] in quel giorno, così uomini come donne, furono dodicimila [persone ch'erano] tutta la gente d'Ai.
And all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelue thousande, euen all the men of Ai.
26 E Giosuè non ritrasse la sua mano, la quale egli avea stesa con lo stendardo, finchè non ebbe distrutti nel modo dell'interdetto tutti gli abitanti d'Ai.
For Ioshua drewe not his hande backe againe which he had stretched out with the speare, vntill hee had vtterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.
27 Gl'Israeliti predarono sol per loro il bestiame, e le spoglie di quella città, secondo ciò che il Signore avea comandato a Giosuè.
Onely the cattell and the spoyle of this citie, Israel tooke for a praye vnto themselues, according vnto the worde of the Lord, which hee commanded Ioshua.
28 E Giosuè bruciò Ai, e la ridusse in un monte di ruine in perpetuo, [come è] infino al dì d'oggi.
And Ioshua burnt Ai, and made it an heape for euer, and a wildernes vnto this day.
29 Appiccò ancora ad un legno il re d'Ai, [il qual vi rimase] fino alla sera; ma in sul tramontar del sole, Giosuè comandò che il corpo morto di esso fosse messo giù dal legno; e fu gittato all'entrata della porta della città, e sopra esso fu alzato un gran monte di pietre, [il qual dura] fino a questo giorno.
And the King of Ai hee hanged on a tree, vnto the euening. And as soone as the sunne was down, Ioshua commanded that they should take his carkeis downe from the tree, and cast it at the entring of ye gate of the city, and lay thereon a great heape of stones, that remaineth vnto this day.
30 ALLORA Giosuè edificò un altare al Signore Iddio d'Israele, nel monte di Ebal,
Then Ioshua built an altar vnto the Lord God of Israel, in mount Ebal,
31 secondo che Mosè, servitor del Signore, avea comandato a' figliuoli d'Israele, come [è] scritto nel Libro della Legge di Mosè; un altare di pietre intiere, sopra le quali non avea fatto passar ferro; e [i figliuoli d'Israele] offersero sopra esso olocausti al Signore, e sacrificarono sacrificii da render grazie.
As Moses the seruant of the Lord had commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the booke of the Lawe of Moses, an altar of whole stone, ouer which no man had lift an yron: and they offered thereon burnt offrings vnto the Lord, and sacrificed peace offerings.
32 Scrisse ancora quivi, sopra delle pietre un transunto della Legge di Mosè; la quale egli avea scritta, per esser posta davanti a' figliuoli d'Israele.
Also he wrote there vpon the stones, a rehearsall of the Lawe of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.
33 E tutto Israele, e i suoi Anziani, e i suoi Ufficiali, Prefetti, e i suoi Giudici, stavano in piè di qua e di là dall'Arca, dirimpetto a' sacerdoti Leviti, che portavano l'Arca del patto del Signore; [tutti dico], così forestieri, come natii [d'Israele]; l'una metà [stava] dirimpetto al monte di Gherizim, e l'altra metà dirimpetto al monte di Ebal; come Mosè, servitor del Signore, avea comandato, per benedire il popolo d'Israele la prima volta.
And all Israel (and their Elders, and officers and their iudges stoode on this side of the Arke, and on that side, before the Priestes of the Leuites, which bare the Arke of the couenant of the Lord) as well the stranger, as he that is borne in the countrey: halfe of them were ouer against mount Gerizim, and halfe of them ouer against mount Ebal, as Moses the seruant of the Lord had commanded before, that they should blesse the people of Israel.
34 E, dopo questo, egli lesse tutte le parole della Legge, le benedizioni e le maledizioni, secondo tutto ciò ch'è scritto nel Libro della Legge.
Then afterwarde hee read all the wordes of the Lawe, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the booke of the Lawe.
35 Ei non vi fu parola alcuna, di tutto ciò che Mosè avea comandato, che Giosuè non leggesse davanti a tutta la raunanza d'Israele, eziandio delle donne, e de' piccoli fanciulli, e de' forestieri che andavano fra loro.
There was not a worde of all that Moses had commanded, which Ioshua read not before all the Congregation of Israel, as well before the women and the children, as the stranger that was conuersant among them.
