Giobbe 34
1 ED Elihu proseguì a parlare, e disse:
And Elihu answers and says:
2 [Voi] savi, udite i miei ragionamenti; E [voi] intendenti, porgetemi l'orecchio.
“Hear, O wise men, my words, And, O knowing ones, give ear to me.
3 Perciocchè l'orecchio esamina i ragionamenti, Come il palato assapora ciò che si deve mangiare.
For the ear tries words, And the palate tastes to eat.
4 Proponiamoci la dirittura, Giudichiamo fra noi che cosa [sia] bene.
Let us choose judgment for ourselves, Let us know among ourselves what [is] good.
5 Conciossiachè Giobbe abbia detto: Io son giusto; Iddio mi ha tolta la mia ragione.
For Job has said, I have been righteous, And God has turned aside my right,
6 Mentirei io intorno alla mia ragione? La saetta, con la quale son ferito, [è] dolorosissima, Senza [che vi sia] misfatto [in me].
Against my right do I lie? My arrow [is] mortal—without transgression.
7 Quale [è] l'uomo simile a Giobbe, [Che] beve lo scherno come acqua?
Who [is] a man like Job? He drinks scoffing like water,
8 E [che] cammina in compagnia con gli operatori d'iniquità, E va con gli uomini empi?
And he has traveled for company With workers of iniquity, So as to go with men of wickedness.
9 Perciocchè egli ha detto: L'uomo non fa niun profitto Di rendersi grato a Dio.
For he has said, It does not profit a man When he delights himself with God.
10 Perciò, uomini di senno, ascoltatemi; Tolga Iddio che vi sia empietà in Dio, O perversità nell'Onnipotente.
Therefore, O men of heart, listen to me; Far be it from God to do wickedness, And [from] the Mighty to do perverseness,
11 Perciocchè egli rende all'uomo [secondo] l'opera sua, E fa trovare a ciascuno secondo la sua via.
For He repays the work of man to him, And according to the path of each He causes him to find.
12 Sì veramente Iddio non opera empiamente, E l'Onnipotente non perverte la ragione.
Indeed, truly, God does not do wickedly, And the Mighty does not pervert judgment.
13 Chi gli ha commesso il governo della terra? E chi [gli] ha imposta [la cura del] mondo tutto intiero?
Who has inspected for Himself the earth? And who has placed all the habitable world?
14 Se egli ponesse mente all'uomo, Egli ritrarrebbe a sè il suo alito, ed il suo soffio;
If He sets His heart on him, [If] He gathers His Spirit and His breath to Himself,
15 Ogni carne insieme trapasserebbe, E l'uomo ritornerebbe nella polvere.
All flesh expires together, And man returns to dust.
16 Se pur [tu hai] del senno, ascolta questo; Porgi l'orecchio alla voce de' miei ragionamenti.
And if [there is] understanding, hear this, Give ear to the voice of my words.
17 Di vero, colui che odia la dirittura signoreggerebbe egli? E condannerai tu colui che è sommamente giusto?
Indeed, does one hating justice govern? Or do you condemn the Most Just?
18 Direbbesi egli ad un re: Scellerato? E a' principi: Empio?
Who has said to a king, Worthless, To princes, Wicked?
19 [Quanto meno a colui] che non ha riguardo alla qualità de' principi, Ed [appo cui] non è riconosciuto il possente, Per essere antiposto al povero, Perchè essi tutti [sono] opera delle sue mani?
That has not accepted the person of princes, Nor has known the rich before the poor, For all of them [are] a work of His hands.
20 Essi muoiono in un momento, E di mezza notte [tutto] un popolo è conquassato, e perisce; E il potente è tolto via senza [opera di] mani.
[In] a moment they die, And at midnight people shake, And they pass away, And they remove the mighty without hand.
21 Perciocchè gli occhi suoi [son] sopra le vie dell'uomo, Ed egli vede tutti i passi di esso.
For His eyes [are] on the ways of each, And He sees all his steps.
22 Non [vi è] oscurità, nè ombra di morte alcuna, Ove si possan nascondere gli operatori d'iniquità.
There is no darkness nor death-shade, For workers of iniquity to be hidden there;
23 Perciocchè [Iddio] non ha [più] riguardo all'uomo, Quando esso è per venire in giudicio davanti a lui.
For He does not permit man anymore, To go to God in judgment,
24 Egli fiacca i possenti incomprensibilmente, E ne costituisce altri in luogo loro.
He breaks the mighty—no searching! And He appoints others in their stead.
25 Perciò, conoscendo egli le opere loro, Nel girar d'una notte son fiaccati,
Therefore He knows their works, And He has overturned by night, And they are bruised.
26 Egli li sbatte come empi, In luogo di molti spettatori;
As wicked He has struck them, In the place of beholders.
27 Perciocchè si son rivolti indietro da lui, E non hanno considerate tutte le sue vie;
Because that against right They have turned aside from after Him, And have considered none of His ways,
28 Facendo pervenire infino a lui il grido del povero, E facendogli udire lo strido degli afflitti.
To cause to come to Him The cry of the poor, And He hears the cry of the afflicted.
29 Se egli rimanda in pace, chi condannerà? E [se] nasconde la sua faccia, chi lo riguarderà? O sia una nazione [intiera], o un uomo [solo];
And He gives rest, and who makes wrong? And hides the face, and who beholds it? And in reference to a nation and to a man, [It is] the same.
30 Acciocchè l'uomo profano non regni [più] E che il popolo non [sia più tenuto] ne' lacci.
From the reigning of a profane man, From the snares of a people;
31 Certo [ei ti si conveniva indirizzarti] a Dio, dicendo: Io ho portato [la pena]; io non peccherò più.
For has any said to God: I have taken away, I do not do corruptly,
32 [Se vi è alcuna cosa], oltre a ciò che io veggo, mostramelo; Se io ho operato perversamente, io non continuerò più.
Besides [that which] I see, You show me, If I have done iniquity—I do not add?
33 Vorresti tu, ch'egli ti facesse la retribuzione di ciò ch'[è proceduto] da te? Sei tu che rifiuti ed eleggi, non già io; Di' pure ciò che tu sai.
Does He repay by you, that you have refused—That you choose, and not I? And what you have known, speak.
34 Gli uomini di senno diranno meco, E l'uomo savio mi acconsentirà,
Let men of heart say to me, And a wise man is listening to me:
35 Che Giobbe non parla con conoscimento, E che le sue parole non sono con intendimento.
Job—he does not speak with knowledge, And his words [are] not with wisdom.
36 O padre mio, sia pur Giobbe provato infino all'ultimo, Per cagione delle sue repliche, simili a quelle degli uomini iniqui.
My Father! Let Job be tried—to victory, Because of answers for men of iniquity,
37 Perciocchè [altrimenti] egli aggiungerà misfatto al suo peccato, Si batterà a palme fra noi, E moltiplicherà le parole sue contro a Dio.
For he adds to his sin, He vomits transgression among us, And multiplies his sayings to God.”
