Giobbe 1
1 V'ERA nel paese di Us, un uomo, il cui nome [era] Giobbe; e quell'uomo era intiero e diritto, e temeva Iddio, e si ritraeva dal male.
There was a man in the land of 'Uz, Job was his name; And this man was perfect and upright, and fearing God, and eschewing evil.
2 E gli erano nati sette figliuoli, e tre figliuole.
And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
3 E il suo bestiame era di settemila pecore, e di tremila cammelli, e di cinquecento paia di buoi, e di cinquecento asine, con una molto gran famiglia. E quell'uomo era il più grande di tutti gli orientali.
And his cattle consisted of seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and he had a very great store of servants: so that this man was greater than all the sons of the east.
4 Or i suoi figliuoli andavano, e facevano conviti [in] casa di ciascun [di loro], al suo giorno; e mandavano a chiamare le lor tre sorelle, per mangiare, e per bere con loro.
And his sons used to go and prepare a feast in the house of every one on his day; and they sent and invited their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
5 E quando aveano compiuta la volta de' giorni del convito, Giobbe mandava a santificarli; poi si levava la mattina, ed offeriva olocausti, [secondo] il numero di essi tutti; perciocchè Giobbe diceva: I miei figliuoli avranno forse peccato, ed avranno parlato male di Dio nei cuori loro. Così faceva sempre Giobbe.
And it happened, when the days of the feast were gone round, that Job sent and sanctified them, and he then rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of all of them; for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and have renounced God in their heart. In this manner used Job to do all the time.
6 Or avvenne un dì, che i figliuoli di Dio vennero a presentarsi dinanzi al Signore; e Satana venne anch'egli per mezzo loro.
Now it happened on a certain day, when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, that the Accuser also came in the midst of them.
7 E il Signore disse a Satana: Onde vieni? E Satana rispose al Signore, e disse: Da aggirar la terra, e da passeggiar per essa.
Then said the Lord unto the Accuser, Whence comest thou? And the Accuser answered the Lord, and said, From roaming over the earth, and from wandering through it.
8 E il Signore disse a Satana: Hai tu posto mente al mio servitore Giobbe? come nella terra non [vi è] uomo intiero e diritto, e che tema Iddio, e si ritragga dal male, come esso?
Then said the Lord unto the Accuser, Hast thou directed thy attention toward my servant Job; for there is none like him on the earth, a man perfect and upright, who feareth God, and escheweth evil?
9 E Satana rispose al Signore, e disse: Giobbe teme egli Iddio indarno?
Then answered the Accuser the Lord, and said, Is it for nought that Job feareth God?
10 Non hai tu intorniato, come di un riparo, lui, e la casa sua, ed ogni cosa sua? Tu hai benedetta l'opera delle sue mani, e il suo bestiame è sommamente moltiplicato nella terra.
Behold, thou hast indeed placed a fence about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side: the work of his hands hast thou blessed, and his cattle are far spread out in the land.
11 Ma stendi pur ora la tua mano, e tocca tutte le cose sue, [e vedrai] se non ti maledice in faccia.
But stretch only forth thy hand and touch all that he hath, and [see] whether he will not renounce thee to thy face.
12 E il Signore disse a Satana: Ecco, tutto quello ch'egli ha [è] in mano tua; sol non metter la mano sopra lui. E Satana si partì dal cospetto del Signore.
Then said the Lord unto the Accuser, Behold, all that is his be in thy power; only against himself shalt thou not stretch forth thy hand. The Accuser went thereupon away from the presence of the Lord.
13 Ed avvenne un dì, mentre i figliuoli e le figliuole di Giobbe mangiavano, e bevevano del vino in casa del lor fratel maggiore,
And it happened on a certain day, when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their first-born brother,
14 che un messo venne a Giobbe, e [gli] disse: I buoi aravano, e le asine pasturavano allato ad essi;
That a messenger came unto Job, and said, The oxen were ploughing, and the she-asses were feeding beside them:
15 ed i Sabei sono scorsi, e li hanno rapiti, ed hanno messi a fil di spada i servitori; ed io tutto solo sono scampato per rapportartelo.
When the Sabeans made an incursion, and took them away, and the young men they slew with the edge of the sword; and I am escaped, none but myself alone, to tell it unto thee.
16 Mentre costui parlava ancora, ne venne un altro, che disse: Il fuoco di Dio è caduto dal cielo, e si è appreso al minuto bestiame, ed a' servitori, e li ha consumati; ed io tutto solvo sono scampato per rapportartelo.
This one was yet speaking, when another came, and said, A fire of God fell from heaven, and burnt among the sheep and the young men, and consumed them; and I am escaped, none but myself alone, to tell it unto thee.
17 Mentre costui parlava ancora, ne venne un altro, che disse: De' Caldei, in tre schiere, sono scorsi sopra i cammelli, e li hanno rapiti, ed hanno messi a fil di spada i servitori; ed io tutto solo sono scampato per rapportartelo.
This one was yet speaking, when another came, and said, The Chaldeans posted themselves in three divisions, and made an inroad against the camels, and took them away, and the young men they slew with the edge of the sword; and I am escaped, none but myself alone, to tell it unto thee.
18 Mentre costui parlava, ne venne un altro, che disse: I tuoi figliuoli e le tue figliuole mangiavano e bevevano del vino in casa del lor fratel maggiore;
While this one was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their first-born brother:
19 ed ecco, un gran vento è venuto di là dal deserto, il quale ha dato ne' quattro canti della casa, ed ella è caduta sopra i giovani, onde son morti; ed io tutto solo sono scampato per rapportartelo.
When, behold, a violent wind came from the direction of the wilderness, and struck against the four corners of the house, so that it fell upon the young men, and they died; and I am escaped, none but myself alone, to tell it unto thee.
20 Allora Giobbe si levò, e stracciò il suo mantello, e si tondè il capo, e si gittò a terra, e adorò.
Then arose Job, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and prostrated himself.
21 E disse: Io sono uscito ignudo del seno di mia madre, ignudo altresì ritornerò là. Il Signore ha dato, il Signore ha tolto; sia benedetto il Nome del Signore.
And he said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; may the name of the Lord be blessed.
22 In tutto ciò Giobbe non peccò, e non attribuì a Dio nulla di mal fatto.
With all this did Job not sin, and attributed no injustice to God.
