Esdra 10

1 ORA, mentre Esdra faceva orazione, e confessione, piangendo, e prostrato davanti alla Casa di Dio, una grandissima moltitudine d'Israele, d'uomini, e di donne, e di fanciulli, si adunò appresso di lui; perciocchè il popolo piangeva d'un gran pianto.

Now, when Ezra had prayed and when he had made confession, weeping and casting himself down, before the house of God, there gathered unto him out of Israel, an exceeding large convocation—men and women and children, for the people wept with a very bitter weeping.

2 Allora Secania, figliuolo di Iehiel, dei figliuoli di Elam, parlò ad Esdra, e gli disse: Noi abbiam misfatto contro all'Iddio nostro, avendo menate donne straniere, d'infra i popoli di questo paese; ma ora vi è pure alcuna speranza ad Israele intorno a questo.

Then responded Shecaniah son of Jehiel of the sons of Elam, and said unto Ezra, We, have been faithful with our God, and have married foreign women from among the peoples of the land, —yet, now, there is hope for Israel concerning this thing.

3 Ora dunque, patteggiamo con l'Iddio nostro, che noi rimanderemo tutte queste donne, ed i [figliuoli] nati da esse, secondo il consiglio del Signore, e di coloro che tremano al comandamento dell'Iddio nostro; e siane fatto secondo la Legge.

Now, therefore, let us solemnize a covenant unto our God—to put away all the women and such as have been born of them, in the counsel of my lord, and them who tremble at the commandment of our God, —and, according to the law, let it be done.

4 Levati; perciocchè quest'affare ti appartiene, e noi [saremo] teco; prendi animo, e metti la mano all'opera.

Arise, for, upon thee, resteth the thing, but, we, are with thee, —be strong, and act.

5 Allora Esdra si levò, e fece giurare a' principali de' sacerdoti, de' Leviti, e di tutto Israele, che farebbero secondo quelle parole. Ed essi [lo] giurarono.

Then arose Ezra and made the rulers of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel, swear to do according to this word—and they sware.

6 Poi Esdra si levò d'innanzi alla Casa di Dio, e andò nella camera di Giohanan, figliuolo di Eliasib; ed essendo entrato dentro, non mangiò pane, nè bevve acqua; perciocchè egli faceva cordoglio per lo misfatto di coloro ch'erano stati in cattività.

Then arose Ezra from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jehohanan son of Eliashib, —and, when he came thither, bread, did he not eat, and, water, did he not drink, for he was mourning over the unfaithfulness of them of the Exile.

7 Poi fecero andare un bando per Giuda e per Gerusalemme, che tutti quelli ch'erano stati in cattività si adunassero in Gerusalemme;

Then made they a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem, unto all the Sons of the Exile, to gather themselves together unto Jerusalem;

8 e che chiunque non verrebbe infra tre giorni, secondo il consiglio preso da' principali e dagli Anziani, tutti i suoi beni sarebbero messi all'interdetto, ed egli sarebbe separato dalla raunanza di coloro ch'erano stati in cattività.

and, whosoever should not come within three days, according to the counsel of the rulers and the elders, all his goods should be devoted, —and, himself, be separated from the convocation of them of the Exile.

9 Così tutti gli uomini di Giuda e di Beniamino si adunarono in Gerusalemme infra il terzo giorno; e ciò [fu] il ventesimo [giorno] del nono mese; e tutto il popolo si fermò nella piazza della Casa di Dio, tremando, per questa cosa, e per le gran pioggie.

Then were gathered together all the men of Judah and Benjamin unto Jerusalem, within three days, the same, was the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month, —and all the people remained in the broadway of the house of God, trembling concerning the thing, and because of the heavy rains.

10 Ed il sacerdote Esdra si levò e disse loro: Voi avete misfatto, avendo menate mogli straniere, per accrescer le colpe d'Israele.

Then arose Ezra the priest, and said unto them, Ye, have acted unfaithfully, and have married foreign women, —to add unto the guilt of Israel.

11 Ora dunque fate confessione al Signore Iddio de' vostri padri, e fate la sua volontà, e separatevi da' popoli del paese, e dalle donne straniere.

Now, therefore, make confession unto Yahweh God of your fathers, and do his pleasure, —and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the foreign women.

12 E tutta la raunanza rispose, e disse ad alta voce: Noi siamo obbligati di fare come tu hai detto.

Then responded all the convocation and said, with a loud voice, —Thus, according to thy word concerning us, must it be done.

13 Ma il popolo [è] in gran numero, e il tempo [è] grandemente piovoso, e non è possibile di star fuori; e l'opera non [è] d'uno, nè di due giorni; perciocchè noi siamo molti che abbiamo misfatto in questo.

Nevertheless, the people, are many, and, the season, is that of the heavy rains, and we are not able to stand outside, —and, the business, is not one for a single day, nor yet for two, for we have abundantly transgressed, in this thing.

14 Ora trovinsi [insieme] i capi nostri, [capi] di tutta la raunanza; e con loro [sieno] gli Anziani, ed i giudici di ciascuna città; e che ogni uomo, d'infra tutti quelli che [sono] nelle nostre città, che ha menata moglie straniera, venga a' tempi assegnati; e con loro gli Anziani e i giudici di ciascuna città, finchè abbiamo stornato da noi l'ardore dell'ira dell'Iddio nostro per questa cosa.

Let, we beseech thee, our rulers take up their station for all the convocation, and, all who, throughout our cities, have married foreign women, let them come in at times appointed, and, with them, the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the glow of the anger of our God be turned from us, concerning this matter.

15 Or Gionatan, figliuolo di Asael, e Iahazia, figliuolo di Ticva, furono costituiti sopra questo affare; e Mesullam, e Sabbetai, Leviti, aiutarono loro.

Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah, made a stand against this, —and, Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite, helped them.

16 E quelli ch'erano stati in cattività fecero così. E il sacerdote Esdra, e i capi delle [famiglie] paterne, secondo le famiglie loro paterne, tutti [nominati] per li nomi [loro], furono messi da parte; e sedettero al primo giorno del decimo mese, per prender conoscenza del fatto;

But the Sons of the Exile, did thus, and Ezra the priest separated to himself certain men—ancestral heads by their ancestral houses, and all of them by name, —and they took their seats on the first day of the tenth month to search into the matter;

17 ed ebbero finito, con tutti quelli che aveano menate mogli straniere, infra il primo giorno del primo mese.

and they made an end with all the men who had married foreign women, —by the first day of the first month.

18 E fra i figliuoli de' sacerdoti, si trovarono questi che aveano menate moglie straniere, [cioè], fra i figliuoli di Iesua, figliuolo di Iosadac, e fra i suoi fratelli, Maaseia, ed Eliezer, e Iarib, e Ghedalia;

Now there were found, of the sons of the priests, who had married foreign women, —of the sons of Jeshua son of Jozadak, and his brethren, Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah;

19 ed essi diedero la mano, [promettendo] di mandar via le lor mogli; e, come colpevoli, [offerso] un montone per la lor colpa;

and they gave their hand, that they would put away their wives, —and, being guilty, [they offered] a ram of the flock for their guilt.

20 e de' figliuoli d'Immer, Hanani, e Zebadia;

And, of the sons of Immer, Hanani, and Zebadiah.

21 e de' figliuoli di Harim, Maaseia, ed Elia, e Semaia, e Iehiel, ed Uzzia;

And, of the sons of Harim, Maaseiah and Elijah and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah.

22 e de' figliuoli di Pashur, Elioenai, Maaseia, Ismael, Natanael, Iozabad, ed Elasa.

And, of the sons of Passhur, Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasar.

23 E de' Leviti, Iozabad, Simi, e Chelaia (il quale [ancora si chiamava] Chelita), Petahia, Giuda, ed Eliezer.

And, of the Levites, Jozabad and Shimei, and Kelaiah, the same, is Kelita, Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

24 E de' cantori, Eliasib. E de' portinai, Sallum, e Telem, ed Uri.

And, of the singers, Eliashib. And, of the doorkeepers, Shallum and Telem and Uri.

25 E degl'Israeliti: de' figliuoli di Paros, Ramia, ed Izzia, e Malchia, e Miamin, ed Eleazaro, e Malchia, e Benaia;

And, of Israel, of the sons of Parosh, Ramiah and Izziah and Malchijah and Mijamin and Eleazar, and Malchijah, and Benaiah.

26 e de' figliuoli di Elam, Mattania, e Zaccaria, e Iehiel, ed Abdi, e Ieremot, ed Elia;

And, of the sons of Elam, Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel and Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Elijah.

27 e de' figliuoli di Zattu, Elioenai, ed Eliasib, e Mattania, e Ieremot, e Zabad, ed Aziza;

And, of the sons of Zattu, Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza.

28 e de' figliuoli di Bebai, Iohanan, Hanania, Zabbai, ed Atlai;

And, of the sons of Bebai, Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, Athlai.

29 e de' figliuoli di Bani, Mesullam, e Malluc, ed Adaia, e Iasub, e Seal, e Ramot;

And, of the sons of Bani, Meshullam, Malluch, and Adaiah, Jashub, and Sheal, Jeremoth.

30 e de' figliuoli di Pahat-Moab, Adna, e Chelal, e Benaia, e Maaseia, e Mattania, e Besaleel, e Binnui, e Manasse;

And, of the sons of Pahath-moab, Adna and Chelal, —Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, and Binnui, and Manasseh.

31 e [de]' figliuoli di Harim, Eliezer, Issia, Malchia, Semaia, Simeone,

And, [of] the sons of Harim, Eliezer, Isshijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon;

32 Beniamino, Malluc, Semaria;

Benjamin, Malluch, Shemariah.

33 de' figliuoli di Hasum, Mattenai, Mattatta, Zabad, Elifelet, Ieremai, Manasse, Simi;

Of the sons of Hashum, Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, —Jeremai, Manasseh, Shimei.

34 de' figliuoli di Bani, Maadai, Amram ed Uel,

Of the sons of Bani, Maadai, Amram, and Uel;

35 Benaia, Bedia, Cheluhu,

Benaiah, Bedeiah, Cheluhu;

36 Vania, Meremot, Eliasib,

Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib;

37 Mattania, Mettenai e Iaasai,

Mettaniah, Mattenai, and Jaasu;

38 Bani, Binnui, Simi,

and Bani, and Binnui, Shimei;

39 Selemia, Natan, Adaia,

and Shelemiah, and Nathan, and Adaiah;

40 Machnadbai, Sasai, Sarai,

Machnadebai, Shashai, Sharai;

41 Azreel, Selemia, Semaria,

Azarel, and Shelemiah, Shemariah;

42 Sallum, Amaria, e Giuseppe;

Shallum, Amariah, Joseph.

43 e de' figliuoli di Nebo, Ieiel, Mattitia, Zabad, Zebina, Iaddau, Ioel, e Benaia.

Of the sons of Nebo, Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, —Iddo, and Joel, Benaiah.

44 Tutti costoro aveano prese mogli straniere; ed [alcuni] di loro avevano delle mogli delle quali avevano generati figliuoli.

All these, had taken foreign women, —and had begotten of them children.
