Ecclesiaste 4
1 MA di nuovo io ho vedute tutte le oppressioni che si fanno sotto il sole; ed ecco, le lagrime degli oppressati i quali non hanno alcun consolatore, nè forza [da potere scampar] dalle mani de' loro oppressatori; non hanno, [dico], alcun consolatore.
So I turned and considered all the oppressions that are wrought vnder the sunne, and beholde the teares of the oppressed, and none comforteth them: and lo, the strength is of the hand of them that oppresse them, and none comforteth them.
2 Onde io pregio i morti, che già son morti, più che i viventi, che sono in vita fino ad ora.
Wherefore I praysed the dead which now are dead, aboue the liuing, which are yet aliue.
3 Anzi più felice che gli uni, e che gli altri, [giudico] colui che fino ad ora non è stato; il qual non ha vedute le opere malvage che si fanno sotto il sole.
And I count him better then them both, which hath not yet bin: for he hath not seene the euill workes which are wrought vnder the sunne.
4 Oltre a ciò, ho veduto che in ogni fatica, ed in ogni opera ben fatta, l'uomo è invidiato dal suo prossimo. Ciò ancora [è] vanità, e tormento di spirito.
Also I beheld all trauaile, and all perfection of workes that this is ye enuie of a man against his neighbour: this also is vanitie and vexation of spirit.
5 Lo stolto piega le mani, e mangia la sua carne, [dicendo: ]
The foole foldeth his hands, and eateth vp his owne flesh.
6 Meglio [è] una menata con riposo, che amendue i pugni pieni [con] travaglio, e [con] tormento di spirito.
Better is an handfull with quietnesse, then two handfuls with labour and vexation of spirit.
7 Ma di nuovo ho veduta un'[altra] vanità sotto il sole.
Againe I returned, and sawe vanitie vnder the sunne.
8 Vi è tale, [che è] solo, e non ha alcun secondo; [ed] anche non ha figliuoli, nè fratello, e pure egli si affatica senza fine, [ed] anche l'occhio suo non è giammai sazio di ricchezze; e [non pensa: ] Per chi mi affatico, e privo la mia persona di bene? Questo ancora [è] vanità, ed un mal affare.
There is one alone, and there is not a second, which hath neither sonne nor brother, yet is there none end of all his trauaile, neither can his eye be satisfied with riches: neither doeth he thinke, For whome doe I trauaile and defraude my soule of pleasure? this also is vanitie, and this is an euill trauaile.
9 Due valgono meglio che un [solo]; conciossiachè essi abbiano un buon premio della lor fatica.
Two are better then one: for they haue better wages for their labour.
10 Perciocchè, se l'uno cade, l'altro rileva il suo compagno; ma guai a chi è solo! perciocchè [se] cade, non [vi è] alcun secondo per rilevarlo.
For if they fal, the one wil lift vp his felow: but wo vnto him that is alone: for he falleth, and there is not a second to lift him vp.
11 Oltre a ciò, se due dormono insieme, si riscalderanno; ma un [solo] come potrà egli riscaldarsi?
Also if two sleepe together, then shall they haue heate: but to one how should there be heate?
12 E se alcuno fa forza all'uno, i due gli resisteranno; anche il cordone a tre fili non si rompe prestamente.
And if one ouercome him, two shall stand against him: and a threefolde coard is not easily broken.
13 Meglio vale il fanciullo povero e savio, che il re vecchio e stolto, il qual non sa più essere ammonito.
Better is a poore and wise childe, then an olde and foolish King, which will no more be admonished.
14 Perciocchè [tale] esce di carcere, per regnare; tale altresì, che è nato nel suo reame, diventa povero.
For out of the prison he commeth forth to reigne: when as he that is borne in his kingdome, is made poore.
15 Io ho veduto che tutti i viventi sotto il sole vanno col fanciullo, [che è] la seconda persona, che ha da succedere al re.
I behelde all the liuing, which walke vnder the sunne, with the second childe, which shall stand vp in his place.
16 Tutto il popolo senza fine [va con lui, come aveano fatto] tutti coloro che erano stati davanti a loro; quelli eziandio che verranno appresso, non si rallegreranno di lui. Certo, questo ancora [è] vanità, e tormento di spirito.
There is none ende of all the people, nor of all that were before them, and they that come after, shall not reioyce in him: surely this is also vanitie and vexation of spirit.
