1 Pietro 2

1 Deposta adunque ogni malizia, ed ogni frode, e le ipocrisie, ed invidie, ed ogni maldicenza;

Rid yourselves therefore of all ill-will and all deceitfulness, of insincerity and envy, and of all evil speaking.

2 come fanciulli pur ora nati, appetite il latte puro della parola, acciocchè per esso cresciate.

Thirst, like newly-born infants, for pure milk for the soul, that by it you may grow up to salvation;

3 Se pure avete gustato che il Signore è buono;

if you have had any experience of the goodness of the Lord.

4 al quale accostandovi, [come alla] pietra viva, riprovata dagli uomini, ma dinanzi a Dio eletta, preziosa;

Come to Him, the ever-living Stone, rejected indeed by men as worthless, but in God's esteem chosen and held in honour.

5 ancora voi, come pietre vive, siete edificati, [per essere] una casa spirituale, un sacerdozio santo, per offerire sacrificii spirituali, accettevoli a Dio per Gesù Cristo.

And be yourselves also like living stones that are being built up into a spiritual house, to become a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

6 Per la qual cosa ancora è contenuto nella scrittura: Ecco, io pongo in Sion la pietra del capo del cantone, eletta, preziosa; e chi crederà in essa non sarà punto svergognato.

For it is contained in Scripture, "See, I am placing on Mount Zion a Cornerstone, chosen, and held in honour, and he whose faith rests on Him shall never have reason to feel ashamed."

7 A voi adunque, che credete, [ella è] quella cosa preziosa; ma a' disubbidienti [è, come è detto]: La pietra, che gli edificatori hanno riprovata, è divenuta il capo del cantone, e pietra d'incappo, e sasso d'intoppo.

To you believers, therefore, that honour belongs; but for unbelievers-- "A Stone which the builders rejected has been made the Cornerstone,"

8 I quali s'intoppano nella parola, essendo disubbidienti; a che ancora sono stati posti.

and "a Stone for the foot to strike against, and a Rock to stumble over." Their foot strikes against it because they are disobedient to God's Message, and to this they were appointed.

9 Ma voi [siete] la generazione eletta; il real sacerdozio, la gente santa, il popolo d'acquisto; acciocchè predichiate le virtù di colui che vi ha dalle tenebre chiamati alla sua maravigliosa luce.

But you are a chosen race, a priesthood of kingly lineage, a holy nation, a people belonging specially to God, that you may make known the perfections of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light.

10 I quali già non [eravate] popolo, ma ora [siete] popolo di Dio; a' quali [già] non era stata fatta misericordia, ma ora vi è stata fatta misericordia.

Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God. Once you had not found mercy, but now you have.

11 DILETTI, io vi esorto che, come avveniticci e forestieri, vi asteniate dalle carnali concupiscenze, le quali guerreggiano contro all'anima;

Dear friends, I entreat you as pilgrims and foreigners not to indulge the cravings of your lower natures: for all such cravings wage war upon the soul.

12 avendo una condotta onesta fra i Gentili; acciocchè, là dove sparlano di voi come di malfattori, glorifichino Iddio, nel giorno della visitazione, per le [vostre] buone opere, che avranno vedute.

Live honourable lives among the Gentiles, in order that, although they now speak against you as evil-doers, they may yet witness your good conduct, and may glorify God on the day of reward and retribution.

13 Siate adunque soggetti ad ogni podestà creata dagli uomini, per l'amor del Signore: al re, come al sovrano;

Submit, for the Lord's sake, to every authority set up by man, whether it be to the Emperor as supreme ruler,

14 ed ai governatori, come a [persone] mandate da lui, in vendetta de' malfattori, e in lode di quelli che fanno bene.

or to provincial Governors as sent by him for the punishment of evil-doers and the encouragement of those who do what is right.

15 Perciocchè tale è la volontà di Dio: che facendo bene, turiate la bocca all'ignoranza degli uomini stolti;

For it is God's will that by doing what is right you should thus silence the ignorant talk of foolish persons.

16 come liberi, ma non avendo la libertà per coverta di malizia; anzi, come servi di Dio.

Be free men, and yet do not make your freedom an excuse for base conduct, but be God's bondservants.

17 Onorate tutti, amate la fratellanza, temete Iddio, rendete onore al re.

Honour every one. Love the brotherhood, fear God, honour the Emperor.

18 SERVI, siate con ogni timore, soggetti a' [vostri] signori; non solo a' buoni, e moderati; ma a' ritrosi ancora.

Household servants, be submissive to your masters, and show them the utmost respect--not only if they are kind and thoughtful, but also if they are unreasonable.

19 Perciocchè questo [è] cosa grata, se alcuno, per la coscienza di Dio, sofferisce molestie, patendo ingiustamente.

For it is an acceptable thing with God, if, from a sense of duty to Him, a man patiently submits to wrong, when treated unjustly.

20 Imperocchè, qual gloria [è egli], se, peccando ed essendo puniti, voi [il] sofferite? ma, se facendo bene, e pur patendo, voi [il] sofferite, ciò [è] cosa grata dinnanzi a Iddio.

If you do wrong and receive a blow for it, what credit is there in your bearing it patiently? But if when you do right and suffer for it you bear it patiently, this is an acceptable thing with God.

21 Poichè a questo siete stati chiamati; perciocchè Cristo ha patito anch'egli per noi, lasciandoci un esempio, acciocchè voi seguitiate le sue pedate.

And it is to this you were called; because Christ also suffered on your behalf, leaving you an example so that you should follow in His steps.

22 Il qual non fece alcun peccato, nè fu trovata frode alcuna nella sua bocca.

He never sinned, and no deceitful language was ever heard from His mouth.

23 Il quale, oltraggiato, non oltraggiava all'incontro; patendo, non minacciava; ma [si] rimetteva in man di colui che giudica giustamente.

When He was reviled, He did not answer with reviling; when He suffered He uttered no threats, but left His wrongs in the hands of the righteous Judge.

24 Il quale ha portato egli stesso i nostri peccati nel suo corpo, in sul legno; acciocchè, morti al peccato, viviamo a giustizia; per lo cui lividore voi siete stati sanati.

The burden of our sins He Himself carried in His own body to the Cross and bore it there, so that we, having died so far as our sins are concerned, may live righteous lives. By His wounds yours have been healed.

25 Perciocchè voi eravate come pecore erranti; ma ora siete stati convertiti al Pastore, e al Vescovo delle anime vostre.

For you were straying like lost sheep, but now you have come back to the Shepherd and Protector of your souls.
