Numeri 21
1 Il re cananeo di Arad, che abitava il Negheb, appena seppe che Israele veniva per la via di Atarim, attaccò battaglia contro Israele e fece alcuni prigionieri.
The Canaanite king of Arad who lived in the Negev learned that the Israelites were approaching on the road to Atharim. He went and attacked Israel and took some of them prisoners.
2 Allora Israele fece un voto al Signore e disse: «Se tu mi metti nelle mani questo popolo, le loro città saranno da me votate allo sterminio».
So Israel made a solemn promise to the Lord: “If you hand these people over to us, we pledge to completely destroy their towns.”
3 Il Signore ascoltò la voce di Israele e gli mise nelle mani i Cananei; Israele votò allo sterminio i Cananei e le loro città e quel luogo fu chiamato Corma.
The Lord responded to their appeal and handed over the Canaanites to them. The Israelites completely destroyed them and their towns, and named the place Hormah.
4 Poi gli Israeliti partirono dal monte Cor, dirigendosi verso il Mare Rosso per aggirare il paese di Edom. Ma il popolo non sopportò il viaggio.
The Israelites left Mount Hor by the road leading to the Red Sea so they could avoid traveling through the country of Edom. But the people became bad-tempered on the way
5 Il popolo disse contro Dio e contro Mosè: «Perché ci avete fatti uscire dall'Egitto per farci morire in questo deserto? Perché qui non c'è né pane né acqua e siamo nauseati di questo cibo così leggero».
and made complaints against God and against Moses, saying, “Why did you lead us out of Egypt to die in the desert? We don't have bread or water, and we hate this awful food!”
6 Allora il Signore mandò fra il popolo serpenti velenosi i quali mordevano la gente e un gran numero d'Israeliti morì.
So the Lord sent poisonous snakes to attack them, and many Israelites were bitten and died.
7 Allora il popolo venne a Mosè e disse: «Abbiamo peccato, perché abbiamo parlato contro il Signore e contro di te; prega il Signore che allontani da noi questi serpenti». Mosè pregò per il popolo.
The people went to see Moses and told him, “We were wrong to make complaints against the Lord and against you. Please pray to the Lord to get rid of the snakes from us.” Moses prayed to the Lord on their behalf.
8 Il Signore disse a Mosè: «Fatti un serpente e mettilo sopra un'asta; chiunque, dopo essere stato morso, lo guarderà resterà in vita».
The Lord told Moses, “Make a model of a snake and put it on a pole. When anyone who has been bitten looks at it, they will live.”
9 Mosè allora fece un serpente di rame e lo mise sopra l'asta; quando un serpente aveva morso qualcuno, se questi guardava il serpente di rame, restava in vita.
Moses made a snake out of bronze and put it on a pole. Those who looked at it did live.
10 Poi gli Israeliti partirono e si accamparono a Obot;
The Israelites left and camped at Oboth.
11 partiti da Obot si accamparono a Iie-Abarim nel deserto che sta di fronte a Moab dal lato dove sorge il sole.
Then they moved on from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim in the desert on the east side of Moab.
12 Di là partirono e si accamparono nella valle di Zered.
They left there and camped in the Valley of Zered.
13 Poi di lì si mossero e si accamparono sull'altra riva dell'Arnon, che scorre nel deserto e proviene dai confini degli Amorrei; l'Arnon infatti è il confine di Moab fra Moab e gli Amorrei.
Then they moved on from there and camped on the far side of the Arnon River, in the desert near Amorite territory. The Arnon River is the border between the Moab and the Amorites.
14 «Vaeb in Sufa e i torrenti, l'Arnon Per questo si dice nel libro delle Guerre del Signore:
That's why the Book of the Wars of the Lord refers to “the town of Waheb in Suphah and the canyon of the Arnon,
15 e il pendio dei torrenti, che declina verso la sede di Ar e si appoggia alla frontiera di Moab».
the canyon slopes that reach the village of Ar that lies on the border with Moab.”
16 Di là andarono a Beer. Questo è il pozzo di cui il Signore disse a Mosè: «Raduna il popolo e io gli darò l'acqua».
From there they moved on to Beer, the well where the Lord told Moses, “Have the people gather together so I can give them water.”
17 «Sgorga, o pozzo: cantatelo! Allora Israele cantò questo canto:
Then the Israelites sang this song: “Pour out water, well! Everyone of you sing to it!
18 Pozzo che i principi hanno scavato, che i nobili del popolo hanno perforato con lo scettro, con i loro bastoni». Poi dal deserto andarono a Mattana,
The tribal chiefs dug the well; yes the leaders of the people dug the well with their rods of authority and their walking sticks.” The Israelites left the desert and carried on to Mattanah.
19 da Mattana a Nacaliel, da Nacaliel a Bamot
From Mattanah they traveled to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth,
20 e da Bamot alla valle che si trova nelle steppe di Moab presso la cima del Pisga, che è di fronte al deserto.
and from Bamoth to the valley in the territory of Moab where the top of Mount Pisgah looks down on the wastelands.
21 Israele mandò ambasciatori a Sicon, re degli Amorrei, per dirgli:
Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, with the following request:
22 «Lasciami passare per il tuo paese; noi non devieremo per i campi, né per le vigne, non berremo l'acqua dei pozzi; seguiremo la via Regia finché abbiamo oltrepassato i tuoi confini».
“Please allow us to travel through your country. We won't cross any of your fields or vineyards, or drink water from any of your wells. We will stay on the King's Highway until we have passed through your country.”
23 Ma Sicon non permise a Israele di passare per i suoi confini; anzi radunò tutta la sua gente e uscì contro Israele nel deserto; giunse a Iaas e diede battaglia a Israele.
But Sihon refused to allow the Israelites to travel through his territory. Instead, he called out his whole army and went out to meet the Israelites head-on in the desert. When he arrived at Jahaz, he attacked the Israelites.
24 Israele lo sconfisse, passandolo a fil di spada, e conquistò il suo paese dall'Arnon fino allo Iabbok, estendendosi fino alla regione degli Ammoniti, perché la frontiera degli Ammoniti era forte.
The Israelites defeated them, killing them with their swords. They took over his land from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River —but only as far as the border of the Ammonites, because it was well defended.
25 Israele prese tutte quelle città e abitò in tutte le città degli Amorrei, cioè in Chesbon e in tutte le città del suo territorio;
The Israelites conquered all the Amorite towns and took them over, including Heshbon and its surrounding villages.
26 Chesbon infatti era la città di Sicon, re degli Amorrei, il quale aveva mosso guerra al precedente re di Moab e gli aveva tolto tutto il suo paese fino all'Arnon.
Heshbon was the capital of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had fought against the previous king of Moab and had taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon River.
27 «Entrate in Chesbon! Ben costruita e fondata è la città di Sicon! Per questo dicono i poeti:
That's why the old songwriters wrote: “Come to Heshbon and have it be rebuilt; restore the town of Sihon!
28 Perché un fuoco uscì da Chesbon, una fiamma dalla città di Sicon divorò Ar-Moab, inghiottì le alture dell'Arnon.
For a fire blazed out from Heshbon, a flame from the town of Sihon. It burned up Ar in Moab where the rulers live on the high places of Arnon.
29 Guai a te, Moab, sei perduto, popolo di Camos! Egli ha reso fuggiaschi i suoi figli e le sue figlie ha dato in schiavitù al re degli Amorrei Sicon.
What a disaster you face, Moab! You are all going to die, people of Chemosh! You handed over your sons as exiles and your daughters as prisoners to Sihon, king of the Amorites.
30 Ma noi li abbiamo trafitti! E' rovinata Chesbon fino a Dibon. Abbiamo devastato fino a Nofach che è presso Madaba».
But now we have defeated the Amorites! Heshbon's rule has been destroyed all the way to Dibon. We wiped them out all the way to Nophah and on to Medeba.”
31 Israele si stabilì dunque nel paese degli Amorrei.
The Israelites occupied the country of the Amorites.
32 Poi Mosè mandò a esplorare Iazer e gli Israeliti presero le città del suo territorio e ne cacciarono gli Amorrei che vi si trovavano.
Moses sent men to explore Jazer. The Israelites conquered its surrounding villages and expelled the Amorites living there.
33 Poi mutarono direzione e salirono lungo la strada verso Basan. Og, re di Basan, uscì contro di loro con tutta la sua gente per dar loro battaglia a Edrei.
Then they continued on the road towards Bashan. Og, king of Bashan, led his whole army out to meet them head on, and fought them at Edrei.
34 Ma il Signore disse a Mosè: «Non lo temere, perché io te lo dò in potere, lui, tutta la sua gente e il suo paese; trattalo come hai trattato Sicon, re degli Amorrei, che abitava a Chesbon».
The Lord told Moses, “You don't need to be afraid of him, because I have handed him over to you, along with all his people and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who ruled from Heshbon.”
35 Gli Israeliti batterono lui, con i suoi figli e con tutto il suo popolo, così che non gli rimase più superstite alcuno, e si impadronirono del suo paese.
So they killed Og, his sons, and all his army. Nobody survived, and the Israelites took over his country.
