Neemia 13
1 In quel tempo si lesse in presenza del popolo il libro di Mosè e vi si trovò scritto che l'Ammonita e il Moabita non dovevano mai entrare nella comunità di Dio,
One day when the Book of Moses was being read to the people, the section was found where it was written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever be allowed into the assembly of God,
2 perché non erano venuti incontro agli Israeliti con il pane e l'acqua e perché avevano prezzolato contro di loro Balaam per maledirli, sebbene il nostro Dio avesse mutato la maledizione in benedizione.
because they hadn't brought food and water when they met the Israelites, but instead they had hired Balaam to put a curse on them—though our God turned that curse into a blessing!
3 Quando ebbero udito la legge, separarono da Israele tutto l'elemento straniero che vi si trovava mescolato.
When the people heard about this law, they separated out from Israel everyone who had foreign ancestry.
4 Prima di questo il sacerdote Eliasìb, che era preposto alle stanze della casa del nostro Dio ed era parente di Tobia,
Before all this, Eliashib the priest, who was related to Tobiah, had been put in charge of the storerooms of the Temple of our God.
5 aveva messo a disposizione di quest'ultimo una camera grande dove, prima di allora, si riponevano le offerte, l'incenso, gli arredi, la decima del grano, del vino e dell'olio, quanto spettava per legge ai leviti, ai cantori, ai portieri, e la parte che se ne prelevava per i sacerdoti.
He had provided Tobiah with a large room which had previously been used to store the grain offerings, incense, and Temple items, as well as the tithes of grain, new wine, and olive oil allocated to the Levites, singers, and gatekeepers, in addition to the offerings for the priests.
6 Quando si faceva tutto questo, io non ero a Gerusalemme, perché nell'anno trentaduesimo di Artaserse re di Babilonia ero tornato presso il re; ma dopo qualche tempo, ottenuta una licenza dal re,
When all this happened I was not in Jerusalem because I had returned to King Artaxerxes of Babylon in the thirty-second year of his reign. Some time later I requested permission from the king to go back.
7 tornai a Gerusalemme e mi accorsi del male che Eliasìb aveva fatto in favore di Tobia, mettendo a sua disposizione una stanza nei cortili del tempio.
When I arrived back in Jerusalem I discovered the dreadful thing Eliashib had done in providing Tobiah a room in the courtyard of God's Temple.
8 La cosa mi dispiacque molto e feci gettare fuori dalla stanza tutte le masserizie appartenenti a Tobia;
I was extremely upset, and I went and threw out everything that was in Tobiah's room.
9 poi ordinai che si purificassero quelle camere e vi feci ricollocare gli arredi del tempio, le offerte e l'incenso.
I ordered the rooms purified, and put back the Temple items, the grain offerings, and the incense.
10 Seppi anche che le porzioni dovute ai leviti non erano state date e che i leviti e i cantori, incaricati del servizio, erano fuggiti ognuno al suo paese.
I also found out that the food allowances for the Levites were not being provided, so the Levites had gone back to take care of their fields, along with the singers who led the worship services.
11 Allora rimproverai i magistrati e dissi loro: «Perché la casa di Dio è stata abbandonata?». Poi radunai i leviti e i cantori e li ristabilii nei loro uffici.
I went and confronted the leaders, asking, “Why is God's Temple being neglected?” I called the Levites back and made sure they were carrying out their responsibilities.
12 Allora tutto Giuda portò ai magazzini le decime del frumento, del vino e dell'olio;
Everyone in Judah then brought the tithes of grain, new wine, and olive oil into the storerooms.
13 affidai la sorveglianza dei magazzini al sacerdote Selemia, allo scriba Zadòk, e a Pedaia, uno dei leviti; ai quali aggiunsi Canan figlio di Zaccur, figlio di Mattania, perché erano reputati uomini fedeli. Il loro ufficio era di fare le ripartizioni tra i loro fratelli.
I put Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah, one of the Levites, in charge of the storerooms with Hanan, son of Zakkur, son of Mattaniah, to assist them, because they were considered honest people. Their responsibility was to distribute the allowances to their fellow Levites.
14 Ricordati per questo di me, Dio mio, e non cancellare le opere di pietà che ho fatte per la casa del mio Dio e per il suo servizio!
My God, please remember me over this. Please don't forget my good deeds I have done for the Temple of my God and its services.
15 In quei giorni osservai in Giuda alcuni che pigiavano nei tini in giorno di sabato, altri che trasportavano i covoni e li caricavano sugli asini, e anche vino, uva, fichi e ogni sorta di carichi, che introducevano a Gerusalemme in giorno di sabato; io protestai a causa del giorno in cui vendevano le derrate.
Around that time I noticed people treading the winepress on Sabbath. I saw others collecting grain and loading it up on donkeys, along with wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of burdens, and bringing it all into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day.
16 C'erano anche alcuni di Tiro stabiliti a Gerusalemme che importavano pesce e ogni sorta di merci e le vendevano ai figli di Giuda in giorno di sabato e in Gerusalemme.
I told them off for selling their produce on that day.
17 Allora io rimproverai i notabili di Giuda e dissi loro: «Che cosa è mai questo male che fate, profanando il giorno di sabato?
Some people from Tyre who lived in Jerusalem were bringing in fish and all kinds of things and they were selling them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah in Jerusalem.
18 I nostri padri non hanno fatto così? Il nostro Dio per questo ha fatto cadere su noi e su questa città tutti questi mali. Voi accrescete l'ira accesa contro Israele, profanando il sabato!».
I confronted the Jewish leaders, asking them, “Why are you are doing such an evil thing? You are violating the Sabbath day! Wasn't this what your forefathers did, bringing our God down on us, causing us and this city such disasters? Now you're bringing even more trouble on us by violating the Sabbath!”
19 Non appena le porte di Gerusalemme cominciarono a essere nell'ombra della sera, prima del sabato, io ordinai che le porte fossero chiuse e che non si riaprissero fino dopo il sabato; collocai alcuni miei servi alle porte, perché nessun carico entrasse in città durante il sabato.
So I ordered Jerusalem's gates to be shut at sunset on the day before the Sabbath, and that were not to be opened until after the Sabbath had ended. I assigned some of my men to guard the gates to make sure no goods would be brought in on the Sabbath day.
20 Così i mercanti e i venditori di ogni merce una o due volte passarono la notte fuori di Gerusalemme.
A couple of times merchants and sellers of all kinds of goods spent the night outside of Jerusalem.
21 Allora io protestai contro di loro e dissi: «Perché passate la notte davanti alle mura? Se lo farete un'altra volta, vi farò arrestare». Da quel momento non vennero più in giorno di sabato.
I warned them, saying, “Why are you spending the night by the wall? If you do that again I'll have you arrested!” After that they didn't come on the Sabbath.
22 Ordinai ai leviti che si purificassero e venissero a custodire le porte per santificare il giorno del sabato. Anche per questo ricordati di me, mio Dio, e abbi pietà di me secondo la tua grande misericordia!
Then I told the Levites to purify themselves and to come and guard the gates to keep the Sabbath day holy. My God, please also remember me for doing this, and be merciful to me because of your trustworthy love.
23 In quei giorni vidi anche che alcuni Giudei si erano ammogliati con donne di Asdòd, di Ammòn e di Moab;
Around the same time I realized some Jews had married women from Ashdod, Moab, and Ammon.
24 la metà dei loro figli parlava l'asdodeo, conosceva soltanto la lingua di questo o quest'altro popolo, non sapeva parlare giudaico.
Half their children could only speak the language of Ashdod or that of another people, and didn't know how to speak the language of Judah.
25 Io li rimproverai, li maledissi, ne picchiai alcuni, strappai loro i capelli e li feci giurare nel nome di Dio che non avrebbero dato le loro figlie ai figli di costoro e non avrebbero preso come mogli le figlie di quelli per i loro figli né per se stessi.
So I confronted them and told them they were cursed. I beat some of them and pulled out their hair. Then I made them take an oath before God, saying, “You must not allow your daughters to marry their sons, or allow your sons—or yourselves— to marry their daughters.
26 Dissi: «Salomone, re d'Israele, non ha forse peccato appunto in questo? Certo fra le molte nazioni non ci fu un re simile a lui; era amato dal suo Dio e Dio l'aveva fatto re di tutto Israele; eppure le donne straniere fecero peccare anche lui.
Wasn't it marriages like these that made King Solomon of Israel sin? There wasn't a king in any nation like him. God loved him, and God made him king over all Israel, but even he was made to sin by foreign women.
27 Si dovrà dunque dire di voi che commettete questo grande male, che siete infedeli al nostro Dio, prendendo mogli straniere?».
So do we have to hear about you committing this dreadful sin, how you are being unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women?”
28 Uno dei figli di Ioiadà figlio di Eliasìb, il sommo sacerdote, era genero di Sanballàt il Coronita; io lo cacciai via da me.
Even one of the sons of Jehoiada, son of Eliashib the high priest, had become a son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite. So I expelled him.
29 Ricordati di loro, mio Dio, poiché hanno profanato il sacerdozio e l'alleanza dei sacerdoti e dei leviti.
My God, remember them and what they did, violating the priesthood and the solemn agreement of the priests and Levites.
30 Così li purificai da ogni consuetudine straniera e ristabilii i servizi dei sacerdoti e dei leviti, assegnando a ciascuno il suo lavoro.
I purified them from everything foreign, and I made sure the priests and Levites were carrying out their assigned responsibilities.
31 Diedi anche disposizioni circa l'offerta della legna ai tempi stabiliti, e circa le primizie. Ricordati di me, mio Dio, per il mio bene!
I also arranged for wood to be supplied for the altar at the specified times, and for the first part of the produce to be donated. My God, remember me favorably.
