Giosué 5
1 Quando tutti i re degli Amorrei, che sono oltre il Giordano ad occidente, e tutti i re dei Cananei, che erano presso il mare, seppero che il Signore aveva prosciugato le acque del Giordano davanti agli Israeliti, finché furono passati, si sentirono venir meno il cuore e non ebbero più fiato davanti agli Israeliti.
When all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings of the Mediterranean coast heard how the Lord had dried up the waters of the River Jordan so that the Israelites could cross over, their courage melted and they no longer had any fighting spirit to face the Israelites.
2 In quel tempo il Signore disse a Giosuè: «Fatti coltelli di selce e circoncidi di nuovo gli Israeliti».
At that time the Lord told Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the new generation of Israelites.”
3 Giosuè si fece coltelli di selce e circoncise gli Israeliti alla collina Aralot.
Joshua had flint knives made and all male Israelites were circumcised at the place that became known as “the hill of foreskins.”
4 La ragione per cui Giosuè fece praticare la circoncisione è la seguente: tutto il popolo uscito dall'Egitto, i maschi, tutti gli uomini atti alla guerra, morirono nel deserto dopo l'uscita dall'Egitto;
This is the reason why Joshua had them all circumcised: all those who left Egypt—the men of fighting age—had died on the journey through the wilderness after the Exodus.
5 mentre tutto quel popolo che ne era uscito era circonciso, tutto il popolo nato nel deserto, dopo l'uscita dall'Egitto, non era circonciso.
They had all been circumcised when they left Egypt, but those born on the journey since then had not.
6 Quarant'anni infatti camminarono gli Israeliti nel deserto, finché fu estinta tutta la nazione, cioè gli uomini atti alla guerra usciti dall'Egitto, i quali non avevano ascoltato la voce del Signore e ai quali il Signore aveva giurato di non mostrare loro quella terra, dove scorre latte e miele, che il Signore aveva giurato ai padri di darci,
For forty years the Israelites traveled through the wilderness until all the men of fighting age when they left Egypt had died, because they had not done what the Lord had told them to do. So the Lord had vowed that he would not let them see the land he had promised their forefathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
7 ma al loro posto fece sorgere i loro figli e questi circoncise Giosuè; non erano infatti circoncisi perché non era stata fatta la circoncisione durante il viaggio.
The Lord replaced them with their children, and these were the ones that Joshua circumcised. They were uncircumcised since they hadn't been circumcised on the way.
8 Quando si terminò di circoncidere tutta la nazione, rimasero al loro posto nell'accampamento finché furono guariti.
Once they had all been circumcised, they stayed in the camp until they recovered.
9 Allora il Signore disse a Giosuè: «Oggi ho allontanato da voi l'infamia d'Egitto». Quel luogo si chiamò Gàlgala fino ad oggi.
The Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have removed from all of you the disgrace of Egypt.” So that place has been called Gilgal to this day.
10 Si accamparono dunque in Gàlgala gli Israeliti e celebrarono la pasqua al quattordici del mese, alla sera, nella steppa di Gerico.
The Israelites camped at Gilgal and celebrated Passover there on the evening of the fourteenth day of the first month.
11 Il giorno dopo la pasqua mangiarono i prodotti della regione, azzimi e frumento abbrustolito in quello stesso giorno.
From the very next day they began to eat produce from the land: unleavened bread and roasted grain.
12 La manna cessò il giorno dopo, come essi ebbero mangiato i prodotti della terra e non ci fu più manna per gli Israeliti; in quell'anno mangiarono i frutti della terra di Canaan.
On the same day when they began eating produce from the land there was no more manna. No longer did the Israelites have manna; after that they ate the produce of the land of Canaan.
13 Mentre Giosuè era presso Gerico, alzò gli occhi ed ecco, vide un uomo in piedi davanti a sé che aveva in mano una spada sguainata. Giosuè si diresse verso di lui e gli chiese: «Tu sei per noi o per i nostri avversari?».
One day when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or against us?” “Neither,” said the man. “I am the commander of the Lord's army. Now I'm here!”
14 Rispose: «No, io sono il capo dell'esercito del Signore. Giungo proprio ora». Allora Giosuè cadde con la faccia a terra, si prostrò e gli disse: «Che dice il mio signore al suo servo?».
Joshua fell down with his face to the ground in awe. Then he said, “What orders does my lord have for his servant?”
15 Rispose il capo dell'esercito del Signore a Giosuè: «Togliti i sandali dai tuoi piedi, perché il luogo sul quale tu stai è santo». Giosuè così fece.
The commander of the Lord's army told Joshua, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you're standing is holy ground.” Joshua did so.
