1 Puoi tu pescare il Leviatan con l'amo e tener ferma la sua lingua con una corda,
“Can you draw out Leviathan with a fish hook, or press down his tongue with a cord?
2 ficcargli un giunco nelle narici e forargli la mascella con un uncino?
Can you put a rope into his nose, or pierce his jaw through with a hook?
3 Ti farà forse molte suppliche e ti rivolgerà dolci parole?
Will he make many petitions to you, or will he speak soft words to you?
4 Stipulerà forse con te un'alleanza, perché tu lo prenda come servo per sempre?
Will he make a covenant with you, that you should take him for a servant forever?
5 Scherzerai con lui come un passero, legandolo per le tue fanciulle?
Will you play with him as with a bird? Or will you bind him for your girls?
6 Lo metteranno in vendita le compagnie di pesca, se lo divideranno i commercianti?
Will traders barter for him? Will they part him among the merchants?
7 Crivellerai di dardi la sua pelle e con la fiocina la sua testa?
Can you fill his skin with barbed irons, or his head with fish spears?
8 Metti su di lui la mano: al ricordo della lotta, non rimproverai!
Lay your hand on him. Remember the battle, and do so no more.
9 Ecco, la tua speranza è fallita, al solo vederlo uno stramazza.
Behold, the hope of him is in vain. Will not one be cast down even at the sight of him?
10 Nessuno è tanto audace da osare eccitarlo e chi mai potrà star saldo di fronte a lui?
None is so fierce that he dare stir him up. Who then is he who can stand before me?
11 Chi mai lo ha assalito e si è salvato? Nessuno sotto tutto il cielo.
Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Everything under the heavens is mine.
12 Non tacerò la forza delle sue membra: in fatto di forza non ha pari.
“I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, nor his mighty strength, nor his goodly frame.
13 Chi gli ha mai aperto sul davanti il manto di pelle e nella sua doppia corazza chi può penetrare?
Who can strip off his outer garment? Who will come within his jaws?
14 Le porte della sua bocca chi mai ha aperto? Intorno ai suoi denti è il terrore!
Who can open the doors of his face? Around his teeth is terror.
15 Il suo dorso è a lamine di scudi, saldate con stretto suggello;
Strong scales are his pride, shut up together with a close seal.
16 l'una con l'altra si toccano, sì che aria fra di esse non passa:
One is so near to another, that no air can come between them.
17 ognuna aderisce alla vicina, sono compatte e non possono separarsi.
They are joined to one another. They stick together, so that they cannot be pulled apart.
18 Il suo starnuto irradia luce e i suoi occhi sono come le palpebre dell'aurora.
His sneezing flashes out light. His eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.
19 Dalla sua bocca partono vampate, sprizzano scintille di fuoco.
Out of his mouth go burning torches. Sparks of fire leap out.
20 Dalle sue narici esce fumo come da caldaia, che bolle sul fuoco.
Out of his nostrils a smoke goes, as of a boiling pot over a fire of reeds.
21 Il suo fiato incendia carboni e dalla bocca gli escono fiamme.
His breath kindles coals. A flame goes out of his mouth.
22 Nel suo collo risiede la forza e innanzi a lui corre la paura.
There is strength in his neck. Terror dances before him.
23 Le giogaie della sua carne son ben compatte, sono ben salde su di lui, non si muovono.
The flakes of his flesh are joined together. They are firm on him. They cannot be moved.
24 Il suo cuore è duro come pietra, duro come la pietra inferiore della macina.
His heart is as firm as a stone, yes, firm as the lower millstone.
25 Quando si alza, si spaventano i forti e per il terrore restano smarriti.
When he raises himself up, the mighty are afraid. They retreat before his thrashing.
26 La spada che lo raggiunge non vi si infigge, né lancia, né freccia né giavellotto;
If one attacks him with the sword, it cannot prevail; nor the spear, the dart, nor the pointed shaft.
27 stima il ferro come paglia, il bronzo come legno tarlato.
He counts iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood.
28 Non lo mette in fuga la freccia, in pula si cambian per lui le pietre della fionda.
The arrow cannot make him flee. Sling stones are like chaff to him.
29 Come stoppia stima una mazza e si fa beffe del vibrare dell'asta.
Clubs are counted as stubble. He laughs at the rushing of the javelin.
30 Al disotto ha cocci acuti e striscia come erpice sul molle terreno.
His undersides are like sharp potsherds, leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge.
31 Fa ribollire come pentola il gorgo, fa del mare come un vaso da unguenti.
He makes the deep to boil like a pot. He makes the sea like a pot of ointment.
32 Dietro a sé produce una bianca scia e l'abisso appare canuto.
He makes a path shine after him. One would think the deep had white hair.
33 Nessuno sulla terra è pari a lui, fatto per non aver paura.
On earth there is not his equal, that is made without fear.
34 Lo teme ogni essere più altero; egli è il re su tutte le fiere più superbe.
He sees everything that is high. He is king over all the sons of pride.”
