Giobbe 4
1 Elifaz il Temanita prese la parola e disse:
And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
2 Se si tenta di parlarti, ti sarà forse gravoso? Ma chi può trattenere il discorso?
If a word were essayed to thee, wouldest thou be grieved? But who can refrain from speaking?
3 Ecco, tu hai istruito molti e a mani fiacche hai ridato vigore;
Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands;
4 le tue parole hanno sorretto chi vacillava e le ginocchia che si piegavano hai rafforzato.
Thy words have upholden him that was stumbling, and thou hast braced up the bending knees:
5 Ma ora questo accade a te e ti abbatti; capita a te e ne sei sconvolto.
But now it is come upon thee, and thou grievest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.
6 La tua pietà non era forse la tua fiducia e la tua condotta integra, la tua speranza?
Hath not thy piety been thy confidence, and the perfection of thy ways thy hope?
7 Ricordalo: quale innocente è mai perito e quando mai furon distrutti gli uomini retti?
Remember, I pray thee, who that was innocent has perished? and where were the upright cut off?
8 Per quanto io ho visto, chi coltiva iniquità, chi semina affanni, li raccoglie.
Even as I have seen, they that plough iniquity and sow mischief, reap the same.
9 A un soffio di Dio periscono e dallo sfogo della sua ira sono annientati.
By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his nostrils are they consumed.
10 Il ruggito del leone e l'urlo del leopardo e i denti dei leoncelli sono frantumati.
The roar of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken;
11 Il leone è perito per mancanza di preda e i figli della leonessa sono stati dispersi.
The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness are scattered.
12 A me fu recata, furtiva, una parola e il mio orecchio ne percepì il lieve sussurro.
Now to me a word was secretly brought, and mine ear received a whisper thereof.
13 Nei fantasmi, tra visioni notturne, quando grava sugli uomini il sonno,
In thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men: —
14 terrore mi prese e spavento e tutte le ossa mi fece tremare;
Fear came on me, and trembling, and made all my bones to shake;
15 un vento mi passò sulla faccia, e il pelo si drizzò sulla mia carne...
And a spirit passed before my face — the hair of my flesh stood up —
16 Stava là ritto uno, di cui non riconobbi l'aspetto, un fantasma stava davanti ai miei occhi... Un sussurro..., e una voce mi si fece sentire:
It stood still; I could not discern the appearance thereof: a form was before mine eyes; I heard a slight murmur and a voice:
17 «Può il mortale essere giusto davanti a Dio o innocente l'uomo davanti al suo creatore?
Shall [mortal] man be more just than God? Shall a man be purer than his Maker?
18 Ecco, dei suoi servi egli non si fida e ai suoi angeli imputa difetti;
Lo, he trusteth not his servants, and his angels he chargeth with folly:
19 quanto più a chi abita case di fango, che nella polvere hanno il loro fondamento! Come tarlo sono schiacciati,
How much more them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed as the moth!
20 annientati fra il mattino e la sera: senza che nessuno ci badi, periscono per sempre.
From morning to evening are they smitten: without any heeding it, they perish for ever.
21 La funicella della loro tenda non viene forse strappata? Muoiono senza saggezza!».
Is not their tent-cord torn away in them? they die, and without wisdom.
