Giobbe 34

1 Eliu continuò a dire:

And Elius continued, and said,

2 Ascoltate, saggi, le mie parole e voi, sapienti, porgetemi l'orecchio,

Hear me, ye wise men; hearken, ye that have knowledge.

3 Perché l'orecchio distingue le parole, come il palato assapora i cibi.

For the ear tries words, and the mouth tastes meat.

4 Esploriamo noi ciò che è giusto, indaghiamo fra di noi quale sia il bene:

Let us choose judgment to ourselves: let us know amount ourselves what is right.

5 poiché Giobbe ha detto: «Io son giusto, ma Dio mi ha tolto il mio diritto;

For Job has said, I am righteous: the Lord has removed my judgment.

6 contro il mio diritto passo per menzognero, inguaribile è la mia piaga benché senza colpa».

And he has erred in my judgment: my wound is severe without unrighteousness [of mine].

7 Chi è come Giobbe che beve, come l'acqua, l'insulto,

What man is as Job, drinking scorning like water?

8 che fa la strada in compagnia dei malfattori, andando con uomini iniqui?

[saying], I have not sinned, nor committed ungodliness, nor had fellowship with workers of iniquity, to go with the ungodly.

9 Poiché egli ha detto: «Non giova all'uomo essere in buona grazia con Dio».

For thou shouldest not say, There shall be no visitation of a man, whereas [there is] a visitation on him from the Lord.

10 Perciò ascoltatemi, uomini di senno: lungi da Dio l'iniquità e dall'Onnipotente l'ingiustizia!

Wherefore hear me, ye that are wise in heart: far be it from me to sin before the Lord, and to pervert righteousness before the almighty.

11 Poiché egli ripaga l'uomo secondo il suo operato e fa trovare ad ognuno secondo la sua condotta.

Yea, he renders to a man accordingly as each of them does, and in a man's path he will find him.

12 In verità, Dio non agisce da ingiusto e l'Onnipotente non sovverte il diritto!

And thinkest thou that the Lord will do wrong, or will the Almighty who made the earth wrest judgment?

13 Chi mai gli ha affidato la terra e chi ha disposto il mondo intero?

And who is he that made [the whole world] under heaven, and all things therein?

14 Se egli richiamasse il suo spirito a sè e a sé ritraesse il suo soffio,

For if he would confine, and restrain his spirit with himself;

15 ogni carne morirebbe all'istante e l'uomo ritornerebbe in polvere.

all flesh would die together, and every mortal would return to the earth, whence also he was formed.

16 Se hai intelletto, ascolta bene questo, porgi l'orecchio al suono delle mie parole.

Take heed lest he rebuke [thee]: hear this, hearken to the voice of words.

17 Può mai governare chi odia il diritto? E tu osi condannare il Gran Giusto?

Behold then the one that hates iniquities, and that destroys the wicked, who is for ever just.

18 lui che dice ad un re: «Iniquo!» e ai principi: «Malvagi!»,

[He is] ungodly that says to a king, Thou art a transgressor, [that says] to princes, O most ungodly one.

19 lui che non usa parzialità con i potenti e non preferisce al povero il ricco, perché tutti costoro sono opera delle sue mani?

[Such a one] as would not reverence the face of an honourable man, neither knows how to give honour to the great, so as that their persons should be respected.

20 In un istante muoiono e nel cuore della notte sono colpiti i potenti e periscono; e senza sforzo rimuove i tiranni,

But it shall turn out vanity to them, to cry and beseech a man; for they dealt unlawfully, the poor being turned aside [from their right].

21 poiché egli tiene gli occhi sulla condotta dell'uomo e vede tutti i suoi passi.

For he surveys the works of men, and nothing of what they do has escaped him.

22 Non vi è tenebra, non densa oscurità, dove possano nascondersi i malfattori.

Neither shall there be a place for the workers of iniquity to hide themselves.

23 Poiché non si pone all'uomo un termine per comparire davanti a Dio in giudizio:

For he will not lay upon a man more [than right].

24 egli fiacca i potenti, senza fare inchieste, e colloca altri al loro posto.

For the Lord looks down upon all men, who comprehends unsearchable things, glorious also and excellent things without number.

25 Poiché conosce le loro opere, li travolge nella notte e sono schiacciati;

Who discovers their works, and will bring night about [upon them], and they shall be brought low.

26 come malvagi li percuote, li colpisce alla vista di tutti;

And he quite destroys the ungodly, for they are seen before him.

27 perché si sono allontanati da lui e di tutte le sue vie non si sono curati,

Because they turned aside from the law of God, and did not regard his ordinances,

28 sì da far giungere fino a lui il grido dell'oppresso e fargli udire il lamento dei poveri.

so as to bring before him the cry of the needy; for he will hear the cry of the poor.

29 Se egli tace, chi lo può condannare? Se vela la faccia, chi lo può vedere? Ma sulle nazioni e sugli individui egli veglia,

And he will give quiet, and who will condemn? and he will hide his face, and who shall see him? whether [it be done] against a nation, or against a man also:

30 perché non regni un uomo perverso, perché il popolo non abbia inciampi.

causing a hypocrite to be king, because of the waywardness of the people.

31 Si può dunque dire a Dio: «Porto la pena, senza aver fatto il male;

For [there is] one that says to the Mighty One, I have received [blessings]; I will not take a pledge:

32 se ho peccato, mostramelo; se ho commesso l'iniquità, non lo farò più»?

I will see apart from myself: do thou shew me if I have done unrighteousness; I will not do [so] any more.

33 Forse, secondo le tue idee dovrebbe ricompensare, perché tu rifiuti il suo giudizio? Poiché tu devi scegliere, non io, dì, dunque, quello che sai.

Will he take vengeance for it on thee, whereas thou wilt put [it] far [from thee]? for thou shalt choose, and not I; and what thou knowest, speak thou.

34 Gli uomini di senno mi diranno con l'uomo saggio che mi ascolta:

Because the wise in heart shall say this, and a wise man listens to my word.

35 «Giobbe non parla con sapienza e le sue parole sono prive di senno».

But Job has not spoken with understanding, his words are not [uttered] with knowledge.

36 Bene, Giobbe sia esaminato fino in fondo, per le sue risposte da uomo empio,

Howbeit do thou learn, Job: no longer make answer as the foolish:

37 perché aggiunge al suo peccato la rivolta, in mezzo a noi batte le mani e moltiplica le parole contro Dio.

that we add not to our sins: for iniquity will be reckoned against us, if [we] speak many words before the Lord.
