Giobbe 15
1 Elifaz il Temanita prese a dire:
Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said:
2 Potrebbe il saggio rispondere con ragioni campate in aria e riempirsi il ventre di vento d'oriente?
Should a wise man answer with arguments of wind, Or fill his bosom with the east wind?
3 Si difende egli con parole senza costrutto e con discorsi inutili?
Should he argue with speech that helpeth him not, And with words which do not profit him?
4 Tu anzi distruggi la religione e abolisci la preghiera innanzi a Dio.
Behold, thou makest the fear of God a vain thing, And discouragest prayer before him.
5 Sì, la tua malizia suggerisce alla tua bocca e scegli il linguaggio degli astuti.
Yea, thy own mouth proclaimeth thy iniquity, Though thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
6 Non io, ma la tua bocca ti condanna e le tue labbra attestano contro di te.
Thy own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; Thy own lips testify against thee.
7 Sei forse tu il primo uomo che è nato, o, prima dei monti, sei venuto al mondo?
Art thou the first man that was born? Wast thou formed before the hills?
8 Hai avuto accesso ai segreti consigli di Dio e ti sei appropriata tu solo la sapienza?
Hast thou listened in the council of God, And drawn all wisdom to thyself?
9 Che cosa sai tu che noi non sappiamo? Che cosa capisci che da noi non si comprenda?
What dost thou know, that we know not also? What dost thou understand, that is a secret to us?
10 Anche fra di noi c'è il vecchio e c'è il canuto più di tuo padre, carico d'anni.
With us are the aged and hoary-headed; Much older than thy father.
11 Poca cosa sono per te le consolazioni di Dio e una parola moderata a te rivolta?
Dost thou despise the consolations of God, And words so full of kindness to thee?
12 Perché il tuo cuore ti trasporta e perché fanno cenni i tuoi occhi,
Why hath thy passion taken possession of thee? And why this winking of thine eyes?
13 quando volgi contro Dio il tuo animo e fai uscire tali parole dalla tua bocca?
For against God hast thou turned thy spirit, And uttered such words from thy mouth.
14 Che cos'è l'uomo perché si ritenga puro, perché si dica giusto un nato di donna?
What is man, that he should be pure, And he that is born of woman, that he should be innocent?
15 Ecco, neppure dei suoi santi egli ha fiducia e i cieli non sono puri ai suoi occhi;
Behold, He putteth no trust in his ministering spirits, And the heavens are not pure in his sight;
16 quanto meno un essere abominevole e corrotto, l'uomo, che beve l'iniquità come acqua.
Much less, abominable and polluted man, Who drinketh iniquity as water.
17 Voglio spiegartelo, ascoltami, ti racconterò quel che ho visto,
Hear me, and I will show thee, And that which I have seen will I declare;
18 quello che i saggi riferiscono, non celato ad essi dai loro padri;
Which the wise men have told, And not kept concealed, as received from their fathers;
19 a essi soli fu concessa questa terra, né straniero alcuno era passato in mezzo a loro.
To whom alone the land was given, And among whom not a stranger wandered.
20 Per tutti i giorni della vita il malvagio si tormenta; sono contati gli anni riservati al violento.
“All his days the wicked man is in pain; Yea, all the years, that are laid up for the oppressor.
21 Voci di spavento gli risuonano agli orecchi e in piena pace si vede assalito dal predone.
A fearful sound is in his ears; In peace the destroyer cometh upon him.
22 Non crede di potersi sottrarre alle tenebre, egli si sente destinato alla spada.
He hath no hope that he shall escape from darkness; He is set apart for the sword.
23 Destinato in pasto agli avvoltoi, sa che gli è preparata la rovina.
He wandereth about, seeking bread; He knoweth that a day of darkness is at hand.
24 Un giorno tenebroso lo spaventa, la miseria e l'angoscia l'assalgono come un re pronto all'attacco,
Distress and anguish fill him with dread; They prevail against him like a king ready for the battle.
25 perché ha steso contro Dio la sua mano, ha osato farsi forte contro l'Onnipotente;
Because he stretched forth his hand against God, And bade defiance to the Almighty,
26 correva contro di lui a testa alta, al riparo del curvo spessore del suo scudo;
And ran against him with outstretched neck, With the thick bosses of his bucklers;
27 poiché aveva la faccia coperta di grasso e pinguedine intorno ai suoi fianchi.
Because he covered his face with fatness, And gathered fat upon his loins,
28 Avrà dimora in città diroccate, in case dove non si abita più, destinate a diventare macerie.
And dwelt in desolated cities, In houses which no man inhabiteth, That are ready to become heaps.
29 Non arricchirà, non durerà la sua fortuna, non metterà radici sulla terra.
He shall not be rich; his substance shall not endure, And his possessions shall not be extended upon the earth.
30 Alle tenebre non sfuggirà, la vampa seccherà i suoi germogli e dal vento sarà involato il suo frutto.
He shall not escape from darkness, And the flame shall dry up his branches; Yea, by the breath of His mouth shall he be taken away.
31 Non confidi in una vanità fallace, perché sarà una rovina.
“Let not man trust in vanity! he will be deceived; For vanity shall be his recompense.
32 La sua fronda sarà tagliata prima del tempo e i suoi rami non rinverdiranno più.
He shall come to his end before his time, And his branch shall not be green.
33 Sarà spogliato come vigna della sua uva ancor acerba e getterà via come ulivo i suoi fiori,
He shall shake off his unripe fruit like the vine, And shed his blossoms like the olive-tree.
34 poiché la stirpe dell'empio è sterile e il fuoco divora le tende dell'uomo venale.
The house of the unrighteous shall be famished, And fire shall consume the tents of bribery.
35 Concepisce malizia e genera sventura e nel suo seno alleva delusione.
They conceive mischief, and bring forth misery, And their breast deviseth deceit.”
