Genesi 39
1 Giuseppe era stato condotto in Egitto e Potifar, consigliere del faraone e comandante delle guardie, un Egiziano, lo acquistò da quegli Ismaeliti che l'avevano condotto laggiù.
And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guards, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmaelites, who had brought him down thither.
2 Allora il Signore fu con Giuseppe: a lui tutto riusciva bene e rimase nella casa dell'Egiziano, suo padrone.
And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was thus in the house of his master the Egyptian.
3 Il suo padrone si accorse che il Signore era con lui e che quanto egli intraprendeva il Signore faceva riuscire nelle sue mani.
And when his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord caused all that he did to prosper in his hand:
4 Così Giuseppe trovò grazia agli occhi di lui e divenne suo servitore personale; anzi quegli lo nominò suo maggiordomo e gli diede in mano tutti i suoi averi.
Joseph found grace in his eyes, and he served him; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
5 Da quando egli lo aveva fatto suo maggiordomo e incaricato di tutti i suoi averi, il Signore benedisse la casa dell'Egiziano per causa di Giuseppe e la benedizione del Signore fu su quanto aveva, in casa e nella campagna.
And it came to pass from the time he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house for the sake of Joseph; and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had, in the house and in the field.
6 Così egli lasciò tutti i suoi averi nelle mani di Giuseppe e non gli domandava conto di nulla, se non del cibo che mangiava. Ora Giuseppe era bello di forma e avvenente di aspetto.
And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he troubled himself not about aught he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was handsome in form and handsome in appearance.
7 Dopo questi fatti, la moglie del padrone gettò gli occhi su Giuseppe e gli disse: «Unisciti a me!».
And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.
8 Ma egli rifiutò e disse alla moglie del suo padrone: «Vedi, il mio signore non mi domanda conto di quanto è nella sua casa e mi ha dato in mano tutti i suoi averi.
But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, Thy master troubleth himself not about what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath into my hand;
9 Lui stesso non conta più di me in questa casa; non mi ha proibito nulla, se non te, perché sei sua moglie. E come potrei fare questo grande male e peccare contro Dio?».
There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great evil, and sin against God?
10 E, benché ogni giorno essa ne parlasse a Giuseppe, egli non acconsentì di unirsi, di darsi a lei.
And it came to pass, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, and he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her;
11 Ora un giorno egli entrò in casa per fare il suo lavoro, mentre non c'era nessuno dei domestici.
That it came to pass one particular day, that he went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.
12 Essa lo afferrò per la veste, dicendo: «Unisciti a me!». Ma egli le lasciò tra le mani la veste, fuggì e uscì.
And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me; and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and ran out into the street.
13 Allora essa, vedendo ch'egli le aveva lasciato tra le mani la veste ed era fuggito fuori,
And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,
14 chiamò i suoi domestici e disse loro: «Guardate, ci ha condotto in casa un Ebreo per scherzare con noi! Mi si è accostato per unirsi a me, ma io ho gridato a gran voce.
That she called unto the men of her house, and spoke unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in unto us a Hebrew man to have his sport with us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:
15 Egli, appena ha sentito che alzavo la voce e chiamavo, ha lasciato la veste accanto a me, è fuggito ed è uscito».
And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and ran out into the street.
16 Ed essa pose accanto a sé la veste di lui finché il padrone venne a casa.
And she laid up his garment by her until his lord came home.
17 Allora gli disse le stesse cose: «Quel servo ebreo, che tu ci hai condotto in casa, mi si è accostato per scherzare con me.
And she spoke unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant whom thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to have his sport with me.
18 Ma appena io ho gridato e ho chiamato, ha abbandonato la veste presso di me ed è fuggito fuori».
And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled forth.
19 Quando il padrone udì le parole di sua moglie che gli parlava: «Proprio così mi ha fatto il tuo servo!», si accese d'ira.
And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke unto him, saying, After this manner hath thy servant done to me; that his wrath was kindled.
20 Il padrone di Giuseppe lo prese e lo mise nella prigione, dove erano detenuti i carcerati del re. Così egli rimase là in prigione.
And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king's prisoners were imprisoned: and he was there in the prison.
21 Ma il Signore fu con Giuseppe, gli conciliò benevolenza e gli fece trovare grazia agli occhi del comandante della prigione.
But the Lord was with Joseph, and caused him to find kindness, and gave him favor in the eyes of the superintendent of the prison.
22 Così il comandante della prigione affidò a Giuseppe tutti i carcerati che erano nella prigione e quanto c'era da fare là dentro, lo faceva lui.
And the superintendent of the prison committed into Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, was done through him.
23 Il comandante della prigione non si prendeva cura più di nulla di quanto gli era affidato, perché il Signore era con lui e quello che egli faceva il Signore faceva riuscire.
The superintendent of the prison looked not after the least that was under his hand, because the Lord was with him; and that which he did, the Lord made to prosper.
