Genesi 37
1 Giacobbe si stabilì nel paese dove suo padre era stato forestiero, nel paese di Canaan.
Jacob [Supplanter] lived in the land of his father’s travels, in the land of Canaan [Humbled].
2 Questa è la storia della discendenza di Giacobbe. Giuseppe all'età di diciassette anni pascolava il gregge con i fratelli. Egli era giovane e stava con i figli di Bila e i figli di Zilpa, mogli di suo padre. Ora Giuseppe riferì al loro padre i pettegolezzi sul loro conto.
This is the history of the generations of Jacob [Supplanter]. Joseph [May he add], being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah [Bashful] and Zilpah [Frailty], his father’s wives. Joseph [May he add] brought an evil report of them to their father.
3 Israele amava Giuseppe più di tutti i suoi figli, perché era il figlio avuto in vecchiaia, e gli aveva fatto una tunica dalle lunghe maniche.
Now Israel [God prevails] 'ahav ·affectionately loved· Joseph [May he add] more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a coat of many colors.
4 I suoi fratelli, vedendo che il loro padre amava lui più di tutti i suoi figli, lo odiavano e non potevano parlargli amichevolmente.
His brothers saw that their father 'ahav ·affectionately loved· him more than all his brothers, and they hated him, and couldn’t speak peaceably to him.
5 Ora Giuseppe fece un sogno e lo raccontò ai fratelli, che lo odiarono ancor di più.
Joseph [May he add] dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him all the more.
6 Disse dunque loro: «Ascoltate questo sogno che ho fatto.
He said to them, “Please sh'ma ·hear obey· this dream which I have dreamed:
7 Noi stavamo legando covoni in mezzo alla campagna, quand'ecco il mio covone si alzò e restò diritto e i vostri covoni vennero intorno e si prostrarono davanti al mio».
for behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and behold, your sheaves came around, and bowed down to my sheaf.”
8 Gli dissero i suoi fratelli: «Vorrai forse regnare su di noi o ci vorrai dominare?». Lo odiarono ancora di più a causa dei suoi sogni e delle sue parole.
His brothers said to him, “Will you indeed reign over us? Or will you indeed have dominion over us?” They hated him all the more for his dreams and for his words.
9 Egli fece ancora un altro sogno e lo narrò al padre e ai fratelli e disse: «Ho fatto ancora un sogno, sentite: il sole, la luna e undici stelle si prostravano davanti a me».
He dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, “Behold, I have dreamed yet another dream: and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me.”
10 Lo narrò dunque al padre e ai fratelli e il padre lo rimproverò e gli disse: «Che sogno è questo che hai fatto! Dovremo forse venire io e tua madre e i tuoi fratelli a prostrarci fino a terra davanti a te?».
He told it to his father and to his brothers. His father rebuked him, and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Will I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves down to you to the earth?”
11 I suoi fratelli perciò erano invidiosi di lui, ma suo padre tenne in mente la cosa.
His brothers envied him, but his father kept this saying in mind.
12 I suoi fratelli andarono a pascolare il gregge del loro padre a Sichem.
His brothers went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem.
13 Israele disse a Giuseppe: «Sai che i tuoi fratelli sono al pascolo a Sichem? Vieni, ti voglio mandare da loro». Gli rispose: «Eccomi!».
Israel [God prevails] said to Joseph [May he add], “Are not your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them.” He said to him, “Here I am.”
14 Gli disse: «Và a vedere come stanno i tuoi fratelli e come sta il bestiame, poi torna a riferirmi». Lo fece dunque partire dalla valle di Ebron ed egli arrivò a Sichem.
He said to him, “Go now, see whether it is well with your brothers, and well with the flock; and bring me word again.” So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
15 Mentr'egli andava errando per la campagna, lo trovò un uomo, che gli domandò: «Che cerchi?».
A certain man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the field. The man asked him, “What are you looking for?”
16 Rispose: «Cerco i miei fratelli. Indicami dove si trovano a pascolare».
He said, “I am looking for my brothers. Tell me, please, where they are feeding the flock.”
17 Quell'uomo disse: «Hanno tolto le tende di qui, infatti li ho sentiti dire: Andiamo a Dotan». Allora Giuseppe andò in cerca dei suoi fratelli e li trovò a Dotan.
The man said, “They have left here, for I sh'ma ·heard obeyed· them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’” Joseph [May he add] went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan.
18 Essi lo videro da lontano e, prima che giungesse vicino a loro, complottarono di farlo morire.
They saw him afar off, and before he came near to them, they conspired against him to kill him.
19 Si dissero l'un l'altro: «Ecco, il sognatore arriva!
They said to one another, “Behold, this dreamer comes.
20 Orsù, uccidiamolo e gettiamolo in qualche cisterna! Poi diremo: Una bestia feroce l'ha divorato! Così vedremo che ne sarà dei suoi sogni!».
Come now therefore, and let’s kill him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, ‘An evil animal has devoured him.’ We will see what will become of his dreams.”
21 Ma Ruben sentì e volle salvarlo dalle loro mani, dicendo: «Non togliamogli la vita».
Reuben [See, a son!] sh'ma ·heard obeyed· it, and delivered him out of their hand, and said, “Let’s not take his life.”
22 Poi disse loro: «Non versate il sangue, gettatelo in questa cisterna che è nel deserto, ma non colpitelo con la vostra mano»; egli intendeva salvarlo dalle loro mani e ricondurlo a suo padre.
Reuben [See, a son!] said to them, “Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand on him”— that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father.
23 Quando Giuseppe fu arrivato presso i suoi fratelli, essi lo spogliarono della sua tunica, quella tunica dalle lunghe maniche ch'egli indossava,
When Joseph [May he add] came to his brothers, they stripped Joseph [May he add] of his coat, the coat of many colors that was on him;
24 poi lo afferrarono e lo gettarono nella cisterna: era una cisterna vuota, senz'acqua.
and they took him, and threw him into the pit. The pit was empty. There was no water in it.
25 Poi sedettero per prendere cibo. Quando ecco, alzando gli occhi, videro arrivare una carovana di Ismaeliti provenienti da Galaad, con i cammelli carichi di resina, di balsamo e di laudano, che andavano a portare in Egitto.
They sat down to eat bread, and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites [Pays attention God] was coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing spices and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt [Abode of slavery].
26 Allora Giuda disse ai fratelli: «Che guadagno c'è ad uccidere il nostro fratello e a nasconderne il sangue?
Judah [Praised] said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?
27 Su, vendiamolo agli Ismaeliti e la nostra mano non sia contro di lui, perché è nostro fratello e nostra carne». I suoi fratelli lo ascoltarono.
Come, and let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites [Pays attention God], and not let our hand be on him; for he is our brother, our flesh.” His brothers sh'ma ·heard obeyed· him.
28 Passarono alcuni mercanti madianiti; essi tirarono su ed estrassero Giuseppe dalla cisterna e per venti sicli d'argento vendettero Giuseppe agli Ismaeliti. Così Giuseppe fu condotto in Egitto.
Midianites [Descendants of Strife] who were merchants passed by, and they drew and lifted up Joseph [May he add] out of the pit, and sold Joseph [May he add] to the Ishmaelites [Pays attention God] for twenty pieces of silver. They brought Joseph [May he add] into Egypt [Abode of slavery].
29 Quando Ruben ritornò alla cisterna, ecco Giuseppe non c'era più. Allora si stracciò le vesti,
Reuben [See, a son!] returned to the pit; and saw that Joseph [May he add] was not in the pit; and he tore his clothes.
30 tornò dai suoi fratelli e disse: «Il ragazzo non c'è più, dove andrò io?».
He teshuvah ·completely returned· to his brothers, and said, “The child is no more; and I, where will I go?”
31 Presero allora la tunica di Giuseppe, scannarono un capro e intinsero la tunica nel sangue.
They took Joseph [May he add]’s coat, and killed a male goat, and dipped the coat in the blood.
32 Poi mandarono al padre la tunica dalle lunghe maniche e gliela fecero pervenire con queste parole: «L'abbiamo trovata; riscontra se è o no la tunica di tuo figlio».
They took the coat of many colors, and they brought it to their father, and said, “We have found this. Examine it, now, whether it is your son’s coat or not.”
33 Egli la riconobbe e disse: «E' la tunica di mio figlio! Una bestia feroce l'ha divorato. Giuseppe è stato sbranato».
He recognized it, and said, “It is my son’s coat. An evil animal has devoured him. Joseph [May he add] is without doubt torn in pieces.”
34 Giacobbe si stracciò le vesti, si pose un cilicio attorno ai fianchi e fece lutto sul figlio per molti giorni.
Jacob [Supplanter] tore his clothes, and put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days.
35 Tutti i suoi figli e le sue figlie vennero a consolarlo, ma egli non volle essere consolato dicendo: «No, io voglio scendere in lutto dal figlio mio nella tomba». E il padre suo lo pianse. (Sheol h7585)
All his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. He said, “For I will go down to Sheol ·Place of the dead· to my son mourning.” His father wept for him. (Sheol h7585)
36 Intanto i Madianiti lo vendettero in Egitto a Potifar, consigliere del faraone e comandante delle guardie.
The Midianites [Descendants of Strife] sold him into Egypt [Abode of slavery] to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, the captain of the guard.
