Genesi 32
1 Mentre Giacobbe continuava il viaggio, gli si fecero incontro gli angeli di Dio.
But Iacob went forth on his iourney. And the angells of God came and mett him.
2 Giacobbe al vederli disse: «Questo è l'accampamento di Dio» e chiamò quel luogo Macanaim.
And when Iacob sawe them he sayde: this is godes hoost: and called the name of that same place Mahanaim.
3 Poi Giacobbe mandò avanti a sé alcuni messaggeri al fratello Esaù, nel paese di Seir, la campagna di Edom.
Iacob sente meessengers before him to Esau his brother vnto the lande of Seir and the felde of Edom.
4 Diede loro questo comando: «Direte al mio signore Esaù: Dice il tuo servo Giacobbe: Sono stato forestiero presso Làbano e vi sono restato fino ad ora.
And he comaunded them saynge: se that ye speake after this maner to my lorde Esau: thy seruaunte Iacob sayth thus. I haue sogerned ad bene a straunger with Laban vnto this tyme:
5 Sono venuto in possesso di buoi, asini e greggi, di schiavi e schiave. Ho mandato ad informarne il mio signore, per trovare grazia ai suoi occhi».
and haue gotten oxen asses and shepe menservauntes and wemanseruauntes and haue sent to shewe it mi lorde that I may fynde grace in thy syghte.
6 I messaggeri tornarono da Giacobbe, dicendo: «Siamo stati da tuo fratello Esaù; ora egli stesso sta venendoti incontro e ha con sé quattrocento uomini».
And the messengers came agayne to Iacob sainge: we came vnto thi brother Esau and he cometh ageynst the and. iiij. hundred men with hi.
7 Giacobbe si spaventò molto e si sentì angosciato; allora divise in due accampamenti la gente che era con lui, il gregge, gli armenti e i cammelli.
Than was Iacob greatlye afrayde and wist not which waye to turne him selfe and devyded the people that was with him and the shepe oxen and camels in to. ij. companies
8 Pensò infatti: «Se Esaù raggiunge un accampamento e lo batte, l'altro accampamento si salverà».
and sayde: Yf Esau come to the one parte and smyte it the other may saue it selfe.
9 Poi Giacobbe disse: «Dio del mio padre Abramo e Dio del mio padre Isacco, Signore, che mi hai detto: Ritorna al tuo paese, nella tua patria e io ti farò del bene,
And Iacob sayde: O god of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac: LORde which saydest vnto me returne vnto thy cuntre and to thy kynrede and I will deall wel with the.
10 io sono indegno di tutta la benevolenza e di tutta la fedeltà che hai usato verso il tuo servo. Con il mio bastone soltanto avevo passato questo Giordano e ora sono divenuto tale da formare due accampamenti.
I am not worthy of the leaste of all the mercyes and treuth which thou hast shewed vnto thy seruaunte. For with my staf came I over this Iordane and now haue Igoten. ij. droves
11 Salvami dalla mano del mio fratello Esaù, perché io ho paura di lui: egli non arrivi e colpisca me e tutti, madre e bambini!
Delyver me from the handes of my brother Esau for I feare him: lest he will come and smyte the mother with the childeru.
12 Eppure tu hai detto: Ti farò del bene e renderò la tua discendenza come la sabbia del mare, tanto numerosa che non si può contare».
Thou saydest that thou woldest surely do me good and woldest make mi seed as the sonde of the see which can not be nombred for multitude.
13 Giacobbe rimase in quel luogo a passare la notte. Poi prese, di ciò che gli capitava tra mano, di che fare un dono al fratello Esaù:
And he taried there that same nyghte and toke of that which came to hande a preasent vnto Esau his brother:
14 duecento capre e venti capri, duecento pecore e venti montoni,
ij hundred she gootes ad xx he gootes: ij hundred shepe and xx rammes:
15 trenta cammelle allattanti con i loro piccoli, quaranta giovenche e dieci torelli, venti asine e dieci asinelli.
thyrtye mylch camels with their coltes: xl kyne ad x bulles: xx she asses ad foles
16 Egli affidò ai suoi servi i singoli branchi separatamente e disse loro: «Passate davanti a me e lasciate un certo spazio tra un branco e l'altro».
and delyuered them vnto his seruauntes euery drooue by them selues ad sayde vnto them: goo forth before me and put a space betwyxte euery drooue.
17 Diede questo ordine al primo: «Quando ti incontrerà Esaù, mio fratello, e ti domanderà: Di chi sei tu? Dove vai? Di chi sono questi animali che ti camminano davanti?,
And he comaunded the formest sayngeWhe Esau my brother meteth the ad axeth the saynge: whose seruaute art thou and whither goost thou and whose ar these that goo before ye:
18 tu risponderai: Del tuo fratello Giacobbe: è un dono inviato al mio signore Esaù; ecco egli stesso ci segue».
thou shalt say they be thy seruaunte Iacobs and are a present sent vnto my lorde Esau and beholde he him selfe cometh after vs.
19 Lo stesso ordine diede anche al secondo e anche al terzo e a quanti seguivano i branchi: «Queste parole voi rivolgerete ad Esaù quando lo troverete;
And so comaunded he the seconde ad euen so the thirde and lykewyse all that folowed the drooues sainge of this maner se that ye speake vnto Esau whe ye mete him
20 gli direte: Anche il tuo servo Giacobbe ci segue». Pensava infatti: «Lo placherò con il dono che mi precede e in seguito mi presenterò a lui; forse mi accoglierà con benevolenza».
ad saye more ouer. Beholde thy seruaunte Iacob cometh after vs for he sayde. I will pease his wrath with the present yt goth before me and afterward I will see him myself so peradventure he will receaue me to grace.
21 Così il dono passò prima di lui, mentr'egli trascorse quella notte nell'accampamento.
So went the preset before him ad he taried all that nyghte in the tente
22 Durante quella notte egli si alzò, prese le due mogli, le due schiave, i suoi undici figli e passò il guado dello Iabbok.
ad rose vp the same nyghte ad toke his. ij. wyves and his. ij. maydens and his. xi. sonnes and went ouer the foorde Iabok.
23 Li prese, fece loro passare il torrente e fece passare anche tutti i suoi averi.
And he toke them ad sent the ouer the ryuer ad sent ouer that he had
24 Giacobbe rimase solo e un uomo lottò con lui fino allo spuntare dell'aurora.
ad taried behinde him selfe alone. And there wrastled a man with him vnto the breakynge of the daye.
25 Vedendo che non riusciva a vincerlo, lo colpì all'articolazione del femore e l'articolazione del femore di Giacobbe si slogò, mentre continuava a lottare con lui.
And when he sawe that he coude not prevayle agaynst him he smote hi vnder the thye and the senowe of Iacobs thy shranke as he wrastled with him.
26 Quegli disse: «Lasciami andare, perché è spuntata l'aurora». Giacobbe rispose: «Non ti lascerò, se non mi avrai benedetto!».
And he sayde: let me goo for the daye breaketh. And he sayde: I will not lett the goo excepte thou blesse me.
27 Gli domandò: «Come ti chiami?». Rispose: «Giacobbe».
And he sayde vnto him: what is thy name? He answered: Iacob.
28 Riprese: «Non ti chiamerai più Giacobbe, ma Israele, perché hai combattuto con Dio e con gli uomini e hai vinto!».
And he sayde: thou shalt be called Iacob nomore but Israell. For thou hast wrastled with God and with men ad hast preuayled.
29 Giacobbe allora gli chiese: «Dimmi il tuo nome». Gli rispose: «Perché mi chiedi il nome?». E qui lo benedisse.
And Iacob asked him sainge tell me thi name. And he sayde wherfore dost thou aske after my name? and he blessed him there.
30 Allora Giacobbe chiamò quel luogo Penuel «Perché - disse - ho visto Dio faccia a faccia, eppure la mia vita è rimasta salva».
And Iacob called the name of the place Peniel for I haue sene God face to face and yet is my lyfe reserved.
31 Spuntava il sole, quando Giacobbe passò Penuel e zoppicava all'anca.
And as he went ouer Peniel the sonne rose vpon him and he halted vpon his thye:
32 Per questo gli Israeliti, fino ad oggi, non mangiano il nervo sciatico, che è sopra l'articolazione del femore, perché quegli aveva colpito l'articolazione del femore di Giacobbe nel nervo sciatico.
wherfore the childern of Israell eate not of the senow that shrancke vnder the thye vnto this daye: because that he smote Iacob vnder the thye in the senow that shroncke.
