1 Sarai, moglie di Abram, non gli aveva dato figli. Avendo però una schiava egiziana chiamata Agar,

Sarai, Abram's wife, hadn't been able to have any children for him. However, she owned a female Egyptian slave named Hagar,

2 Sarai disse ad Abram: «Ecco, il Signore mi ha impedito di aver prole; unisciti alla mia schiava: forse da lei potrò avere figli». Abram ascoltò la voce di Sarai.

so Sarai said to Abram, “Please listen to me. The Lord hasn't let me have any children. So please go and sleep with my slave. Maybe I can have a family through her.” Abram agreed to what Sarai had suggested.

3 Così, al termine di dieci anni da quando Abram abitava nel paese di Canaan, Sarai, moglie di Abram, prese Agar l'egiziana, sua schiava e la diede in moglie ad Abram, suo marito.

So Sarai, Abram's wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband as his wife. Abram had been living in the land of Canaan for ten years when this happened.

4 Egli si unì ad Agar, che restò incinta. Ma, quando essa si accorse di essere incinta, la sua padrona non contò più nulla per lei.

Abram slept with Hagar and she became pregnant. When she realized she was pregnant, she treated her mistress with contempt.

5 Allora Sarai disse ad Abram: «L'offesa a me fatta ricada su di te! Io ti ho dato in braccio la mia schiava, ma da quando si è accorta d'essere incinta, io non conto più niente per lei. Il Signore sia giudice tra me e te!».

Then Sarai complained to Abram, “What I'm suffering is all your doing! I gave you my servant to sleep with, and now that she knows she's pregnant, she treats me with contempt. May the Lord decide who's at fault—you or me!”

6 Abram disse a Sarai: «Ecco, la tua schiava è in tuo potere: falle ciò che ti pare». Sarai allora la maltrattò tanto che quella si allontanò.

“Listen, she's your slave!” Abram replied. “You can do whatever you want to her.” Sarai treated Hagar so badly that she ran away.

7 La trovò l'angelo del Signore presso una sorgente d'acqua nel deserto, la sorgente sulla strada di Sur,

The angel of the Lord met Hagar at a spring in the desert—the spring on the road to Shur.

8 e le disse: «Agar, schiava di Sarai, da dove vieni e dove vai?». Rispose: «Vado lontano dalla mia padrona Sarai».

He asked her, “Hagar, Sarai's slave—where have you come from, and where are you going?” “I'm running away from my mistress Sarai,” she replied.

9 Le disse l'angelo del Signore: «Ritorna dalla tua padrona e restale sottomessa».

“Go back to your mistress and do what she tells you,” the angel of the Lord told her.

10 Le disse ancora l'angelo del Signore: «Moltiplicherò la tua discendenza e non si potrà contarla per la sua moltitudine».

Then he continued, “I will give you many, many descendants—in fact they'll be so many they can't be counted.”

11 «Ecco, sei incinta: partorirai un figlio e lo chiamarai Ismaele, perché il Signore ha ascoltato la tua afflizione. Soggiunse poi l'angelo del Signore:

The angel of the Lord went on to tell her: “Listen! You're pregnant, and you will have a son. You are to name him Ishmael, for the Lord has heard how you've suffered.

12 Egli sarà come un ònagro; la sua mano sarà contro tutti e la mano di tutti contro di lui e abiterà di fronte a tutti i suoi fratelli».

He'll be a wild donkey kind of man—he will fight with everyone, and everyone will fight with him. He will forever be fighting with his relatives.”

13 Agar chiamò il Signore, che le aveva parlato: «Tu sei il Dio della visione», perché diceva: «Qui dunque sono riuscita ancora a vedere, dopo la mia visione?».

From then on Hagar called the Lord who spoke to her, “You are the God who sees me,” because she said, “Here I saw the one who sees me.”

14 Per questo il pozzo si chiamò Pozzo di Lacai-Roi; è appunto quello che si trova tra Kades e Bered.

That's why the well is called “the Well of the Living One who Sees Me.” It's still there, between Kadesh and Bered.

15 Agar partorì ad Abram un figlio e Abram chiamò Ismaele il figlio che Agar gli aveva partorito.

Hagar gave birth to a son for Abram. Abram named his son Ishmael.

16 Abram aveva ottantasei anni quando Agar gli partorì Ismaele.

Abram was 86 when Hagar had Ishmael.
