Esdra 10

1 Mentre Esdra pregava e faceva questa confessione piangendo, prostrato davanti alla casa di Dio, si riunì intorno a lui un'assemblea molto numerosa d'Israeliti, uomini, donne e fanciulli, e il popolo piangeva dirottamente.

Now, when Ezra had prayed and when he had made confession, weeping and casting himself down, before the house of God, there gathered unto him out of Israel, an exceeding large convocation—men and women and children, for the people wept with a very bitter weeping.

2 Allora Secania, figlio di Iechièl, uno dei figli di Elam, prese la parola e disse a Esdra: «Noi siamo stati infedeli verso il nostro Dio, sposando donne straniere, prese dalle popolazioni del luogo. Orbene: c'è ancora una speranza per Israele nonostante ciò.

Then responded Shecaniah son of Jehiel of the sons of Elam, and said unto Ezra, We, have been faithful with our God, and have married foreign women from among the peoples of the land, —yet, now, there is hope for Israel concerning this thing.

3 Ora noi facciamo questa alleanza davanti al nostro Dio: rimanderemo tutte queste donne e i figli nati da esse, secondo il tuo consiglio, mio signore, e il consiglio di quelli che tremano davanti al comando del nostro Dio. Si farà secondo la legge!

Now, therefore, let us solemnize a covenant unto our God—to put away all the women and such as have been born of them, in the counsel of my lord, and them who tremble at the commandment of our God, —and, according to the law, let it be done.

4 Alzati, perché a te è affidato questo compito; noi saremo con te; sii forte e mettiti all'opera!».

Arise, for, upon thee, resteth the thing, but, we, are with thee, —be strong, and act.

5 Allora Esdra si alzò e fece giurare ai capi dei sacerdoti e dei leviti e a tutto Israele che avrebbero agito secondo quelle parole; essi giurarono.

Then arose Ezra and made the rulers of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel, swear to do according to this word—and they sware.

6 Esdra allora, alzatosi davanti alla casa di Dio, andò nella camera di Giovanni, figlio di Eliasib. Là egli passò la notte, senza prendere cibo né bere acqua, perché era in lutto a causa dell'infedeltà dei rimpatriati.

Then arose Ezra from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jehohanan son of Eliashib, —and, when he came thither, bread, did he not eat, and, water, did he not drink, for he was mourning over the unfaithfulness of them of the Exile.

7 Poi fu fatta passare la voce in Giuda e Gerusalemme a tutti i rimpatriati che si radunassero in Gerusalemme:

Then made they a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem, unto all the Sons of the Exile, to gather themselves together unto Jerusalem;

8 a chiunque non fosse venuto entro tre giorni - così disponeva il consiglio dei capi e degli anziani - sarebbero stati votati allo sterminio tutti i beni ed egli stesso sarebbe stato escluso dalla comunità dei rimpatriati.

and, whosoever should not come within three days, according to the counsel of the rulers and the elders, all his goods should be devoted, —and, himself, be separated from the convocation of them of the Exile.

9 Allora tutti gli uomini di Giuda e di Beniamino si radunarono a Gerusalemme entro tre giorni; si era al nono mese, il venti del mese. Tutto il popolo stava nella piazza del tempio, tremante per questo evento e per gli scrosci della pioggia.

Then were gathered together all the men of Judah and Benjamin unto Jerusalem, within three days, the same, was the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month, —and all the people remained in the broadway of the house of God, trembling concerning the thing, and because of the heavy rains.

10 Allora il sacerdote Esdra si alzò e disse loro: «Voi avete commesso un atto d'infedeltà, sposando donne straniere: così avete accresciuto la colpevolezza d'Israele.

Then arose Ezra the priest, and said unto them, Ye, have acted unfaithfully, and have married foreign women, —to add unto the guilt of Israel.

11 Ma ora rendete lode al Signore, Dio dei vostri padri, e fate la sua volontà, separandovi dalle popolazioni del paese e dalle donne straniere».

Now, therefore, make confession unto Yahweh God of your fathers, and do his pleasure, —and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the foreign women.

12 Tutta l'assemblea rispose a gran voce: «Sì, dobbiamo fare secondo la tua parola.

Then responded all the convocation and said, with a loud voice, —Thus, according to thy word concerning us, must it be done.

13 Ma il popolo è numeroso e siamo al tempo delle piogge; non è possibile restare all'aperto. D'altra parte non è lavoro di un giorno o di due, perché siamo in molti ad aver peccato in questa materia.

Nevertheless, the people, are many, and, the season, is that of the heavy rains, and we are not able to stand outside, —and, the business, is not one for a single day, nor yet for two, for we have abundantly transgressed, in this thing.

14 I nostri capi stiano a rappresentare tutta l'assemblea; e tutti quelli delle nostre città che hanno sposato donne straniere vengano in date determinate e accompagnati dagli anziani della rispettiva città e dai loro giudici, finché non abbiano allontanato da noi l'ira ardente del nostro Dio per questa causa».

Let, we beseech thee, our rulers take up their station for all the convocation, and, all who, throughout our cities, have married foreign women, let them come in at times appointed, and, with them, the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the glow of the anger of our God be turned from us, concerning this matter.

15 Soltanto Giònata figlio di Asaèl e Iaczeia figlio di Tikva si opposero, appoggiati da Mesullàm e dal levita Sabbetài.

Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah, made a stand against this, —and, Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite, helped them.

16 I rimpatriati fecero come era stato proposto: il sacerdote Esdra si scelse alcuni uomini, capifamiglia, uno per casato, tutti designati per nome. Essi iniziarono le sedute il primo giorno del decimo mese per esaminare la questione

But the Sons of the Exile, did thus, and Ezra the priest separated to himself certain men—ancestral heads by their ancestral houses, and all of them by name, —and they took their seats on the first day of the tenth month to search into the matter;

17 e terminarono di esaminare tutti gli uomini che avevano sposato donne straniere il primo giorno del primo mese.

and they made an end with all the men who had married foreign women, —by the first day of the first month.

18 Tra gli appartenenti ai sacerdoti, che avevano sposato donne straniere, c'erano: dei figli di Giosuè figlio di Iozadàk e tra i suoi fratelli: Maaseia, Elièzer, Iarib e Godolia.

Now there were found, of the sons of the priests, who had married foreign women, —of the sons of Jeshua son of Jozadak, and his brethren, Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah;

19 Essi hanno promesso con giuramento di rimandare le loro donne e hanno offerto un ariete in espiazione della loro colpa.

and they gave their hand, that they would put away their wives, —and, being guilty, [they offered] a ram of the flock for their guilt.

20 Dei figli di Immer: Canàni e Zebadia.

And, of the sons of Immer, Hanani, and Zebadiah.

21 Dei figli di Carim: Maaseia, Elia, Semaia, Iechièl e Uzzia.

And, of the sons of Harim, Maaseiah and Elijah and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah.

22 Dei figli di Pascur: Elioènai, Maaseia, Ismaele, Natanaele, Iozabàd ed Eleasà.

And, of the sons of Passhur, Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasar.

23 Degli appartenenti ai leviti: Iozabàd, Simei, Chelaia, chiamato il Chelita, Petachia, Giuda ed Elièzer.

And, of the Levites, Jozabad and Shimei, and Kelaiah, the same, is Kelita, Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

24 Dei cantori: Eliasib. Dei portinai: Sallùm, Telem e Uri.

And, of the singers, Eliashib. And, of the doorkeepers, Shallum and Telem and Uri.

25 Tra gli Israeliti: dei figli di Paros: Ramia, Izzia, Malchia, Miamin, Eleàzaro, Malchia e Benaià.

And, of Israel, of the sons of Parosh, Ramiah and Izziah and Malchijah and Mijamin and Eleazar, and Malchijah, and Benaiah.

26 Dei figli di Elam: Mattania, Zaccaria, Iechièl, Abdi, Ieremòt ed Elia.

And, of the sons of Elam, Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel and Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Elijah.

27 Dei figli di Zattu: Elioenài, Eliasib, Mattania, Ieremòt, Zabad e Aziza.

And, of the sons of Zattu, Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza.

28 Dei figli di Bebai: Giovanni, Anania, Zabbai e Atlai.

And, of the sons of Bebai, Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, Athlai.

29 Dei figli di Bani: Mesullàm, Malluch, Adaia, Iasub, Seal e Ieramòt.

And, of the sons of Bani, Meshullam, Malluch, and Adaiah, Jashub, and Sheal, Jeremoth.

30 Dei figli di Pacat-Moab: Adna, Kelal, Benaià, Maaseia, Mattania, Bezaleèl, Binnui e Manàsse.

And, of the sons of Pahath-moab, Adna and Chelal, —Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, and Binnui, and Manasseh.

31 Dei figli di Carim: Elièzer, Ishshia, Malchia, Semaia, Simeone,

And, [of] the sons of Harim, Eliezer, Isshijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon;

32 Beniamino, Malluch, Semaria.

Benjamin, Malluch, Shemariah.

33 Dei figli di Casum: Mattenai, Mattatta, Zabad, Elifèlet, Ieremai, Manàsse e Simei.

Of the sons of Hashum, Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, —Jeremai, Manasseh, Shimei.

34 Dei figli di Bani: Maadai, Amram, Uel,

Of the sons of Bani, Maadai, Amram, and Uel;

35 Benaià, Bedia, Cheluu,

Benaiah, Bedeiah, Cheluhu;

36 Vania, Meremòt, Eliasib,

Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib;

37 Mattenai, Iaasai.

Mettaniah, Mattenai, and Jaasu;

38 Dei figli di Binnui: Simei,

and Bani, and Binnui, Shimei;

39 Selemia, Natàn, Adaia.

and Shelemiah, and Nathan, and Adaiah;

40 Dei figli di Azzur: Sasai, Sàrai,

Machnadebai, Shashai, Sharai;

41 Azareèl, Selemia, Semaria,

Azarel, and Shelemiah, Shemariah;

42 Sallùm, Amaria, Giuseppe.

Shallum, Amariah, Joseph.

43 Dei figli di Nebo: Ieièl, Mattitia, Zabad, Zebina, Iaddai, Gioele, Benaià.

Of the sons of Nebo, Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, —Iddo, and Joel, Benaiah.

44 Tutti questi avevano sposato donne straniere e rimandarono le donne insieme con i figli che avevano avuti da esse.

All these, had taken foreign women, —and had begotten of them children.
