Atti 5
1 Un uomo di nome Anania con la moglie Saffira vendette un suo podere
But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
2 e, tenuta per sé una parte dell'importo d'accordo con la moglie, consegnò l'altra parte deponendola ai piedi degli apostoli.
and kept back [part] of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
3 Ma Pietro gli disse: «Anania, perché mai satana si è così impossessato del tuo cuore che tu hai mentito allo Spirito Santo e ti sei trattenuto parte del prezzo del terreno?
But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thy heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back [part] of the price of the land?
4 Prima di venderlo, non era forse tua proprietà e, anche venduto, il ricavato non era sempre a tua disposizione? Perché hai pensato in cuor tuo a quest'azione? Tu non hai mentito agli uomini, ma a Dio».
While it remained, did it not remain thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thy power? How is it that thou hast conceived this thing in thy heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
5 All'udire queste parole, Anania cadde a terra e spirò. E un timore grande prese tutti quelli che ascoltavano.
And Ananias hearing these words fell down and gave up the ghost: and great fear came upon all that heard it.
6 Si alzarono allora i più giovani e, avvoltolo in un lenzuolo, lo portarono fuori e lo seppellirono.
And the young men arose and wrapped him round, and they carried him out and buried him.
7 Avvenne poi che, circa tre ore più tardi, entrò anche sua moglie, ignara dell'accaduto.
And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
8 Pietro le chiese: «Dimmi: avete venduto il campo a tal prezzo?». Ed essa: «Sì, a tanto».
And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much. And she said, Yea, for so much.
9 Allora Pietro le disse: «Perché vi siete accordati per tentare lo Spirito del Signore? Ecco qui alla porta i passi di coloro che hanno seppellito tuo marito e porteranno via anche te».
But Peter [said] unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to try the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them that have buried thy husband are at the door, and they shall carry thee out.
10 D'improvviso cadde ai piedi di Pietro e spirò. Quando i giovani entrarono, la trovarono morta e, portatala fuori, la seppellirono accanto a suo marito.
And she fell down immediately at his feet, and gave up the ghost: and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her by her husband.
11 E un grande timore si diffuse in tutta la Chiesa e in quanti venivano a sapere queste cose.
And great fear came upon the whole church, and upon all that heard these things.
12 Molti miracoli e prodigi avvenivano fra il popolo per opera degli apostoli. Tutti erano soliti stare insieme nel portico di Salomone;
And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people: and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch.
13 degli altri, nessuno osava associarsi a loro, ma il popolo li esaltava.
But of the rest durst no man join himself to them: howbeit the people magnified them;
14 Intanto andava aumentando il numero degli uomini e delle donne che credevano nel Signore
and believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women:
15 fino al punto che portavano gli ammalati nelle piazze, ponendoli su lettucci e giacigli, perché, quando Pietro passava, anche solo la sua ombra coprisse qualcuno di loro.
insomuch that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that, as Peter came by, at the least his shadow might overshadow some one of them.
16 Anche la folla delle città vicine a Gerusalemme accorreva, portando malati e persone tormentate da spiriti immondi e tutti venivano guariti.
And there also came together the multitude from the cities round about Jerusalem, bringing sick folk, and them that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.
17 Si alzò allora il sommo sacerdote e quelli della sua parte, cioè la setta dei sadducei, pieni di livore,
But the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy,
18 e fatti arrestare gli apostoli li fecero gettare nella prigione pubblica.
and laid hands on the apostles, and put them in public ward.
19 Ma durante la notte un angelo del Signore aprì le porte della prigione, li condusse fuori e disse:
But an angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them out, and said,
20 «Andate, e mettetevi a predicare al popolo nel tempio tutte queste parole di vita».
Go ye, and stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this Life.
21 Udito questo, entrarono nel tempio sul far del giorno e si misero a insegnare. Quando arrivò il sommo sacerdote con quelli della sua parte, convocarono il sinedrio e tutti gli anziani dei figli d'Israele; mandarono quindi a prelevare gli apostoli nella prigione.
And when they heard [this], they entered into the temple about daybreak, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison-house to have them brought.
22 Ma gli incaricati, giunti sul posto, non li trovarono nella prigione e tornarono a riferire:
But the officers that came found them not in the prison; and they returned, and told,
23 «Abbiamo trovato il carcere scrupolosamente sbarrato e le guardie ai loro posti davanti alla porta, ma, dopo aver aperto, non abbiamo trovato dentro nessuno».
saying, The prison-house we found shut in all safety, and the keepers standing at the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within.
24 Udite queste parole, il capitano del tempio e i sommi sacerdoti si domandavano perplessi che cosa mai significasse tutto questo,
Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were much perplexed concerning them whereunto this would grow.
25 quando arrivò un tale ad annunziare: «Ecco, gli uomini che avete messo in prigione si trovano nel tempio a insegnare al popolo».
And there came one and told them, Behold, the men whom ye put in the prison are in the temple standing and teaching the people.
26 Allora il capitano uscì con le sue guardie e li condusse via, ma senza violenza, per timore di esser presi a sassate dal popolo.
Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them, [but] without violence; for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned.
27 Li condussero e li presentarono nel sinedrio; il sommo sacerdote cominciò a interrogarli dicendo:
And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them,
28 «Vi avevamo espressamente ordinato di non insegnare più nel nome di costui, ed ecco voi avete riempito Gerusalemme della vostra dottrina e volete far ricadere su di noi il sangue di quell'uomo».
saying, We strictly charged you not to teach in this name: and behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.
29 Rispose allora Pietro insieme agli apostoli: «Bisogna obbedire a Dio piuttosto che agli uomini.
But Peter and the apostles answered and said, We must obey God rather than men.
30 Il Dio dei nostri padri ha risuscitato Gesù, che voi avevate ucciso appendendolo alla croce.
The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew, hanging him on a tree.
31 Dio lo ha innalzato con la sua destra facendolo capo e salvatore, per dare a Israele la grazia della conversione e il perdono dei peccati.
Him did God exalt with his right hand [to be] a Prince and a Saviour, to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins.
32 E di questi fatti siamo testimoni noi e lo Spirito Santo, che Dio ha dato a coloro che si sottomettono a lui».
And we are witnesses of these things; and [so is] the Holy Spirit, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
33 All'udire queste cose essi si irritarono e volevano metterli a morte.
But they, when they heard this, were cut to the heart, and were minded to slay them.
34 Si alzò allora nel sinedrio un fariseo, di nome Gamaliele, dottore della legge, stimato presso tutto il popolo. Dato ordine di far uscire per un momento gli accusati,
But there stood up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in honor of all the people, and commanded to put the men forth a little while.
35 disse: «Uomini di Israele, badate bene a ciò che state per fare contro questi uomini.
And he said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves as touching these men, what ye are about to do.
36 Qualche tempo fa venne Tèuda, dicendo di essere qualcuno, e a lui si aggregarono circa quattrocento uomini. Ma fu ucciso, e quanti s'erano lasciati persuadere da lui si dispersero e finirono nel nulla.
For before these days rose up Theudas, giving himself out to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were dispersed, and came to nought.
37 Dopo di lui sorse Giuda il Galileo, al tempo del censimento, e indusse molta gente a seguirlo, ma anch'egli perì e quanti s'erano lasciati persuadere da lui furono dispersi.
After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the enrolment, and drew away [some of the] people after him: he also perished; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered abroad.
38 Per quanto riguarda il caso presente, ecco ciò che vi dico: Non occupatevi di questi uomini e lasciateli andare. Se infatti questa teoria o questa attività è di origine umana, verrà distrutta;
And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will be overthrown:
39 ma se essa viene da Dio, non riuscirete a sconfiggerli; non vi accada di trovarvi a combattere contro Dio!».
but if it is of God, ye will not be able to overthrow them; lest haply ye be found even to be fighting against God.
40 Seguirono il suo parere e, richiamati gli apostoli, li fecero fustigare e ordinarono loro di non continuare a parlare nel nome di Gesù; quindi li rimisero in libertà.
And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles unto them, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
41 Ma essi se ne andarono dal sinedrio lieti di essere stati oltraggiati per amore del nome di Gesù.
They therefore departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the Name.
42 E ogni giorno, nel tempio e a casa, non cessavano di insegnare e di portare il lieto annunzio che Gesù è il Cristo.
And every day, in the temple and at home, they ceased not to teach and to preach Jesus [as] the Christ.
