1 Atalia madre di Acazia, visto che era morto suo figlio, si propose di sterminare tutta la discendenza regale.

Now when Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, saw that her son was dead, she arose and killed all the royal children.

2 Ma Ioseba, figlia del re Ioram e sorella di Acazia, sottrasse Ioas figlio di Acazia dal gruppo dei figli del re destinati alla morte e lo portò con la nutrice nella camera dei letti; lo nascose così ad Atalia ed egli non fu messo a morte.

But Jehosheba, a daughter of King Jehoram and sister of Ahaziah, took Joash son of Ahaziah, and hid him away from among the king's sons who were killed, along with his nurse; she put them into a bedroom. They hid him from Athaliah so that he was not killed.

3 Rimase sei anni nascosto presso di lei nel tempio; intanto Atalia regnava sul paese.

He remained with her six years, hidden in the house of Yahweh, while Athaliah reigned over the land.

4 Il settimo anno Ioiada convocò i capi di centinaia dei Carii e delle guardie e li fece venire nel tempio. Egli concluse con loro un'alleanza, facendoli giurare nel tempio; quindi mostrò loro il figlio del re.

In the seventh year, Jehoiada sent messages and brought the commanders of hundreds of the Carites and of the guard, and brought them to himself, into the temple of Yahweh. He made a covenant with them, and he made them swear an oath in the house of Yahweh. Then he showed them the king's son.

5 Diede loro le seguenti disposizioni: «Questo farete: un terzo di quelli che fra di voi iniziano il servizio di sabato per fare la guardia alla reggia,

He commanded them, saying, “This is what you must do. A third of you who come on the Sabbath will keep watch over the king's house,

6 un altro terzo alla porta di Sur e un terzo alla porta dietro i cursori; voi farete invece la guardia alla casa di Massach,

and a third will be at the Sur Gate, and a third at the gate behind the guardhouse.”

7 gli altri due gruppi di voi, ossia quanti smontano il sabato, faranno la guardia al tempio.

The two other groups who are not serving on the Sabbath, you must keep the watch over the house of Yahweh for the king.

8 Circonderete il re, ognuno con la sua arma in pugno e chi tenta di penetrare nello schieramento sia messo a morte. Accompagnerete il re ovunque egli vada».

You must surround the king, every man with his weapons in his hand. Whoever enters within your ranks, let him be killed. You must stay with the king when he goes out, and when he comes in.

9 I capi di centinaia fecero quanto aveva disposto il sacerdote Ioiada. Ognuno prese i suoi uomini, quelli che entravano in servizio e quelli che smontavano il sabato, e andarono dal sacerdote Ioiada.

So the commanders of hundreds obeyed everything Jehoiada the priest commanded. Each one took his men, those who were to come in to serve on the Sabbath, and those who were to stop serving on that Sabbath; and they came to Jehoiada the priest.

10 Il sacerdote consegnò ai capi di centinaia lance e scudi del re Davide, che erano nel deposito del tempio.

Then Jehoiada the priest gave the commanders of hundreds the spears and shields that belonged to King David and that were in the house of Yahweh.

11 Le guardie, ognuno con l'arma in pugno, si disposero dall'angolo meridionale del tempio fino all'angolo settentrionale, davanti all'altare e al tempio e intorno al re.

So the guards stood, each man with his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the temple to the left side, near the altar and the temple, surrounding the king.

12 Allora Ioiada fece uscire il figlio del re, gli impose il diadema e le insegne; lo proclamò re e lo unse. Gli astanti batterono le mani ed esclamarono: «Viva il re!».

Then Jehoiada brought out the king's son Joash, put the crown on him, and gave him the covenant decrees. Then they made him king and anointed him. They clapped their hands and said, “Long live the king!”

13 Atalia, sentito il clamore delle guardie e del popolo, si diresse verso la moltitudine nel tempio.

When Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she came to the people in the house of Yahweh.

14 Guardò: ecco, il re stava presso la colonna secondo l'usanza; i capi e i trombettieri erano intorno al re, mentre tutto il popolo del paese esultava e suonava le trombe. Atalia si stracciò le vesti e gridò: «Tradimento, tradimento!».

She looked, and, behold, the king was standing by the pillar, as the custom was, and the captains and the trumpeters were by the king. All the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. Then Athaliah tore her clothes and shouted, “Treason! Treason!”

15 Il sacerdote Ioiada ordinò ai capi dell'esercito: «Fatela uscire tra le file e chiunque la segua sia ucciso di spada». Il sacerdote infatti aveva stabilito che non venisse uccisa nel tempio del Signore.

Then Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of hundreds who were over the army, saying, “Bring her out between the ranks. Anyone who follows her, kill him with the sword.” For the priest had said, “Do not let her be killed in the house of Yahweh.”

16 Le misero le mani addosso ed essa raggiunse la reggia attraverso l'ingresso dei Cavalli e là fu uccisa.

So they seized her as she reached the place where the horses enter the palace grounds, and there she was killed.

17 Ioiada concluse un'alleanza fra il Signore, il re e il popolo, con cui questi si impegnò a essere il popolo del Signore; ci fu anche un'alleanza fra il re e il popolo.

Then Jehoiada made a covenant between Yahweh and the king and people, that they should be Yahweh's people, and also between the king and the people.

18 Tutto il popolo del paese penetrò nel tempio di Baal e lo demolì, frantumandone gli altari e le immagini: uccisero dinanzi agli altari lo stesso Mattan, sacerdote di Baal. Il sacerdote Ioiada mise guardie intorno al tempio.

So all the people of the land went to the house of Baal and tore it down. They smashed Baal's altars and his idol figures to pieces, and they killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, in front of those altars. Then Jehoida the priest appointed guards over the temple of Yahweh.

19 Egli prese i capi di centinaia dei Carii e delle guardie e tutto il popolo del paese; costoro fecero scendere il re dal tempio e attraverso la porta delle Guardie lo condussero nella reggia, ove egli sedette sul trono regale.

Jehoida took with him the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, the guard, and all the people of the land, and together they brought down the king from the house of Yahweh and they went into the king's house, entering by way of the gate of the guards. Joash took his place on the royal throne.

20 Tutto il popolo del paese fu in festa; la città restò tranquilla. Atalia fu uccisa con la spada nella reggia.

So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet after Athaliah had been killed with the sword at the king's house.

21 Quando divenne re, Ioas aveva sette anni.

Joash was seven years old when he began to reign.
