1 I Filistei attaccarono Israele; gli Israeliti fuggirono davanti ai Filistei e caddero, colpiti a morte, sul monte Gelboe.
Now, the Philistines, fought against Israel, —and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and the wounded fell in Mount Gilboa.
2 I Filistei inseguirono molto da vicino Saul e i suoi figli e uccisero Giònata, Abinadàb e Malchisùa, figli di Saul.
And the Philistines followed hard after Saul, and after his sons, —and the Philistines smote Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, sons of Saul.
3 La battaglia si riversò tutta su Saul; sorpreso dagli arcieri, fu ferito da tali tiratori.
And the battle, went sore, against Saul, and the archers discovered him with the bow, —and he was terrified because of the archers.
4 Allora Saul disse al suo scudiero: «Prendi la spada e trafiggimi; altrimenti verranno quei non circoncisi e infieriranno contro di me». Ma lo scudiero, in preda a forte paura, non volle. Saul allora, presa la spada, vi si gettò sopra.
Therefore said Saul unto his armour-bearer, Draw out thy sword and thrust me through therewith, lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me. But his armour-bearer would not, for he feared greatly, —so then Saul took the sword, and fell upon it.
5 Anche lo scudiero, visto che Saul era morto, si gettò sulla spada e morì.
And, when his armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead, then, he also, fell upon the sword, and died.
6 Così finì Saul con i tre figli; tutta la sua famiglia perì insieme.
So Saul died, and his three sons, and, all his house, together, died.
7 Quando tutti gli Israeliti della valle constatarono che i loro erano fuggiti e che erano morti Saul e i suoi figli, abbandonarono le loro città e fuggirono. Vennero i Filistei e vi si insediarono.
And, when all the men of Israel that were in the vale saw, that they had fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, then forsook they their cities, and fled, and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
8 Il giorno dopo i Filistei andarono a spogliare i cadaveri e trovarono Saul e i suoi figli che giacevano sul monte Gelboe.
And it came to pass, on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, —that they found Saul, and his sons, lying prostrate in Mount Gilboa.
9 Lo spogliarono asportandogli il capo e le armi; quindi inviarono per tutto il paese filisteo ad annunziare la vittoria ai loro idoli e al popolo.
So they stript him, and took his head, and his armour, —and sent throughout the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it to their idols, and to the people.
10 Depositarono le sue armi nel tempio del loro dio; il teschio l'inchiodarono nel tempio di Dagon.
And they put his armour, in the house of their gods, —but, his skull, fastened they up, in the house of Dagon.
11 Quando gli abitanti di Iabes vennero a sapere ciò che i Filistei avevano fatto a Saul,
And, when all Jabesh-Gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,
12 tutti i loro guerrieri andarono a prelevare il cadavere di Saul e i cadaveri dei suoi figli e li portarono in Iabes; seppellirono le loro ossa sotto la quercia in Iabes, quindi digiunarono per sette giorni.
then rose up all the men of valour, and took away the corpse of Saul, and the corpses of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, —and buried their bodies under the terebinth, in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
13 Così Saul morì a causa della sua infedeltà al Signore, perché non ne aveva ascoltato la parola e perché aveva evocato uno spirito per consultarlo.
Thus died Saul, for his unfaithfulness wherewith he dealt unfaithfully against Yahweh, over the word of Yahweh, which he kept not, —and, also, in asking by necromancy when he desired to enquire;
14 Non aveva consultato il Signore; per questo il Signore lo fece morire e trasferì il regno a Davide figlio di Iesse.
and enquired not of Yahweh, wherefore he slew him, —and turned round the kingdom unto David, son of Jesse.
