2 Samuel 10
1 Sesudah itu raja bangsa Amon meninggal dunia dan anaknya, Hanun, menggantikan dia.
And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.
2 Daud berkata, “Saya akan menunjukkan kebaikan dan kesetiaan kepada Hanun, anak Nahas, seperti yang sudah ditunjukkan ayahnya kepada saya.” Maka Daud mengutus beberapa pejabatnya untuk menyampaikan pesan turut berdukacita atas kematian ayah Hanun. Namun, pada waktu mereka memasuki negeri bangsa Amon,
And David said, I will show kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness unto me. So David sent by his servants to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.
3 para pejabat tinggi Amon berkata kepada Hanun, “Tuanku Raja, jangan berpikir bahwa Daud mengutus para pejabatnya hanya untuk menyampaikan turut berduka atas kematian ayah Tuan! Tidak! Daud mengirimkan mereka ke sini untuk memata-matai kota kita dan mendapatkan informasi agar mereka dapat menyerang dan merebut kota ini!”
But the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honor thy father, in that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David sent his servants unto thee to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?
4 Karena itu Raja Hanun memerintahkan untuk menangkap para utusan Daud, mencukur sebelah jenggot mereka, dan menggunting bagian bawah jubah mereka sehingga kaki mereka tampak telanjang sampai ke pantat. Lalu mereka disuruh pulang.
So Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.
5 Ketika Daud mendengar bahwa para utusannya diperlakukan demikian, dia menyuruh orang untuk menemui mereka dan menyampaikan, “Tinggallah di Yeriko sampai jenggot kalian tumbuh kembali, lalu kembalilah ke Yerusalem.” Dia menyampaikan seperti itu karena mereka sudah sangat dipermalukan.
When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
6 Ketika orang-orang Amon menyadari bahwa mereka sudah membuat Daud membenci mereka, bangsa Amon pun menyewa pasukan dari negeri Siria: 20.000 tentara pejalan kaki dari daerah Bet Rehob dan Zoba, 1.000 tentara dari Maaka, dan 12.000 tentara dari daerah Tob.
And when the children of Ammon saw that they were become odious to David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah with a thousand men, and the men of Tob twelve thousand men.
7 Sewaktu Daud mendengar berita itu, dia memerintahkan Yoab dan seluruh pasukannya untuk berperang melawan mereka.
And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
8 Bangsa Amon berbaris dan siap untuk berperang di depan pintu gerbang benteng kota mereka, sementara orang-orang Siria dari Zoba, Rehob, Tob, dan Maaka mengatur barisan mereka sendiri di padang.
And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate: and the Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob, and the men of Tob and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.
9 Ketika Yoab melihat pasukannya sudah dikepung dari depan dan dari belakang, dia memilih sebagian tentara terbaik Israel dan menempatkan mereka untuk berperang melawan pasukan Siria,
Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:
10 sedangkan pasukan Israel selebihnya dia serahkan ke dalam pimpinan Abisai, adiknya, untuk menghadapi pasukan Amon.
and the rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and he put them in array against the children of Ammon.
11 Kata Yoab kepada Abisai, “Kalau orang Siria itu mulai mengalahkan pasukanku, kirimkanlah orang dari pasukanmu untuk menyelamatkan kami. Tetapi kalau orang Amon itu mulai mengalahkan pasukanmu, aku akan mengirim orang untuk menyelamatkanmu.
And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me; but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.
12 Kuatkanlah hatimu! Kita harus bertempur dengan gagah perkasa untuk membela nama Israel dan kota-kota Allah kita! Semoga TUHAN melakukan apa yang menurut-Nya terbaik.”
Be of good courage, and let us play the man for our people, and for the cities of our God: and Jehovah do that which seemeth him good.
13 Lalu Yoab bersama pasukannya maju melawan orang Siria, dan pasukan Siria itu melarikan diri dari mereka.
So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.
14 Ketika pasukan Amon melihat bahwa pasukan Siria melarikan diri, mereka mundur dari hadapan pasukan Abisai dan masuk ke gerbang kota mereka. Sesudah pertempuran itu selesai, Yoab dan seluruh pasukan Israel kembali dari negeri Amon ke Yerusalem.
And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
15 Dengan demikian bangsa Siria menyadari bahwa mereka sudah dikalahkan oleh bangsa Israel. Karena itu, Raja Hadadeser mengumpulkan seluruh pasukan Siria, termasuk yang di seberang sungai Efrat. Mereka semua berkumpul di kota Helam dibawah pimpinan Sobak, panglima pasukan Hadadeser.
And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they gathered themselves together.
And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the River: and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer at their head.
17 Sewaktu Daud diberitahu tentang hal itu, dia mengumpulkan seluruh orang Israel dan memimpin mereka menyeberangi sungai Yordan lalu tiba di Helam. Di sana pasukan besar Siria sudah siap untuk memerangi mereka.
And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.
18 Akan tetapi, pasukan Siria itu melarikan diri dari hadapan Israel. Pasukan Daud membunuh 700 pengendara kereta kuda Siria dan 40.000 tentara pejalan kaki. Mereka juga membunuh Sobak, panglima pasukan Siria.
And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians [the men of] seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, so that he died there.
19 Ketika semua raja daerah yang bersekutu dengan Hadadeser melihat bahwa dia sudah dikalahkan oleh bangsa Israel, mereka pun membuat perdamaian dengan Raja Daud dan tunduk di bawah pemerintahan Israel. Akibat peristiwa itu, bangsa Siria tidak lagi bersedia menolong bangsa Amon.
And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.
