1 Samuel 5
1 Sesudah bangsa Filistin merampas peti perjanjian Allah, mereka membawanya dari medan pertempuran di kota Eben Haezer ke kota Asdod.
Now, the Philistines, having taken the ark of God, —brought it in from Eben-ezer, unto Ashdod.
2 Mereka membawa peti itu ke dalam rumah kuil dewa mereka yang bernama Dagon, dan meletakkannya di samping patung Dagon.
And, when the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, —and placed it by the side of Dagon.
3 Namun keesokan paginya, saat penduduk kota Asdod masuk ke dalam kuil, mereka mendapati patung dewa Dagon sudah jatuh dengan wajah menghadap ke tanah di hadapan peti perjanjian TUHAN. Lalu mereka mengangkat patung Dagon itu dan mengembalikannya ke tempat semula.
And, when they of Ashdod rose early on the morrow and entered into the house of Dagon, they looked and lo! Dagon, was lying prostrate on his face to the earth, before the ark of Yahweh, —so they took Dagon and restored him to his place.
4 Dan keesokan paginya, patung Dagon kembali terbaring di tanah di hadapan peti itu. Namun kali ini, kepala dan kedua tangan patung Dagon itu terlepas dari tubuhnya dan berada di ambang pintu kuilnya. Hanya bagian tubuhnya saja yang ada di hadapan peti perjanjian TUHAN.
And, when they rose up early in the morning of the morrow, lo! Dagon, was lying prostrate on his face to the earth, before the ark of Yahweh—and, the head of Dagon, and both the palms of his hands, had been cut off against the threshold, only, Dagon himself, was left to him.
5 Itulah sebabnya, sampai hari ini, para imam Dagon atau penyembahnya yang akan masuk ke dalam kuil Dagon di Asdod dilarang menginjak ambang pintu itu.
For this cause, do not the priests of Dagon, nor any that enter into the house of Dagon, tread upon the threshold of Dagon, in Ashdod, —until this day.
6 TUHAN memberikan hukuman berat kepada penduduk Asdod dan daerah sekitarnya. Dia membuat mereka sangat menderita dengan terserang penyakit yang mengakibatkan benjol-benjol di tubuh mereka.
Then was the hand of Yahweh heavy against them of Ashdod, and he astounded them, —and smote with tumours Ashdod and her bounds.
7 Saat penduduk Asdod melihat apa yang terjadi, mereka berkata, “Peti dewa Israel tidak boleh tetap berada di sini! Dewa Israel sedang memberikan hukuman yang sangat berat atas kita dan dewa kita, Dagon!”
And, when the men of Ashdod saw that, so, it was, then kept they saying, Let not the ark of the God of Israel abide with us, for, hard, is his hand upon us, and upon Dagon our god.
8 Maka penduduk Asdod mengirim pesan kepada kelima raja bangsa Filistin untuk berkumpul, dan menuntut mereka dengan berkata, “Kalian harus melakukan sesuatu dengan peti dewa Israel itu!” Sesudah para pemimpin mendiskusikan hal itu, mereka memutuskan, “Mari kita pindahkan peti itu ke Gat.” Kemudian mereka memindahkannya ke Gat.
So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said—What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they said: To Gath, let the ark of the God of Israel go round. So they took round the ark of the God of Israel.
9 Tetapi setibanya di Gat, TUHAN juga menghukum kota Gat dengan penyakit yang sama, sehingga para penduduk panik.
And so it was, after they had taken it round, then was the hand of Yahweh against the city, with an exceeding great consternation, and he smote the men of the city, from the least, even unto the greatest, —and they brake out with tumours.
10 Maka diputuskan lagi untuk memindahkan peti itu ke Ekron. Tetapi setibanya di sana, penduduk kota itu memprotes dengan berteriak, “Kalau peti dewa orang Israel ada di sini, kami bisa mati semua!”
Then sent they the ark of God to Ekron, —and so it was, when the ark of God entered Ekron, that the Ekronites made outcry, saying—They have brought round unto me the ark of the God of Israel, to slay me, and my people!
11 Maka para penduduk Ekron menuntut supaya kelima raja Filistin berkumpul lagi. Lalu para penduduk berkata, “Bawalah peti dewa orang Israel itu keluar dari sini! Kembalikan saja ke tempatnya semula. Kalau tidak, kita semua akan mati terbunuh oleh dewa mereka!” Mereka berkata demikian karena Allah sudah menghajar kota itu dengan hukuman yang sangat berat.
So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said—Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and restore it to its own place, that it slay not me, and my people. For there had come a deadly consternation, throughout all the city, heavy exceedingly, was the hand of God there.
12 Ada penduduk yang sudah mati, dan yang masih hidup juga diserang penyakit benjolan. Tangisan penduduk kota itu minta tolong kepada dewa-dewa mereka naik sampai ke langit.
And, the men who died not, were smitten with the tumours, —so the cry of the city for help, ascended the heavens.
