1 Suatu hari Abimelekh anak Gideon pergi ke kota Sikhem tempat kaum keluarga ibunya. Di sana ia berbicara dengan mereka, katanya,
Abimelech, son of Jerub-baal, went to his mother's brothers at Shechem and told them and all his mother's relatives,
2 "Coba tanyakan kepada seluruh penduduk Sikhem, mana yang lebih baik: Diperintah oleh ketujuh puluh anak Gideon, atau oleh satu orang saja? Ingatkan mereka juga bahwa saya masih ada hubungan darah dengan mereka."
“Please ask all the leaders of Shechem, ‘What's best for you? That seventy men, all of them Jerub-baal's sons, rule over you—or just one man?’ Remember I'm your own flesh and blood!”
3 Maka pergilah kaum keluarga ibu Abimelekh itu kepada orang-orang Sikhem dan menyampaikan pesan Abimelekh kepada mereka. Lalu penduduk Sikhem itu memutuskan untuk mengikuti Abimelekh, sebab menurut mereka ia memang masih ada hubungan darah dengan mereka.
His mother's brothers shared his proposal with all the leaders of Shechem, and they decided to follow Abimelech, because they said, “He is our relative.”
4 Kemudian mereka memberikan kepadanya tujuh puluh uang perak yang diambil dari rumah penyembahan Baal-Berit. Dengan uang itu Abimelekh mengupah segerombolan orang-orang kurang ajar untuk bergabung dengannya,
They gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of Baal-berith. Abimelech used the money to hire some arrogant troublemakers as his gang.
5 lalu pergi ke kampung halaman ayahnya di Ofra. Di sana ia membunuh ketujuh puluh saudaranya itu di atas satu batu. Tetapi Yotam, anak bungsu Gideon tidak turut terbunuh karena ia bersembunyi.
He went to his father's house in Ophrah, and on one stone killed his seventy half-brothers, the sons of Jerub-baal. But Jotham, Jerub-baal's youngest son, escaped by going into hiding.
6 Maka berkumpullah seluruh penduduk Sikhem dan Bet-Milo, lalu pergi ke pohon terpentin keramat di Sikhem. Di sana mereka menobatkan Abimelekh menjadi raja.
Then the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo all assembled by the oak at the pillar in Shechem and made Abimelech their king.
7 Setelah Yotam mendengar tentang hal itu, ia pergi berdiri di puncak Gunung Gerizim, lalu berteriak ke arah orang-orang itu, "Dengarkan saya, hai orang-orang Sikhem, supaya Allah juga mendengarkan kalian!
When Jotham got to hear this, he went up to the top of Mount Gerizim, and shouted in a loud voice: “Listen to me, leaders of Shechem, and God may to listen to you!
8 Sekali peristiwa berkumpullah pohon-pohon hendak memilih raja untuk mereka. Maka berkatalah mereka kepada pohon zaitun, 'Jadilah raja kami.'
Once upon a time the trees were determined to anoint a king to rule over them. They said to the olive tree, ‘You shall be our king.’
9 Jawab pohon zaitun, 'Ah, saya tidak mau. Sebab kalau saya menjadi rajamu, saya harus berhenti menghasilkan minyak zaitun yang dipakai untuk menghormati dewa-dewa dan manusia.'
But the olive tree replied, ‘Should I stop giving my rich oil that benefits both gods and men just to go and sway to and fro over the trees?’
10 Lalu kata pohon-pohon kepada pohon ara, 'Kau saja menjadi raja kami.'
Then the trees asked the fig tree, ‘You come and be our king.’
11 Tetapi pohon ara menjawab, 'Saya tidak mau, sebab untuk menjadi rajamu saya harus berhenti menghasilkan buah ara yang manis-manis.'
But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I stop giving my good sweet fruit just to go and sway to and fro over the trees?’
12 Setelah itu, berkatalah pohon-pohon kepada pokok anggur, 'Nah, kaulah yang menjadi raja kami.'
Then the trees asked the grape vine, ‘You come and be our king.’
13 Tetapi pokok anggur menjawab, 'Masakan saya harus berhenti menghasilkan anggur yang menyenangkan hati dewa-dewa dan manusia, hanya untuk menjadi rajamu!'
But the grape vine replied, ‘Should I stop giving my wine that makes both gods and men happy just to go and sway to and fro over the trees?’
14 Karena itu berkatalah semua pohon kepada semak duri, 'Kau sajalah menjadi raja kami.'
Then all the trees asked the thorn bush, ‘You come and be our king.’
15 Semak duri itu menjawab, 'Kalau kalian sungguh-sungguh mau menjadikan saya rajamu, mari berlindung di bawah naungan saya. Kalau kalian tidak mau, maka dari cabang-cabang saya yang berduri ini akan keluar api yang membakar habis pohon-pohon aras di Libanon.'"
The thorn bush replied to the trees, ‘If you're really sincere about anointing me as your king, come and find shelter in my shade. But if not, may fire flame out of the thorn bush and burn up the cedars of Lebanon!’
16 "Nah," kata Yotam selanjutnya, "Apakah dengan menobatkan Abimelekh menjadi raja, kalian telah bertindak dengan tulus dan ikhlas? Sudahkah kalian melakukan yang sepatutnya terhadap Gideon, ayahku, dan kaum keluarganya? Sudahkah kalian membalas jasa-jasa ayahku
Have you acted sincerely and honestly by making Abimelech your king? Have you been acted honorably to Jerub-baal and his family? Have you respected him for all that he accomplished?
17 yang telah berjuang untuk kalian? Ingat, ia telah mempertaruhkan nyawanya untuk melepaskan kalian dari kekuasaan orang-orang Midian.
Don't forget how my father fought for you and risked his own life to save you from the Midianites!
18 Tetapi sekarang kalian mengkhianati keluarga ayahku. Anak-anaknya telah kalian bunuh semuanya--tujuh puluh orang sekaligus di atas satu batu. Abimelekh adalah anak ayahku dari hambanya. Tetapi kalian menobatkan dia menjadi raja Sikhem, hanya karena ia masih ada hubungan darah dengan kalian.
But you have rebelled against my father's family today. You have killed his seventy sons on one stone and have made Abimelech, the son of his slave woman, king over the leaders of Shechem simply because he's related to you.
19 Kalau tindakanmu hari ini terhadap ayahku dan keluarganya itu tulus dan ikhlas, silakan bersenang-senang dengan Abimelekh, dan biar dia bersenang-senang dengan kalian.
Have you acted sincerely and honestly toward Jerub-baal and his family today? If so, may you be happy with Abimelech, and may he be happy with too!
20 Tetapi kalau tidak demikian halnya, semoga dari Abimelekh keluarlah api yang membakar habis penduduk Sikhem serta Bet-Milo. Dan semoga dari penduduk Sikhem serta Bet-Milo pun keluarlah api yang membakar habis Abimelekh."
But if you haven't, then may fire flame out from Abimelech, and may it burn up the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo, and may fire flame out from the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo and burn up Abimelech!”
21 Setelah itu Yotam melarikan diri lalu tinggal di Beer, karena ia takut kepada Abimelekh, saudaranya itu.
Then Jotham escaped and ran away. He went to Beer and stayed there because of the threat of Abimelech his brother.
22 Tiga tahun lamanya Abimelekh memerintah Israel.
Abimelech ruled over Israel for three years.
23 Lalu Tuhan menimbulkan permusuhan antara Abimelekh dengan orang-orang Sikhem sehingga mereka melawan dia.
Then God sent an evil spirit to cause trouble between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem. The leaders of Shechem betrayed Abimelech.
24 Hal ini terjadi supaya terbalaslah kejahatan Abimelekh dan orang-orang Sikhem yang menghasut dia untuk membunuh ketujuh puluh anak-anak Gideon.
This happened because of the murder of the seventy sons of Jerub-baal and that responsibility for their blood be placed on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the leaders of Shechem, who provided the means to kill his brothers.
25 Orang-orang Sikhem itu menempatkan penghadang-penghadang di puncak-puncak gunung untuk menangkap Abimelekh. Setiap orang yang lewat di situ dirampok oleh penghadang-penghadang itu. Maka hal itu diberitahukan kepada Abimelekh.
The leaders of Shechem sent men to the hill passes to lie in wait and attack Abimelech, and, in the meantime, they robbed everyone who passed by on the road. Abimelech found out what was happening.
26 Pada waktu itu Gaal anak Ebed telah datang bersama-sama dengan saudara-saudaranya untuk tinggal di Sikhem; dan orang-orang Sikhem percaya kepadanya.
Gaal, son of Ebed, had moved to Shechem with his relatives, and he gained the loyalty of the leaders of Shechem.
27 Mereka pergi memetik anggur di kebun-kebun anggur, lalu membuat minuman anggur, dan mengadakan pesta. Mereka makan minum di tempat penyembahan dewa mereka sambil menyumpah-nyumpahi Abimelekh.
At harvest time they went out into the countryside and gathered the grapes from their vineyards and trod them. They celebrated by having a festival in the temple of their god, where they ate and drank, and cursed Abimelech.
28 "Kita ini siapa sehingga kita harus tunduk kepada Abimelekh?" kata Gaal. "Dia itu siapa sebenarnya? Bukankah dia anak Gideon yang dengan Zebul wakilnya itu telah menjadi hamba Hemor, ayah Sikhem, leluhur kita!"
“Who is this Abimelech?” asked Gaal, son of Ebed. “And who is Shechem, that we should have to serve him? Isn't he the son of Jerub-baal, while Zebul is actually the one in charge? You should serve the family of Hamor, the father of Shechem. Why should we have to serve Abimelech?
29 "Seandainya saya yang memimpin orang-orang Sikhem ini, pasti sudah habislah riwayat Abimelekh itu! Akan saya katakan kepadanya, 'Ayo maju! Kerahkan tentaramu dan marilah keluar berperang!'"
If I was the one in charge of you people, I would dispose of Abimelech! I would tell him, ‘Get your army together, and come and fight!’”
30 Zebul, penguasa kota Sikhem, menjadi marah ketika mendengar omongan Gaal itu.
When Zebul, the governor of the city, got to hear what Gaal was saying, he became very angry.
31 Ia mengirim utusan kepada Abimelekh di Aruma untuk menyampaikan pesan ini, "Gaal anak Ebed bersama-sama dengan saudara-saudaranya telah datang ke Sikhem dan menghasut penduduknya supaya melawan engkau.
He secretly sent messengers to Abimelech to tell him, “Look, Gaal, son of Ebed, and his relatives have arrived in Shechem, and they are stirring up the town to rebel against you.
32 Karena itu, hendaklah engkau dan orang-orangmu pergi bersembunyi di ladang pada waktu malam.
So come at night with your army and hide in the countryside.
33 Besok pagi apabila matahari terbit, serbulah kota itu dengan mendadak. Dan jika Gaal dengan orang-orangnya keluar melawan engkau, itulah kesempatanmu untuk menggempur dia!"
In the morning as soon as the sun comes up, go and attack the town. When Gaal and his men come out to fight you, you can do whatever you want to them.”
34 Maka Abimelekh dengan semua anak buahnya bergerak pada waktu malam. Mereka berpencar menjadi empat pasukan lalu pergi bersembunyi di sekeliling kota Sikhem.
Abimelech left at night along with his army, and they separated into four companies that lay in wait near Shechem.
35 Segera setelah Abimelekh dan orang-orangnya melihat Gaal keluar dan berdiri di gerbang kota, mereka semuanya keluar dari tempat persembunyian.
When Gaal, son of Ebed, went out and stood at the town's entrance gate, Abimelech and his army came out from where they had been hiding.
36 Gaal melihat mereka, lalu berkata kepada Zebul, "Lihat! Ada orang-orang turun kemari dari puncak-puncak gunung!" "Ah, itu bukan orang," sahut Zebul, "itu hanya bayang-bayangan di gunung."
Gaal saw the army approaching and said to Zebul, “Look! Some people are coming down from the hilltops!” “That's just shadows made by the hills that look like men,” Zebul replied.
37 Lalu kata Gaal lagi, "Benar! Ada orang turun dari lereng bukit, dan satu kelompok lagi sedang menuju kemari dari arah pohon terpentin keramat!"
“No really, people are coming down from the high ground,” Gaal repeated. “Plus, there's another company coming down the road that passes the diviners' oak tree.”
38 Berkatalah Zebul kepada Gaal, "Nah, di mana sekarang mulut besarmu itu? Dulu katamu untuk apa kita harus tunduk kepada si Abimelekh itu? Inilah orang-orang yang kauhina itu. Ayo maju sekarang menyerang mereka!"
“Where's your big mouth now? You're the one who said, ‘Who is this Abimelech, that we should have to serve him?’” Zebul told him. “Aren't these the people you detested? Go on then—go and fight with them!”
39 Lalu Gaal membawa keluar orang-orang Sikhem dan melawan Abimelekh.
So Gaal led the leaders of Shechem out of the town and fought with Abimelech.
40 Tetapi Abimelekh menyerbu dia sampai ia melarikan diri. Korban berjatuhan sampai di depan pintu gerbang kota.
Abimelech attacked, and chased him and his men as they ran away, killing many of them as they tried to get back to the town gate.
41 Akhirnya Abimelekh kembali ke Aruma, dan menetap di sana. Zebul mengusir Gaal dengan saudara-saudaranya keluar dari Sikhem, sehingga mereka tidak dapat tinggal di sana lagi.
Abimelech went back to Arumah while Zebul expelled Gaal and his relatives from Shechem.
42 Besoknya orang-orang Sikhem mulai meninggalkan kota, hendak ke ladang dan hal itu dilaporkan kepada Abimelekh.
The following day the people of Shechem went out to the fields, and Abimelech was informed about it.
43 Lalu Abimelekh mengumpulkan orang-orangnya, dan membagi mereka menjadi tiga pasukan, lalu mereka pergi bersembunyi di ladang-ladang. Ketika ia melihat penduduk kota itu menuju ke ladang, ia keluar dari persembunyiannya lalu membunuh mereka.
He divided his army into three companies and had them lay in ambush in the fields. When he saw the people coming out of the city, he attacked and killed them.
44 Sementara Abimelekh dengan pasukannya cepat-cepat maju menyerbu gerbang kota, kedua pasukannya yang lain mengejar dan membunuh orang-orang yang lari ke ladang-ladang.
Abimelech and his company raced to occupy the town's entrance gate, while the two companies raced to attack everyone in the fields and kill them.
45 Abimelekh bertempur terus sepanjang hari dan menduduki kota itu; penduduknya dibunuh, lalu kotanya dihancurkannya kemudian ditaburi garam.
The battle for the town lasted all day but eventually Abimelech captured it. He killed the people, demolished the town, and scattered salt over the ground.
46 Ketika orang-orang yang berada di dalam benteng Sikhem mendengar tentang hal itu, mereka masuk ke dalam lubang di bawah kuil El-Berit untuk berlindung.
When all the leaders of the tower of Shechem realized what had happened, they took refuge in the strongroom of the temple of El-berith.
47 Lalu orang memberitahukan kepada Abimelekh bahwa orang-orang di benteng Sikhem itu telah berkumpul di sana.
When Abimelech found out that all the leaders in the tower of Shechem had gathered there,
48 Karena itu, Abimelekh dengan orang-orangnya pergi ke Gunung Zalmon. Di sana ia memotong dahan-dahan kayu dengan kapak, lalu memikul dahan-dahan itu di atas pundaknya, kemudian menyuruh orang-orangnya juga cepat-cepat melakukan seperti yang telah dilakukannya.
he and all the men with him went up Mount Zalmon. Abimelech grabbed hold of an ax and cut a branch from the trees. He lifted it onto his shoulder, and told his men, “Quick! You saw what I did. Do the same!”
49 Maka mereka masing-masing memotong dahan-dahan kayu, lalu berjalan mengikuti Abimelekh. Semua dahan kayu itu mereka timbun di mulut lubang kuil itu, lalu membakarnya, sementara orang-orang Sikhem itu masih berada di dalamnya. Karena itu matilah semua penduduk Sikhem itu, kira-kira seribu orang pria dan wanita.
Each of them cut down a branch and followed Abimelech. They placed the branches against the strongroom and set it on fire. So all the people who lived in the tower of Shechem died, around one thousand men and women.
50 Setelah itu Abimelekh pergi ke Tebes. Ia mengepung kota itu lalu mendudukinya.
Then Abimelech went to attack Thebez and captured it.
51 Di tengah-tengah kota itu ada sebuah menara yang kuat. Maka seluruh penduduk kota itu lari ke sana. Mereka masuk ke dalam menara itu dan mengunci pintunya, lalu naik ke atas.
But there was a strong tower inside the city. All the men and women and the town leaders ran there and barricaded themselves in, and then went up to the roof of the tower.
52 Kemudian datanglah Abimelekh ke situ untuk menyerang menara itu. Ketika ia tiba di pintu menara itu dan hendak membakarnya,
Abimelech went up to the tower to attack it. But as he came close to the tower's entrance to set it on fire,
53 seorang wanita menjatuhkan sebuah batu penggilingan ke atas kepalanya sehingga retak batok kepalanya itu.
a woman dropped millstone down on Abimelech's head and cracked his skull open.
54 Cepat-cepat Abimelekh memanggil pemuda yang memikul senjatanya dan berkata, "Cabutlah pedangmu dan bunuhlah saya; saya tidak mau dikatakan orang bahwa saya dibunuh oleh wanita." Maka pemuda itu menikam dia sampai mati.
He quickly called the young man who carried his weapons, and ordered him, “Draw your sword and kill me, so they won't say about me that a woman killed him.” So the young man drove his sword through him, and he died.
55 Ketika orang-orang Israel melihat bahwa Abimelekh sudah mati, mereka semuanya pulang.
When the Israelites saw that Abimelech was dead, they all left and went home.
56 Demikianlah caranya Allah membalas Abimelekh atas kejahatan yang dilakukannya terhadap ayahnya, ketika ia membunuh ketujuh puluh orang saudara-saudaranya.
This is how God paid back Abimelech's crime against his father of murdering his seventy brothers.
57 Dan Tuhan menghukum juga orang-orang Sikhem karena kejahatan mereka. Hal itu tepat seperti yang telah dikatakan Yotam anak Gideon tentang mereka ketika ia menyumpahi mereka.
He also repaid the people of Shechem for their evil, and the curse of Jotham, son of Jerub-baal, came down upon them.
