Ulangan 19
1 "Sesudah bangsa-bangsa itu dibinasakan TUHAN Allahmu dan negerinya diberikan kepadamu, dan sesudah kamu mengambil kota-kota dan rumah-rumah mereka dan diam di situ,
When the Lord thy God shall roote out the nations, whose lande the Lord thy God giueth thee, and thou shalt possesse them, and dwell in their cities, and in their houses,
2 wilayah itu harus kamu bagi menjadi tiga bagian, masing-masing dengan sebuah kota suaka yang mudah dicapai supaya setiap pembunuh dapat melarikan diri ke sana.
Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the middes of thy lande which the Lord thy God giueth thee to possesse it.
Thou shalt prepare thee the way, and deuide the coastes of the land, which the Lord thy God giueth thee to inherite, into three parts, that euery manslayer may flee thither.
4 Kalau seseorang dengan tidak sengaja telah membunuh orang lain yang bukan musuhnya, ia dapat melarikan diri ke salah satu kota itu dan boleh tinggal hidup.
This also is ye cause wherfore the manslayer shall flee thither, and liue: who so killeth his neighbor ignorantly, and hated him not in time passed:
5 Misalnya dua orang bersama-sama masuk hutan untuk menebang kayu. Sementara yang seorang menebang pohon, kepala kapaknya terlepas dari gagangnya dan kena temannya sehingga tewas. Maka orang yang telah membunuh tanpa sengaja itu tidak bersalah dan boleh lari ke salah satu dari tiga kota suaka itu supaya selamat. Sekiranya ada satu kota suaka saja, mungkin jaraknya ke sana terlalu jauh, dan anggota keluarga yang bertanggung jawab untuk membalas pembunuhan itu dapat mengejar dia dan dalam kemarahannya membunuh orang yang tak bersalah.
As hee that goeth vnto the wood with his neighbor to hew wood, and his hand striketh with the axe to cut downe the tree, if the head slip from the helue, and hit his neighbour that he dieth, the same shall flee vnto one of the cities, and liue,
Least the auenger of the blood follow after the manslayer, while his heart is chafed, and ouertake him, because the way is long, and slaie him, although he be not worthy of death, because he hated him not in time passed.
7 Sebab itu aku memerintahkan kamu untuk menyediakan tiga kota.
Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt appoint out three cities for thee.
8 Apabila TUHAN Allahmu sudah memperluas wilayahmu seperti yang dijanjikan-Nya kepada leluhurmu, dan seluruh negeri itu sudah diberikan kepadamu,
And when the Lord thy God enlargeth thy coastes (as he hath sworne vnto thy fathers) and giueth thee all the lande which he promised to giue vnto thy fathers,
9 kamu harus memilih tiga kota suaka lagi. (Negeri itu akan diberikan kepadamu kalau kamu melakukan segala sesuatu yang saya perintahkan kepadamu hari ini, dan kalau kamu mencintai TUHAN Allahmu dan hidup menurut ajaran-Nya.)
(If thou keepe all these commandements to doe them, which I commaund thee this day: to wit, that thou loue the Lord thy God, and walke in his waies for euer) then shalt thou adde three cities moe for thee besides those three,
10 Lakukanlah itu supaya kamu jangan berdosa karena membiarkan orang yang tak bersalah dibunuh di negeri yang diberikan TUHAN Allahmu kepadamu."
That innocent bloude be not shed within thy land, which the Lord thy God giueth thee to inherite, lest bloud be vpon thee.
11 "Tetapi lain halnya kalau seseorang menghadang musuhnya dan dengan sengaja dan rasa benci membunuh dia, lalu melarikan diri ke salah satu kota suaka untuk mendapat perlindungan.
But if a man hate his neighbour, and lay waite for him, and rise against him, and smite any man that he die, and flee vnto any of these cities,
12 Dalam hal itu para pemimpin kotanya harus memanggil orang itu lalu menyerahkan dia kepada anggota keluarga yang bertanggung jawab untuk membalas pembunuhan itu, supaya ia dapat dibunuh.
Then the Elders of his citie shall send and set him thence, and deliuer him into the hands of the auenger of the blood, that he may die.
13 Jangan menaruh kasihan kepadanya. Bebaskanlah Israel dari pembunuh itu, supaya kamu sejahtera."
Thine eye shall not spare him, but thou shalt put away the crie of innocent blood from Israel, that it may goe well with thee.
14 "Apabila kamu sudah sampai di negeri yang diberikan TUHAN Allahmu kepadamu, janganlah menggeser batas tanah tetanggamu yang ditentukan di zaman dahulu."
Thou shalt not remooue thy neighbours marke, which they of olde time haue set in thine inheritance, that thou shalt inherite in the lande, which ye Lord thy God giueth thee to possesse it.
15 "Seorang saksi saja tidak cukup untuk menyatakan seorang tertuduh bersalah; sekurang-kurangnya dua saksi diperlukan untuk hal itu.
One witnes shall not rise against a man for any trespasse, or for any sinne, or for any fault that hee offendeth in, but at the mouth of two witnesses or at the mouth of three witnesses shall the matter be stablished.
16 Kalau seseorang mau menjatuhkan orang lain dengan tuduhan palsu di pengadilan, maka
If a false witnesse rise vp against a man to accuse him of trespasse,
17 kedua-duanya harus pergi ke tempat ibadat yang ditentukan TUHAN supaya diadili oleh para imam dan hakim yang sedang bertugas.
Then both the men which striue together, shall stand before ye Lord, euen before the Priests and the Iudges, which shall be in those daies,
18 Para hakim harus menyelidiki perkara itu dengan teliti, dan kalau ternyata orang itu memfitnah sesamanya orang Israel,
And the Iudges shall make diligent inquisition: and if the witnesse be found false, and hath giuen false witnes against his brother,
19 ia harus menjalani hukuman yang dimaksudkan untuk lawannya itu. Dengan demikian kamu memberantas kejahatan itu.
Then shall yee doe vnto him as hee had thought to doe vnto his brother: so thou shalt take euil away forth of the middes of thee.
20 Semua orang akan mendengar tentang hal itu dan menjadi takut, sehingga tak ada lagi yang berbuat sejahat itu.
And the rest shall heare this, and feare, and shall henceforth commit no more any such wickednes among you.
21 Jangan kasihan dalam perkara-perkara semacam itu. Hukumannya berupa: Nyawa ganti nyawa, mata ganti mata, gigi ganti gigi, tangan ganti tangan dan kaki ganti kaki."
Therefore thine eye shall have no compassion, but life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foote for foote.
