1 Samuel 31
1 Sementara itu orang Filistin bertempur melawan orang Israel di pegunungan Gilboa. Banyak orang Israel tewas di situ, dan yang lainnya, termasuk Saul dan putra-putranya melarikan diri.
And the Philistines are fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel flee from the face of the Philistines, and fall wounded in Mount Gilboa,
2 Tetapi mereka disusul oleh orang Filistin dan tiga orang di antara putra-putra Saul itu mati dibunuh; yaitu Yonatan, Abinadab, dan Malkisua.
and the Philistines follow Saul and his sons, and the Philistines strike Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.
3 Pertempuran amat sengit di sekitar Saul, dan ia sendiri kena panah-panah musuh sehingga luka parah.
And the battle is hard against Saul, and the archers find him—men with bow—and he is greatly pained by the archers;
4 Lalu kata Saul kepada pemuda yang membawa senjatanya, "Cabutlah pedangmu dan tikamlah aku, supaya aku jangan dipermain-mainkan dan dibunuh oleh orang-orang yang tak mengenal TUHAN itu." Tetapi pemuda itu tidak mau menikamnya, karena ia sangat menghormatinya. Sebab itu Saul mengambil pedangnya sendiri dan merebahkan dirinya ke atas mata pedang itu.
and Saul says to the bearer of his weapons, “Draw your sword, and pierce me with it, lest they come—these uncircumcised—and have pierced me, and rolled themselves on me”; and the bearer of his weapons has not been willing, for he is greatly afraid, and Saul takes the sword, and falls on it.
5 Ketika pemuda itu melihat bahwa Saul sudah wafat, ia pun merebahkan dirinya ke atas mata pedangnya lalu tewas di samping Saul.
And the bearer of his weapons sees that Saul [is] dead, and he falls—he also—on his sword, and dies with him;
6 Demikianlah Saul bersama ketiga putranya, dan semua anak buahnya serta pemuda itu tewas pada satu hari itu.
and Saul dies, and three of his sons, and the bearer of his weapons, also all his men, together on that day.
7 Ketika orang-orang Israel yang tinggal di seberang Lembah Yizreel dan sebelah timur Sungai Yordan mendengar bahwa tentara Israel telah melarikan diri, dan bahwa Saul serta putra-putranya sudah tewas, mereka lari meninggalkan kota-kota mereka. Kemudian orang Filistin menduduki kota-kota itu.
And they see—the men of Israel, who [are] beyond the valley, and who [are] beyond the Jordan—that the men of Israel have fled, and that Saul and his sons have died, and they forsake the cities and flee, and Philistines come in, and dwell in them.
8 Besoknya ketika orang Filistin datang untuk merampoki mayat-mayat, mereka menemukan Saul dan ketiga putranya sudah tewas di pegunungan Gilboa.
And it comes to pass on the next day, that the Philistines come to strip the wounded, and they find Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa,
9 Mereka memenggal kepala Saul dan mengambil baju perangnya, lalu orang Filistin mengirim utusan ke seluruh negeri Filistin untuk menyampaikan kabar baik itu kepada rakyat dan dewa mereka.
and they cut off his head, and strip off his weapons, and send [them] into the land of the surrounding Philistines, to proclaim tidings [in] the house of their idols, and [among] the people;
10 Kemudian baju perang Saul itu disimpan di dalam kuil dewi Asytoret, dan badannya dipakukan pada tembok kota Bet-Sean.
and they place his weapons [in] the house of Ashtaroth, and they have fixed his body on the wall of Beth-Shan.
11 Tetapi penduduk Yabesh di Gilead mendengar apa yang telah dilakukan orang Filistin kepada Saul,
And they hear regarding it—the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead—that which the Philistines have done to Saul,
12 lalu orang-orang yang paling berani berangkat dari situ dan berjalan sepanjang malam ke Bet-Sean. Mereka menurunkan jenazah Saul dan jenazah putra-putranya dari tembok kota itu lalu membawanya ke Yabesh, dan membakarnya.
and all the men of valor arise, and go all the night, and take the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, from the wall of Beth-Shan, and come to Jabesh, and burn them there,
13 Semua tulang-tulangnya dikumpulkan dan dikebumikan di bawah pohon tamariska di kota itu, kemudian berpuasalah mereka tujuh hari lamanya.
and they take their bones, and bury [them] under the tamarisk in Jabesh, and fast seven days.
