Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,
2 mgbe ahụ Anas na Kaịfas bụ ndịisi nchụaja, okwu Chineke bịakwutere Jọn nwa Zekaraya nʼime ọzara.
during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.
3 Ọ gara nʼime obodo niile gbara Jọdan gburugburu na-ekwusa banyere baptizim nke nchegharị maka mgbaghara mmehie.
He came into all the region around the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for remission of sins.
4 Dịka e dere ya nʼakwụkwọ Aịzaya onye amụma sị, “Otu onye na-eti mkpu nʼọzara na-asị, ‘Dozienụ ụzọ maka Onyenwe anyị, meenụ ka okporoụzọ ya guzozie.
As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight.
5 A ga-ekpoju ndagwurugwu ọbụla, ugwu ọbụla na ugwu nta ọbụla ka a ga-emekwa ka ọ dị ala. Ụzọ gbagọrọ agbagọ ka a ga-eme ka o guzozie nke ọma, meekwa ka ụzọ ọjọọ niile dị larịị.
Every valley will be filled. Every mountain and hill will be brought low. The crooked will become straight, and the rough ways smooth.
6 Mmadụ niile ga-ahụkwa nzọpụta Chineke.’”
All flesh will see God’s salvation.’”
7 Jọn sịrị igwe mmadụ ndị na-apụta ka o mee ha baptizim sị, “Unu ụmụ ajụala! Onye dọrọ unu aka na ntị sị unu gbanarị ọnụma nke na-abịa?
He said therefore to the multitudes who went out to be baptised by him, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Mịanụ mkpụrụ na-egosipụta nchegharị unu. Unu amalitekwala na-asị onwe unu, ‘Anyị nwere Ebraham dịka nna.’ Nʼihi na agwa m unu na Chineke pụrụ isite na nkume ndị a mepụtara Ebraham ụmụ.
Therefore produce fruits worthy of repentance, and don’t begin to say amongst yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father;’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones!
9 Ọ bụladị ugbu a, atụkwasịla anyụike na mgbọrọgwụ osisi, osisi ọbụla nke na-adịghị amị ezi mkpụrụ ka a ga-egbutu tụba ya nʼime ọkụ.”
Even now the axe also lies at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10 Ma igwe mmadụ ahụ jụrụ ya sị, “Gịnị ka anyị kwesiri ime?”
The multitudes asked him, “What then must we do?”
11 Ọ zara ha sị, “Onye ọbụla nwere uwe abụọ, ya nye onye ọ na-adịghị nke o nwere otu. Onye nwere nri ya meekwa otu ahụ.”
He answered them, “He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise.”
12 Ọ bụladị ndị ọna ụtụ bịakwara ka e mee ha baptizim. Ha sịrị ya, “Onye ozizi, gịnị ka anyị kwesiri ime?”
Tax collectors also came to be baptised, and they said to him, “Teacher, what must we do?”
13 Ọ sịrị ha, “Unu anatala karịa otu unu kwesiri ịnata.”
He said to them, “Collect no more than that which is appointed to you.”
14 Ndị agha bịakwara jụọ ya sị, “Gịnịkwa ka anyị kwesiri ime?” Ọ sịrị ha, “Unu ejikwala ike apụnara ndị mmadụ ego ha; unu ebokwala ndị mmadụ ebubo ụgha, ka afọ ju unu nʼụgwọ a na-akwụ unu.”
Soldiers also asked him, saying, “What about us? What must we do?” He said to them, “Extort from no one by violence, neither accuse anyone wrongfully. Be content with your wages.”
15 Ndị mmadụ ji olileanya na-eche na-atulekwa nʼobi ha ma Jọn ọ bụ Kraịst ahụ.
As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ,
16 Ma Jọn zara sị ha, “Eji m mmiri na-eme unu baptizim, ma otu onye dị ike karịa m ga-abịa, onye m na-erughị ịtọpụ eriri akpụkpọụkwụ ya. Ọ ga-eji Mmụọ Nsọ na ọkụ mee unu baptizim.
John answered them all, “I indeed baptise you with water, but he comes who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptise you in the Holy Spirit and fire.
17 Ihe ịfụcha ọka ya dị nʼaka ya, iji zachaa ebe ịzọcha ọka ya nke ọma, ka e kponye ezi mkpụrụ ọka wiiti nʼime ọba, ma kpoba igbugbo ọka nʼime ọkụ nke a na-apụghị imenyụ emenyụ.”
His winnowing fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
18 O ji ọtụtụ okwu ọzọ dị iche iche dụọ ha ọdụ ma kwusaakwara ha oziọma.
Then with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people,

added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison.
21 Mgbe e mechara ndị niile baptizim, ma mechakwa Jisọs baptizim, mgbe ọ na-ekpe ekpere, eluigwe meghere.
Now when all the people were baptised, Jesus also had been baptised and was praying. The sky was opened,
