1 Nʼoge ahụ, ahụ adịghị otu nwoke a na-akpọ Lazarọs onye Betani, nke bụ obodo nta nke Meri na Mata nwanne ya nwanyị.
NOW there was a sick man, Lazarus, of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
2 Nke a bụ Meri ahụ weere mmanụ otite dị oke ọnụahịa tee Onyenwe anyị, ma jirikwa agịrị isi ya hichaa ụkwụ ya. Ọ bụ nwanne ya nwoke Lazarọs bụ onye nọ nʼọrịa.
(It was the Mary who had anointed the Lord with the balm, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
3 Nke a mere ụmụnne ya nwanyị zigara Jisọs ozi sị, “Onyenwe anyị, onye ahụ nke ị hụrụ nʼanya nọ nʼọrịa.”
The sisters therefore sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
4 Mgbe Jisọs nụrụ ya, ọ sịrị, “Ọrịa a abụghị nke ọnwụ kama ọ bụ iji nye Chineke otuto nakwa ka e site na ya nye Ọkpara Chineke otuto.”
When Jesus heard it, he said, This sickness is not for death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified thereby.
5 Jisọs hụrụ Mata, na nwanne ya nwanyị na Lazarọs nʼanya.
Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
6 Mgbe ọ nụrụ na Lazarọs nọ nʼọrịa, ọ nọkwuru mkpụrụ ụbọchị abụọ nʼebe ahụ ọ nọ.
Then, though he heard he was ill, yet notwithstanding he abode in the same place where he was two days.
7 Ya mere, ọ gwara ndị na-eso ụzọ ya, “Ngwanụ ka anyị laghachi azụ na Judịa.”
But after that he saith to his disciples, Let us go again into Judea.
8 Ma ndị na-eso ụzọ ya sịrị ya, “Onye ozizi, nʼoge nta gara aga ka ndị Juu chọrọ ịtụ gị nkume. Ị na-agakwa ebe ahụ ọzọ?”
The disciples say unto him, Rabbi, the Jews have just now sought to stone thee; and art thou going thither again?
9 Jisọs zara, “Ọ bụghị awa iri na abụọ dị nʼotu ehihie nke ụbọchị? Onye na-ejegharị nʼehihie anaghị asụ ngọngọ, nʼihi na ọ na-eji ìhè nke ụwa a ahụ ụzọ.
Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he doth not stumble, because he seeth the light of this world.
10 Ma ndị na-ejegharị nʼabalị na-azọhie ụkwụ, nʼihi na ìhè adịghị nʼime ha.”
But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light with him.
11 Mgbe o kwusiri nke a, ọ gwakwara ha, “Enyi anyị Lazarọs na-arahụ ụra, ma ana m aga ịkpọte ya nʼụra.”
These things said he: and after that he saith to them, Our friend Lazarus is asleep; but I go to waken him up.
12 Ndị na-eso ụzọ ya sịrị ya, “Onyenwe anyị, ọ bụrụ na ọ na-arahụ ụra, ọ ga-adị mma.”
Then said his disciples, Lord, if he is asleep, he will recover.
13 Ihe Jisọs na-ekwu bụ banyere ọnwụ ya ma ha chere na ọ na-ekwu banyere ịrahụ ụra efu.
Now Jesus had spoken of his death: but they apprehended that he spake of taking rest in sleep.
14 Mgbe ahụ, Jisọs gwaghere ha ọnụ, “Lazarọs anwụọla.
Then Jesus therefore told them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
15 Ma nʼihi unu, obi dị m ụtọ na anọghị m nʼebe ahụ, ka unu nwe ike kwere. Ma bịanụ ka anyị gakwuru ya.”
And I rejoice on your account that I was not there, in order that ye may believe; but let us go to him.
16 Tọmọs, onye a na-akpọ Didimọs, gwara ndị na-eso ụzọ ibe ya, “Ka anyị gakwanụ ka anyị soro ya nwụọ.”
Then said Thomas, (called Didymus, the twin, ) to his fellow-disciples, Let us go too, that we may die with him.
17 Mgbe Jisọs rutere, ọ chọpụtara na Lazarọs anọọlarị nʼili ụbọchị anọ.
Then Jesus, when he came; found that he had already lain in the tomb four days.
18 Betani dị Jerusalem nso, ihe dị ka kilomita atọ.
Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
19 Ma ọtụtụ ndị Juu bịakwutere Mata na Meri ịkasị ha obi nʼihi ọnwụ nwanne ha nwoke.
and many of the Jews had come with the women who were about Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20 Mgbe ozi ọbịbịa Jisọs ruru Mata ntị, ọ gara izute ya, ma Meri nọdụrụ nʼụlọ.
Then Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, met him: but Mary sat in the house.
21 Mata sịrị Jisọs, “Onyenwe m, a sị na ị nọ nʼebe a, nwanne m nwoke agaraghị anwụ.
And Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
22 Ma ugbu a, amara m na Chineke ga-enye gị ihe ọbụla ị rịọrọ.”
But even now I know, that whatsoever things thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee.
23 Jisọs sịrị ya, “Nwanne gị nwoke ga-ebili ọzọ.”
Jesus saith to her, Thy brother shall rise again.
24 Mata sịrị ya, “Amara m na ọ ga-ebili ọzọ nʼụbọchị mbilite nʼọnwụ nʼoge ikpeazụ.”
Martha saith to him, I know that he shall rise at the resurrection in the last day.
25 Jisọs gwara ya, “Mụ onwe m bụ mbilite nʼọnwụ na ndụ. Onye ọbụla kwere na m, a sịkwarị na ọ nwụrụ anwụ, ọ ga-adị ndụ ọzọ.
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
and every one who is alive, and believeth in me, shall never die to eternity. Believest thou this? (aiōn g165)
27 Ọ sịrị ya, “E, Onyenwe m, ekwere m na ị bụ Kraịst ahụ, Ọkpara Chineke, onye ga-abịa nʼụwa.”
She saith to him, Yes, Lord I believe that thou art the Messiah, the Son of God, who cometh into the world.
28 Mgbe o kwuchara nke a, ọ gara kpọọ nwanne ya nwanyị bụ Meri, jiri nwayọọ sị ya, “Onye ozizi abịala, ọ na-akpọ gị.”
So when she had thus spoken, she went away, and called her sister Mary privately, saying, The Master is near at hand, and calleth for thee.
29 Mgbe ọ nụrụ nke a, ọ biliri ọsịịsọ ga zute ya.
As soon as she heard it, she rose hastily, and came to him.
30 Ruo mgbe a, Jisọs abịarutebeghị nʼobodo nta ahụ, ma ọ ka nọ nʼebe ahụ Mata zutere ya.
Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was on the spot where Martha had met him.
31 Ndị Juu nọ nʼụlọ na-akasị Meri obi hụrụ ya ka ọ pụrụ ngwangwa. Ha sochiri ya nʼazụ nʼihi na ha chere na ọ na-aga nʼili ibe akwa nʼebe ahụ.
Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and comforting her, observing Mary, that she rose up hastily, and went out, followed her, saying, She is going to the tomb, to weep there.
32 Mgbe Meri rutere nʼebe Jisọs nọ, ọ dara nʼụkwụ ya sị, “Onyenwe m, ọ bụrụ na ị nọ nʼebe a, nwanne m nwoke agaraghị anwụ.”
When therefore Mary was come where Jesus was, beholding him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother would not have died!
33 Mgbe Jisọs hụrụ ya ka ọ na-ebe akwa ya na ndị Juu ahụ so ya ka ha na-ebekwa akwa, o metụrụ ya nʼime mmụọ ya. O nwere ọmịiko dị ukwuu.
When Jesus then saw her weeping, and all the Jews who came with her lamenting, he groaned in spirit, and was himself greatly agitated:
34 Ọ sịrị, “Olee ebe unu liri ya?” Ha sịrị ya, “Onyenwe anyị bịa ka ị hụ.”
and he said, Where have ye laid him? They say to him, Lord, come and see.
35 Jisọs ebee akwa.
Jesus wept.
36 Mgbe ahụ ndị Juu na-asị, “Lee ka o si hụ ya nʼanya.”
Then said the Jews, Behold, how he loved him!
37 Ma ụfọdụ nʼime ha sịrị, “Nwoke a meghere anya onye kpuru ìsì, ọ garaghị enwe ike mee ka nwoke a hapụ ịnwụ?”
But some of them said, Could not this man, who openeth the eyes of the blind, have caused that this person should not have died?
38 Ọzọkwa, Jisọs sụrụ ude nʼime onwe ya nke ukwuu, bịarute nʼili ahụ nso. Ili ahụ bụ ọgba e jiri nkume dị ukwuu mechie ọnụ ya.
Then Jesus again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre. It was an excavation, and a stone lay upon it.
39 Jisọs sịrị, “Bupunụ nkume ahụ!” Ma Mata, nwanne nwanyị onye ahụ nwụrụ anwụ, sịrị ya, “Onyenwe anyị, ọ ga na-esi isi ugbu a, nʼihi na nke a bụ abalị anọ ọ nwụrụ.”
Jesus saith, Remove the stone. The sister of the deceased, Martha, said to him, Lord, he is by this time putrid: for he hath been dead four days.
40 Ma Jisọs sịrị ya, “Ọ bụ na m agwaghị gị sị na ọ bụrụ na ị kwere ị ga-ahụ ọrụ ebube Chineke?”
Jesus saith unto her, Did I not tell thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?
41 Ya mere, ha bupụrụ nkume ahụ. Jisọs lere anya nʼelu sị, “Nna, ana m ekele gị nʼihi na ị nụla olu m.
Then they removed the stone where the deceased was lying. And Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me!
42 Amaara m na ị na-anụ olu m mgbe niile. Ana m ekwu nke a nʼihi ndị a gbara m gburugburu nʼebe a, ka ha kwere na ọ bụ gị zitere m.”
And I knew that thou always dost hear me: but for the sake of the multitude standing by I spake, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
43 Mgbe o kwusiri nke a, o jiri oke olu tie mkpu, “Lazarọs, pụta!”
And when he had thus spoken, with a loud voice he cried, Lazarus, come forth!
44 Onye ahụ nwụrụ anwụ pụtara, e jikwa akwa ozu kekọta aka ya na ụkwụ ya, werekwa akwa ịchafu kechie ihu ya. Jisọs sịrị ha, “Tọpụnụ ya, hapụ ya ka ọ laa.”
And the deceased came forth, his feet and his hands wrapped with the linen swathes; and his face bound round with a napkin. Jesus saith to them, Loose him, and let him go!
45 Ọtụtụ ndị Juu bịakwutere Meri bụ ndị hụrụ ihe a o mere, kwere na ya.
Then many of the Jews who came to Mary, and saw what Jesus had done, believed on him.
46 Ma ụfọdụ nʼime ha lara gaa kọọrọ ndị Farisii ihe o mere.
But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
47 Mgbe ahụ, ndịisi nchụaja na ndị Farisii kpọrọ nzukọ ndị Sanhedrin. Ha na-asị, “Gịnị ka anyị ga-eme? Nʼihi na nwoke a na-eme ọtụtụ ihe ịrịbama.
The chief priests and Pharisees therefore called the sanhedrim together, and said, What are we about? for this man is doing many miracles.
48 Ọ bụrụ na anyị ahapụ ya ka ọ gaa nʼihu, mmadụ niile ga-ekwere na ya. Ndị Rom ga-abịakwa, kwatuo ụlọnsọ ukwu ma napụ anyị obodo anyị.”
If we suffer him to go on thus, all men will believe on him: and the Romans will come, and take away both our place and nation.
49 Ma otu onye nʼime ha bụ Kaịfas, onyeisi nchụaja nʼafọ ahụ sịrị ha, “Unu amaghị ihe ọbụla.
Then one particular person of them, Caiaphas, being the high-priest of that year, said unto them, Ye know nothing,
50 Ọ bụ na unu amaghị na ọ ka mma ka otu onye nwụọ nʼihi mmadụ niile, karịa nʼobodo anyị niile ga-ala nʼiyi.”
nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation be not destroyed.
51 Dị ka onyeisi nchụaja nke afọ ahụ, o kwughị nke a site nʼechiche ya, kama o buru amụma na Jisọs ga-anwụ nʼihi mba ndị Juu.
And this he spake not from himself: but being the high-priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation;
52 Ọ bụghị nʼihi mba ahụ naanị, kama, ka ọ kpọkọta ụmụ Chineke ndị gbasara nʼebe niile.
and not for that nation only, but that he should collect into one body the children of God wherever dispersed.
53 Ya mere, site nʼụbọchị ahụ, ha malitere ịgba izu otu ha ga-esi gbuo ya.
Then from that day they consulted together how they might kill him.
54 Ya mere, Jisọs kwụsịrị ịgagharị ebe ndị Juu ga-ahụ ya. O siri nʼebe ahụ pụọ gaa nʼakụkụ ọzara nʼotu obodo nta a na-akpọ Ifrem. Ya na ndị na-eso ụzọ ya nọdụrụ nʼebe ahụ.
Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but went thence into the country bordering on the desert, to a city called Ephraim, and there he abode with his disciples.
55 Mmemme Ngabiga ndị Juu dịkwa nso. Ọtụtụ ndị mmadụ si nʼakụkụ ala ndị Juu niile bịa Jerusalem. Ha bịara tutu mmemme ahụ ebido ka ha mee onwe ha ka ha dị ọcha.
Now the passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, in order to purify themselves.
56 Ha na-achọ Jisọs na-ajụrịta onwe ha nʼime ụlọnsọ ukwu ahụ, “Gịnị ka unu chere? Ọ bụ na ọ gaghị abịa na mmemme a?”
Then they sought for Jesus, and said one to another, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?
57 Ma nʼoge ahụ, ndịisi nchụaja na ndị Farisii enyela iwu ka onye ọbụla hụrụ ya bịa gwa ha ka ha gaa jide ya.
Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment, that, if any person knew where he was, they should declare it, that they might apprehend him.
