< Jenesis 11 >
1 Nʼoge ahụ, ụwa niile nwere naanị otu asụsụ, okwu niile bụkwa otu.
At that time the whole world spoke just one language and used words with the same meaning.
2 Mgbe ndị mmadụ gbasara nʼakụkụ ọwụwa anyanwụ ha chọtara ala dị larịị na Shaịna biri nʼebe ahụ.
As they moved east they discovered a plain in the land of Shinar so they settled there.
They said to one another, “Come on, let's make some bricks and bake them with fire.” (They used brick instead of stone, and tar instead of cement).
4 Mgbe ahụ, ha kwuru sị, “Bịanụ ka anyị wuore onwe anyị obodo na ụlọ elu, nke elu ya ga-eru nʼeluigwe, ka anyị si otu a meere onwe anyị aha, ka anyị ghara ịbụ ndị a ga-agbasa nʼụwa niile.”
Then they said, “Now let's build a city for ourselves with a tower whose top reaches the heavens. That way we'll gain a great reputation and we won't end up being scattered all over the world.”
5 Onyenwe anyị rịdatara hụ obodo ahụ na ụlọ elu ahụ ndị mmadụ na-ewu.
But the Lord came down to take a look at the city and the tower that the people were building.
6 Onyenwe anyị sịrị, “Lee! Ọ bụrụ na ha malitere ime ihe dị otu a, ugbu a ha bụ otu ndị, nweekwa otu asụsụ, o nweghị ihe ha zubere ime nke ha na-apụghị ime.
The Lord said, “Look! These people are united and they all speak one language. If this is what they can do now when they're just getting started, nothing will be impossible for them when they all put their minds to it!
7 Ngwa, ka anyị rịda gaa gbarụọ asụsụ ha, ka onye o bụla ghara ịghọta asụsụ ibe ya.”
We need to go down and mix up their language and make it confused so they won't be able to understand what they're saying to one other.”
8 Onyenwe anyị mere ka ha gbasaa nʼelu ụwa niile. Ha kwụsịkwara iwu obodo ahụ.
The Lord sent them away from there and scattered them all over the world, and they gave up building the city.
9 Ọ bụkwa nke a mere e ji kpọọ obodo ahụ Babel nʼihi na ọ bụ nʼebe ahụ ka Onyenwe anyị wetara ọgbaaghara nʼasụsụ ndị niile bi nʼụwa. Ọ bụkwa nʼebe ahụ ka Onyenwe anyị si gbasasịa ha nʼelu ụwa dum.
That's why it was called Babel, because the Lord made the language of the world confused.
