Sálmarnir 37
1 Öfundaðu aldrei vonda menn,
[A Psalm] of David. Fret not thyself because of evil-doers, and be not envious of them that work unrighteousness;
2 því að fyrr en varir eru þeir fallnir og visna eins og grasið.
for they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and fade as the green herb.
3 Treystu heldur Drottni, vertu góðgjarn og sýndu kærleika. Þá muntu búa öruggur í landinu og farnast vel.
Confide in Jehovah, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on faithfulness;
4 Þú skalt gleðjast í Drottni – og hann mun veita þér það sem hjarta þitt þráir.
and delight thyself in Jehovah, and he will give thee the desires of thy heart.
5 Fel Drottni framtíð þína, áform þín og verk, og treystu honum. Hann mun vel fyrir öllu sjá.
Commit thy way unto Jehovah, and rely upon him: he will bring [it] to pass;
6 Heiðarleiki þinn og hreinskilni verða öllum augljós, og Drottinn mun láta þig ná rétti þínum.
and he will bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.
7 Hvíldu í Drottni og treystu honum. Bíð þess í þolinmæði að hann hefjist handa. Öfunda ekki vonda menn sem vegnar vel.
Rest in Jehovah, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him that prospereth in his way, because of the man that bringeth mischievous devices to pass.
8 Láttu af reiðinni! Slepptu heiftinni. Vertu ekki svekktur og áhyggjufullur – slíkt leiðir ekki til góðs.
Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; fret not thyself: it [would be] only to do evil.
9 Þeir sem illt fremja verða þurrkaðir út, en þeir sem treysta Drottni eignast landið og gæði þess.
For evil-doers shall be cut off; but those that wait on Jehovah, they shall possess the land.
10 Innan skamms verða guðleysingjarnir á bak og burt. Þegar þú leitar þeirra eru þeir horfnir.
For yet a little while, and the wicked is not; and thou considerest his place, but he is not.
11 En hinir hógværu fá landið til eignar, þeir munu hljóta blessun og frið.
But the meek shall possess the land, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of prosperity.
12 Drottinn hlær að þeim sem brugga launráð gegn hans trúuðu.
The wicked plotteth against the righteous, and gnasheth his teeth against him.
13 Hann hefur þegar ákveðið daginn er þeir verða dæmdir.
The Lord laugheth at him; for he seeth that his day is coming.
14 Óguðlegir hyggja á illt gegn réttlátum, undirbúa blóðbað.
The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the afflicted and needy, to slay those that are upright in [the] way:
15 En þeir munu farast fyrir eigin sverði og bogar þeirra verða brotnir.
their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken.
16 Betra er að eiga lítið og vera guðrækinn, en óguðlegur og hafa allsnægtir,
The little that the righteous hath is better than the abundance of many wicked;
17 því að óguðlegir munu falla, en Drottinn annast sína trúuðu.
for the arms of the wicked shall be broken, but Jehovah upholdeth the righteous.
18 Daglega skoðar Drottinn réttlætisverk trúaðra og reiknar þeim eilíf laun.
Jehovah knoweth the days of the perfect; and their inheritance shall be for ever:
19 Hann styður þá í kreppunni og heldur lífinu í þeim í hallæri.
they shall not be ashamed in the time of evil, and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.
20 Vantrúaðir farast og óvinir Guðs visna eins og grasið. Eins og sinu verður þeim brennt, þeir líða burt eins og reykur.
For the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of Jehovah shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume, like smoke shall they consume away.
21 Guðlaus maður tekur lán og borgar ekki, en hinn guðrækni er ónískur og gefur með gleði.
The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again; but the righteous is gracious and giveth:
22 Þeir sem Drottinn blessar eignast landið, en bannfærðum verður útrýmt.
for those blessed of him shall possess the land, and they that are cursed of him shall be cut off.
23 Drottinn stýrir skrefum hins guðrækna og gleðst yfir breytni hans.
The steps of a man are established by Jehovah, and he delighteth in his way:
24 Þótt hann falli þá liggur hann ekki flatur því að Drottinn reisir hann á fætur.
though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down, for Jehovah upholdeth his hand.
25 Ungur var ég og nú er ég gamall orðinn, en aldrei sá ég Drottin snúa baki við guðhræddum manni né heldur börn hans biðja sér matar.
I have been young, and now am old, and I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed seeking bread:
26 Nei, guðræknir menn eru mildir og lána og börn þeirra verða öðrum til blessunar.
all the day he is gracious and lendeth, and his seed shall be a blessing.
27 Viljir þú búa við frið og lifa lengi, þá forðastu illt en gerðu gott,
Depart from evil, and do good, and dwell for evermore;
28 því að Drottinn hefur mætur á góðum verkum og yfirgefur ekki sína trúuðu, hann mun varðveita þá, en uppræta niðja óguðlegra.
for Jehovah loveth judgment, and will not forsake his saints: They are preserved for ever; but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.
29 Hinir réttlátu fá landið til eignar og búa þar mann fram af manni.
The righteous shall possess the land, and dwell therein for ever.
30 Guðrækinn maður talar speki, enda réttsýnn og sanngjarn.
The mouth of the righteous proffereth wisdom, and his tongue speaketh judgment;
31 Lögmál Guðs er í hjarta hans og hann kann að greina gott frá illu.
the law of his God is in his heart; his goings shall not slide.
32 Ranglátir menn njósna um réttláta, vilja þá feiga.
The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to slay him:
33 En Drottinn stöðvar áform illvirkjanna og sýknar réttláta fyrir dómi.
Jehovah will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged.
34 Óttastu ekki, því að Drottinn mun svara bæn þinni! Gakktu hiklaust á hans vegum. Á réttum tíma mun hann veita þér velgengni og uppreisn æru. Þá muntu sjá illvirkjunum útrýmt.
Wait for Jehovah, and keep his way, and he will exalt thee to possess the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see [it].
35 Ég sá vondan mann og hrokafullan – hann þandi sig út eins og laufmikið tré –
I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading like a green tree in its native soil:
36 en svo var hann horfinn! Ég leitaði eftir honum, en fann hann ekki framar.
but he passed away, and behold, he was not; and I sought him, but he was not found.
37 En hvað um hinn ráðvanda og hreinskilna? Það er önnur saga! Því að góðir menn og friðsamir eiga framtíð fyrir höndum.
Mark the perfect, and behold the upright, for the end of [that] man is peace;
38 Illum mönnum verður útrýmt og þeir eiga enga framtíðarvon.
but the transgressors shall be destroyed together; the future of the wicked shall be cut off.
39 Drottinn bjargar hinum guðræknu. Hann er þeim hjálp og skjól á neyðartímum.
But the salvation of the righteous is of Jehovah: he is their strength in the time of trouble.
40 Þeir treysta honum og því hjálpar hann þeim og frelsar þá frá vélráðum óguðlegra.
And Jehovah will help them and deliver them: he will deliver them from the wicked, and save them; for they trust in him.
