Postulasagan 15
1 Meðan Páll og Barnabas voru í Antíokkíu komu þangað nokkrir menn frá Júdeu. Sögðu þeir við lærisveinana að þeir yrðu ekki hólpnir, nema þeir hlýddu hinni ævafornu venju Gyðinga að láta umskerast.
And certain ones, descending from Judea, were teaching the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.”
2 Páll og Barnabas rökræddu við þá fram og aftur og loks sendi söfnuðurinn þá til Jerúsalem, ásamt nokkrum heimamönnum, til að ræða mál þetta við postulana og öldungana þar.
Therefore, when Paul and Barnabas made no small uprising against them, they decided that Paul and Barnabas, and some from the opposing side, should go up to the Apostles and priests in Jerusalem concerning this question.
3 Allur söfnuðurinn fylgdi þeim út fyrir borgina, en þeir héldu síðan áfram til Jerúsalem. Þeir komu við í borgum í Fönikíu og Samaríu, heimsóttu þar kristna menn og sögðu þeim – öllum til mikillar gleði – að heiðingjar hefðu einnig snúist til trúar.
Therefore, being led by the church, they traveled through Phoenicia and Samaria, describing the conversion of the Gentiles. And they caused great joy among all the brothers.
4 Þegar þeir komu til Jerúsalem, var þeim vel tekið af postulunum, öldungunum og reyndar öllum söfnuðinum. Skýrðu þeir frá hverju Guð hafði komið til leiðar með starfi þeirra.
And when they had arrived in Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the Apostles and the elders, reporting what great things God had done with them.
5 Þá stóðu upp nokkrir menn, fyrrverandi farísear, og sögðu að allir heiðingjar, sem tækju kristna trú, yrðu að láta umskerast og hlýða lögum Móse í einu og öllu.
But some from the sect of the Pharisees, those who were believers, rose up saying, “It is necessary for them to be circumcised and to be instructed to keep the Law of Moses.”
6 Postularnir og öldungar safnaðarins, héldu eftir þetta annan fund og reyndu að fá niðurstöðu í málið.
And the Apostles and elders came together to take care of this matter.
7 Eftir langar og strangar umræður stóð Pétur upp og ávarpaði fundarmenn: „Bræður, ykkur er öllum ljóst að Guð valdi mig fyrir löngu úr ykkar hópi til að flytja heiðingjunum fagnaðarerindið, svo að þeir eignuðust trúna eins og við.
And after a great contention had taken place, Peter rose up and said to them: “Noble brothers, you know that, in recent days, God has chosen from among us, by my mouth, Gentiles to hear the word of the Gospel and to believe.
8 Guð, sem þekkir hjörtu mannanna, staðfesti það að hann tæki á móti heiðingjunum, með því að gefa þeim heilagan anda eins og okkur.
And God, who knows hearts, offered testimony, by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as to us.
9 Hann gerði engan greinarmun á þeim og okkur, því að hann hreinsaði líf þeirra með trúnni á sama hátt og líf okkar.
And he distinguished nothing between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
10 Ætlið þið nú að fara að leiðrétta Guð með því að leggja þá byrði á heiðingjana, sem hvorki við né forfeður okkar hafa megnað að bera?
Now therefore, why do you tempt God to impose a yoke upon the necks of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?
11 Trúið þið því ekki, eða hvað, að við frelsumst öll fyrir það sama: Fyrir óverðskuldaða náð Drottins Jesú?“
But by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, we believe in order to be saved, in the same manner also as them.”
12 Þegar enginn svaraði, tóku Barnabas og Páll að segja frá kraftaverkunum, sem Guð hafði látið þá vinna meðal heiðingjanna.
Then the entire multitude was silent. And they were listening to Barnabas and Paul, describing what great signs and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles through them.
13 Þegar þeir höfðu lokið máli sínu stóð Jakob upp og sagði: „Bræður, takið eftir.
And after they had been silent, James responded by saying: “Noble brothers, listen to me.
14 Nú hefur Pétur sagt ykkur frá því þegar Guð vitjaði heiðingjanna í fyrsta skipti og gerði nafn sitt dýrlegt meðal þeirra.
Simon has explained in what manner God first visited, so as to take from the Gentiles a people to his name.
15 Þetta afturhvarf heiðingjanna er í samræmi við það sem spámennirnir hafa sagt. Hlustið til dæmis á þennan kafla hjá Amosi:
And the words of the Prophets are in agreement with this, just as it was written:
16 Svo segir Drottinn: „Og ég mun snúa aftur og endurnýja sáttmálann við Davíð, sem rofinn var,
‘After these things, I will return, and I will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down. And I will rebuild its ruins, and I will raise it up,
17 svo að heiðingjarnir finni mig einnig – allir þeir sem nafn mitt hefur verið nefnt yfir.“
so that the rest of men may seek the Lord, along with all the nations over whom my name has been invoked, says the Lord, who does these things.’
To the Lord, his own work has been known from eternity. (aiōn g165)
19 Samkvæmt því er úrskurður minn þessi: Við skulum ekki krefjast þess af heiðingjunum, sem snúa sér til Guðs, að þeir haldi lög Gyðinga.
Because of this, I judge that those who were converted to God from among the Gentiles are not to be disturbed,
20 Þó skulum við senda þeim bréf og biðja þá að neyta ekki kjöts, sem fórnað hefur verið til skurðgoða. Biðjum þá einnig að forðast allt kynsvall, neyslu blóðs og kjöts af dýrum, sem hafa kafnað.
but instead that we write to them, that they should keep themselves from the defilement of idols, and from fornication, and from whatever has been suffocated, and from blood.
21 Enda hefur verið predikað gegn þessu í samkomuhúsum Gyðinga í hverri borg, hvern helgidag, öld eftir öld.“
For Moses, from ancient times, has had in each city those who preach him in the synagogues, where he is read on every Sabbath.”
22 Þá kusu postularnir, öldungarnir og allur söfnuðurinn fulltrúa til að senda til Antíokkíu, með þeim Páli og Barnabasi, til að kunngjöra þessa niðurstöðu. Þeir sem valdir voru til ferðarinnar voru Júdas (einnig kallaður Barsabbas) og Sílas, en þeir voru í miklum metum hjá söfnuðinum.
Then it pleased the Apostles and elders, with the whole Church, to choose men from among them, and to send to Antioch, with Paul and Barnabas, and Judas, who was surnamed Barsabbas, and Silas, preeminent men among the brothers,
23 Bréfið, sem þeir höfðu meðferðis, var þannig: „Frá: Postulum, öldungum, og trúsystkinum í Jerúsalem. Til: Safnaðanna í Antíokkíu, Sýrlandi og Kilikíu, sem áður voru heiðingjar. Komið þið sæl!
what was written by their own hands: “The Apostles and elders, brothers, to those who are at Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, brothers from the Gentiles, greetings.
24 Okkur hefur skilist að trúaðir menn, sem héðan hafa komið, hafi valdið ykkur kvíða og dregið í efa að þið væruð hólpin. Við viljum hér með segja ykkur að þessir menn voru ekki á okkar vegum.
Since we have heard that some, going out from among us, have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, to whom we gave no commandment,
25 Við höfum rætt málið og komist að sameiginlegri niðurstöðu. Því fannst okkur rétt að senda ykkur þessa tvo fulltrúa okkar með bræðrunum elskuðu, Barnabasi og Páli,
it pleased us, being assembled as one, to choose men and to send them to you, with our most beloved Barnabas and Paul:
26 sem hafa lagt líf sitt í hættu fyrir Jesú Krist.
men who have handed over their lives on behalf of the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
27 Þessir menn – Júdas og Sílas – munu kunngjöra ykkur svar okkar við spurningu ykkar.
Therefore, we have sent Judas and Silas, who themselves also will, with the spoken word, reaffirm to you the same things.
28 Okkur ásamt heilögum anda fannst rétt að íþyngja ykkur ekki meira en nauðsynlegt er með lögum Gyðinga. Þið ættuð þó að forðast að neyta – í fyrsta lagi kjöts af dýrum, sem fórnað hefur verið skurðgoðum, í öðru lagi kjöts af dýrum, sem hafa kafnað, en ekki látið blæða út, og í þriðja lagi ættuð þið að forðast allt kynsvall. Ef þið varist þetta, þá mun ykkur vegna vel.“
For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to impose no further burden upon you, other than these necessary things:
that you abstain from things immolated to idols, and from blood, and from what has been suffocated, and from fornication. You will do well to keep yourselves from these things. Farewell.”
30 Sendiboðarnir fjórir lögðu þegar af stað til Antíokkíu og er þangað kom kölluðu þeir saman allan söfnuðinn, og afhentu bréfið.
And so, having been dismissed, they went down to Antioch. And gathering the multitude together, they delivered the epistle.
31 Þegar bréfið hafði verið lesið upp urðu menn mjög glaðir.
And when they had read it, they were gladdened by this consolation.
32 Júdas og Sílas, sem báðir voru góðir predikarar, hvöttu síðan lærisveinana með mörgum orðum og styrktu trú þeirra.
But Judas and Silas, being also prophets themselves, consoled the brothers with many words, and they were strengthened.
33 Þeir stóðu við í nokkra daga en héldu síðan aftur til Jerúsalem. Þeir fluttu með sér kveðjur og þakklæti til þeirra sem höfðu sent þá.
Then, after spending some more time there, they were dismissed with peace, by the brothers, to those who had sent them.
34 Páll og Barnabas urðu eftir í Antíokkíu og aðstoðuðu með predikun og kennslu.
But it seemed good to Silas to remain there. So Judas alone departed to Jerusalem.
And Paul and Barnabas remained at Antioch, with many others, teaching and evangelizing the Word of the Lord.
36 Nokkrum dögum síðar stakk Páll upp á því við Barnabas að þeir færu aftur til Litlu-Asíu og heimsæktu borgirnar, sem þeir höfðu predikað í, til þess að sjá hvernig söfnuðunum vegnaði.
Then, after some days, Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us return to visit the brothers throughout all the cities in which we have preached the Word of the Lord, to see how they are.”
37 Barnabas var sammála og vildi taka Jóhannes Markús með.
And Barnabas wanted to take John, who was surnamed Mark, with them also.
38 Það gat Páll ekki fallist á, því að Jóhannes hafði áður yfirgefið þá í Pamfýlíu.
But Paul was saying that he ought not to be received, since he withdrew from them at Pamphylia, and he had not gone with them in the work.
39 Um þetta þrættu þeir mikið og héldu síðan hvor sína leið. Barnabas tók Markús með sér og sigldi til Kýpur,
And there occurred a dissension, to such an extent that they departed from one another. And Barnabas, indeed taking Mark, sailed to Cyprus.
40 en Páll valdi Sílas að samferðamanni og fór síðan, eftir að söfnuðurinn hafði beðið fyrir þeim, til Sýrlands og Kilikíu til að uppörva söfnuðina þar.
Yet truly, Paul, choosing Silas, set out, being delivered by the brothers to the grace of God.
And he traveled through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the Churches, instructing them to keep the precepts of the Apostles and the elders.
