1 Fiam! ha kezes lettél a te barátodért, és kezedet adván, kötelezted magadat másért:
My son, if thou art become surety for thy neighbour, if thou hast struck thy hands for a stranger —
2 Szádnak beszédei által estél tőrbe, megfogattattál a te szádnak beszédivel.
Thou art snared by the words of thy mouth, thou art caught by the words of thy mouth —
3 Ezt míveld azért fiam, és mentsd ki magadat, mert a te felebarátodnak kezébe jutottál; eredj, alázd meg magadat, és kényszerítsd felebarátodat.
Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, seeing thou art come into the hand of thy neighbour; go, humble thyself, and urge thy neighbour.
4 Még álmot se engedj szemeidnek, se szunnyadást szemöldökidnek,
Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.
5 Szabadítsd ki magadat, mint a zerge a vadász kezéből, és mint a madár a madarásznak kezéből.
Deliver thyself as a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 Eredj a hangyához, te rest, nézd meg az ő útait, és légy bölcs!
Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise;
7 A kinek nincs vezére, igazgatója, vagy ura,
Which having no chief, overseer, or ruler,
8 Nyárban szerzi meg az ő kenyerét, aratáskor gyűjti eledelét.
Provideth her bread in the summer, and gatherest her food in the harvest.
9 Oh te rest, meddig fekszel? mikor kelsz fel a te álmodból?
How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
10 Még egy kis álom, még egy kis szunnyadás, még egy kis kéz-összefonás, hogy pihenjek;
'Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep' —
11 Így jő el, mint az útonjáró, a te szegénységed, és a te szűkölködésed, mint a paizsos férfiú!
So shall thy poverty come as a runner, and thy want as an armed man.
12 Haszontalan ember, hamis férfiú, a ki álnok szájjal jár,
A base person, a man of iniquity, is he that walketh with a froward mouth;
13 A ki hunyorgat szemeivel; lábaival is szól, és ujjaival jelt ád.
That winketh with his eyes, that scrapeth with his feet, that pointeth with his fingers;
14 Álnokság van az ő szívében, gonoszt forral minden időben, háborúságot indít.
Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth evil continually; he soweth discord.
15 Annakokáért hirtelen eljő az ő nyomorúsága, gyorsan megrontatik, s nem lesz gyógyulása.
Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; on a sudden shall he be broken, and that without remedy.
16 E hat dolgot gyűlöli az Úr, és hét dolog útálat az ő lelkének:
There are six things which the LORD hateth, yea, seven which are an abomination unto Him:
17 A kevély szemek, a hazug nyelv, és az ártatlan vért ontó kezek,
Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood;
18 Az álnok gondolatokat forraló elme, a gonoszra sietséggel futó lábak,
A heart that deviseth wicked thoughts, feet that are swift in running to evil;
19 A hazugságlehelő hamis tanú, és a ki szerez háborúságokat az atyafiak között!
A false witness that breatheth out lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
20 Őrizd meg, fiam, atyád parancsolatját, és anyád tanítását el ne hagyd.
My son, keep the commandment of thy father, and forsake not the teaching of thy mother;
21 Kösd azokat szívedre mindenkor, fűzd a nyakadba.
Bind them continually upon thy heart, tie them about thy neck.
22 Valahová mégysz, vezérel téged, mikor aluszol, őriz téged, mikor felserkensz, beszélget te veled.
When thou walkest, it shall lead thee, when thou liest down, it shall watch over thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
23 Mert szövétnek a parancsolat, és a tudomány világosság, és életnek úta a tanító-feddések.
For the commandment is a lamp, and the teaching is light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life;
24 Hogy a gonosz asszonytól téged megőrizzenek, az idegen asszony nyelvének hizelkedésétől.
To keep thee from the evil woman, from the smoothness of the alien tongue.
25 Ne kivánd az ő szépségét szivedben, és meg ne fogjon téged szemöldökeivel;
Lust not after her beauty in thy heart; neither let her captivate thee with her eyelids.
26 Mert a parázna asszony miatt jut az ember egy darab kenyérre, és más férfi felesége drága életet vadász!
For on account of a harlot a man is brought to a loaf of bread, but the adulteress hunteth for the precious life.
27 Vehet-é valaki tüzet az ő kebelébe, hogy ruhái meg ne égnének?
Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?
28 Vagy járhat-é valaki elevenszénen, hogy lábai meg ne égnének?
Or can one walk upon hot coals, and his feet not be scorched?
29 Így van, valaki bemegy felebarátjának feleségéhez, nem marad büntetlen, valaki illeti azt!
So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not go unpunished.
30 Nem útálják meg a lopót, ha lop az ő kivánságának betöltésére, mikor éhezik;
Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;
31 És ha rajta kapatik, hétannyit kell adnia, az ő házának minden marháját érette adhatja;
But if he be found, he must restore sevenfold, he must give all the substance of his house.
32 A ki pedig asszonynyal paráználkodik, bolond; a ki magát el akarja veszteni, az cselekszi ezt!
He that committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding; he doeth it that would destroy his own soul.
33 Vereséget és gyalázatot nyer, és az ő gyalázatja el nem töröltetik.
Wounds and dishonour shall he get, and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
34 Mert a féltékenység a férfiú haragja, és nem cselekszik kegyelmességgel a bosszúállásnak napján.
For jealousy is the rage of a man, and he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
35 Nem gondol semmi váltsággal, nem nyugszik meg rajta, még ha nagy sok ajándékot adsz is néki.
He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
