1 Kivánatosb a jó hírnév nagy gazdagságnál; ezüstnél és aranynál a kedvesség jobb.
A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.
2 A gazdag és szegény összetalálkoznak, mindkettőt pedig az Úr szerzi.
The rich and the poor meet together — the LORD is the maker of them all.
3 Az eszes meglátja a bajt és elrejti magát; a bolondok pedig neki mennek és kárát vallják.
A prudent man seeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the thoughtless pass on, and are punished.
4 Az alázatosságnak bére az Úr félelme, gazdagság és tisztesség és élet.
The reward of humility is the fear of the LORD, even riches, and honour, and life.
5 Tövisek és tőrök vannak a gonosznak útában; a ki megőrzi a maga lelkét, távol jár azoktól.
Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward; he that keepeth his soul holdeth himself far from them.
6 Tanítsd a gyermeket az ő útjának módja szerint; még mikor megvénhedik is, el nem távozik attól.
Train up a child in the way he should go, and even when he is old, he will not depart from it.
7 A gazdag a szegényeken uralkodik, és szolgája a kölcsönvevő a kölcsönadónak.
The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
8 A ki vet álnokságot, arat nyomorúságot; és az ő haragjának vesszeje megtöretik.
He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity; and the rod of his wrath shall fail.
9 Az irgalmas szemű ember megáldatik, mert adott az ő kenyeréből a szegénynek.
He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.
10 Űzd el a csúfolót, és elmegy a háborgás is, és megszünik a patvarkodás és a szidalmazás.
Cast out the scorner, and contention will go out; yea, strife and shame will cease.
11 A ki szereti a szívnek tisztaságát, beszéde kedvesség: annak barátja a király.
He that loveth pureness of heart, that hath grace in his lips, the king shall be his friend.
12 Az Úrnak szemei megőrzik a tudományt; a hitetlennek beszédét pedig felforgatja.
The eyes of the LORD preserve him that hath knowledge, but He overthroweth the words of the faithless man.
13 A rest azt mondja: oroszlán van ottkin, az utczák közepén megölettetném.
The sluggard saith: 'There is a lion without; I shall be slain in the streets.'
14 Mély verem az idegen asszonyoknak szája; a kire haragszik az Úr, oda esik.
The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein.
15 A gyermek elméjéhez köttetett a bolondság; de a fenyítés vesszeje messze elűzi ő tőle azt.
Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
16 A ki elnyomja a szegényt, hogy szaporítsa az ő marháját; a ki ád a gazdagnak: végre szűkölködésre jut.
One may oppress the poor, yet will their gain increase; one may give to the rich, yet will want come.
17 Hajtsd füledet, és hallgasd a bölcseknek beszédeit; és a te elmédet figyelmeztesd az én tudományomra.
Incline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thy heart unto my knowledge.
18 Mert gyönyörűséges lesz, ha megtartod azokat szívedben; legyenek együtt állandók a te ajkaidon!
For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; let them be established altogether upon thy lips.
19 Hogy az Úrban legyen a te bizodalmad, arra tanítottalak ma téged, igen, téged.
That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made them known to thee this day, even to thee.
20 Nem írtam-é néked drága szép tanulságokat, tanácsokban és tudományban?
Have not I written unto thee excellent things of counsels and knowledge;
21 Hogy tudtodra adjam néked az igazság beszédinek bizonyos voltát: hogy igaz beszédet vígy válaszul elküldőidnek.
That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth, that thou mightest bring back words of truth to them that send thee?
22 Ne rabold ki a szegényt, mert szegény ő; és meg ne rontsd a nyomorultat a kapuban;
Rob not the weak, because he is weak, neither crush the poor in the gate;
23 Mert az Úr forgatja azoknak ügyét, és az ő kirablóik életét elragadja.
For the LORD will plead their cause, and despoil of life those that despoil them.
24 Ne tarts barátságot a haragossal, és a dühösködővel ne menj;
Make no friendship with a man that is given to anger; and with a wrathful man thou shalt not go;
25 Hogy el ne tanuld az ő útait, és tőrt ne keress tennen magadnak.
Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.
26 Ne légy azok közt, a kik kézbe csapnak, a kik adósságért kezeskednek.
Be thou not of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts;
27 Ha nincs néked miből megadnod; miért vegye el a te ágyadat te alólad?
If thou hast not wherewith to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?
28 Ne bontsd el a régi határt, melyet csináltak a te eleid.
Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.
29 Láttál-é az ő dolgában szorgalmatos embert? A királyok előtt álland, nem marad meg az alsó rendűek között.
Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.
