1 Kiálts csak! Van-é, a ki felelne néked? A szentek közül melyikhez fordulsz?
Call now, is there any who will answer thee? And to which of the holy ones will thou turn?
2 Mert a bolondot boszúság öli meg, az együgyűt pedig buzgóság veszti el.
For vexation kills the foolish man, and jealousy slays the silly one.
3 Láttam, hogy egy bolond gyökerezni kezdett, de nagy hamar megátkoztam szép hajlékát.
I have seen the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation.
4 Fiai messze estek a szabadulástól: a kapuban megrontatnak, mert nincs, a ki kimentse őket.
His sons are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate. Neither is there any to deliver them,
5 A mit learatnak néki, az éhező eszi meg, a töviskerítésből is elviszi azt, kincseiket tőrvetők nyelik el.
whose harvest the hungry eat up, and takes it even out of the thorns, and the snare gapes for their substance.
6 Mert nem porból támad a veszedelem s nem földből sarjad a nyomorúság!
For affliction does not come forth from the dust, nor does trouble spring out of the ground,
7 Hanem nyomorúságra születik az ember, a mint felfelé szállnak a parázs szikrái.
but man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward.
8 Azért én a Mindenhatóhoz folyamodnám, az Istenre bíznám ügyemet.
But as for me, I would seek to God. And to God I would commit my cause,
9 A ki nagy, végére mehetetlen dolgokat művel, és csudákat, a miknek száma nincsen.
who does great things and unsearchable, marvelous things without number,
10 A ki esőt ad a földnek színére, és a mezőkre vizet bocsát.
who gives rain upon the earth, and sends waters upon the fields,
11 Hogy az alázatosokat felmagasztalja, és a gyászolókat szabadulással vidámítsa.
so that he sets up on high those who are low, and those who mourn are exalted to safety.
12 A ki semmivé teszi a csalárdok gondolatait, hogy szándékukat kezeik véghez ne vihessék.
He frustrates the devices of the crafty so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.
13 A ki megfogja a bölcseket az ő csalárdságukban, és a hamisak tanácsát hiábavalóvá teszi.
He takes the wise in their own craftiness, and the counsel of the cunning is carried headlong.
14 Nappal sötétségre bukkannak, és délben is tapogatva járnak, mint éjszaka.
They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope at noonday as in the night.
15 A ki megszabadítja a fegyvertől, az ő szájoktól, és az erősnek kezéből a szegényt;
But he saves from the sword of their mouth, even the needy from the hand of the mighty.
16 Hogy legyen reménysége a szegénynek, és a hamisság befogja az ő száját.
So a poor man has hope, and iniquity stops her mouth.
17 Ímé, boldog ember az, a kit Isten megdorgál; azért a Mindenhatónak büntetését meg ne utáljad!
Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects. Therefore do not despise thou the chastening of the Almighty.
18 Mert ő megsebez, de be is kötöz, összezúz, de kezei meg is gyógyítanak.
For he injures, and binds up. He wounds, and his hands make whole.
19 Hat bajodból megszabadít, és a hetedikben sem illet a veszedelem téged.
He will deliver thee in six troubles. Yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.
20 Az éhínségben megment téged a haláltól, és a háborúban a fegyveres kezektől.
In famine he will redeem thee from death, and in war from the power of the sword.
21 A nyelvek ostora elől rejtve leszel, és nem kell félned, hogy a pusztulás rád következik.
Thou shall be hid from the scourge of the tongue. Neither shall thou be afraid of destruction when it comes.
22 A pusztulást és drágaságot neveted, és a fenevadaktól sem félsz.
At destruction and dearth thou shall laugh, nor shall thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.
23 Mert a mezőn való kövekkel is frigyed lesz, és a mezei vad is békességben lesz veled.
For thou shall be in league with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
24 Majd megtudod, hogy békességben lesz a te sátorod, s ha megvizsgálod a te hajlékodat, nem találsz benne hiányt.
And thou shall know that thy tent is in peace, and thou shall visit thy fold, and shall miss nothing.
25 Majd megtudod, hogy a te magod megszaporodik, és a te sarjadékod, mint a mezőn a fű.
Thou shall know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth.
26 Érett korban térsz a koporsóba, a mint a maga idején takaríttatik be a learatott gabona.
Thou shall come to thy grave in a full age, like a shock of grain comes in its season.
27 Ímé ezt kutattuk mi ki, így van ez. Hallgass erre, jegyezd meg magadnak.
