1 A prédikátornak, Dávid fiának, Jeruzsálem királyának beszédei.
The wordis of Ecclesiastes, sone of Dauid, the kyng of Jerusalem.
2 Felette nagy hiábavalóság, azt mondja a prédikátor; felette nagy hiábavalóság! Minden hiábavalóság!
The vanyte of vanytees, seide Ecclesiastes; the vanyte of vanytees, and alle thingis ben vanite.
3 Micsoda haszna van az embernek minden ő munkájában, melylyel munkálkodik a nap alatt?
What hath a man more of alle his trauel, bi which he traueilith vndur the sunne?
4 Egyik nemzetség elmegy, és a másik eljő; a föld pedig mindörökké megmarad.
Generacioun passith awei, and generacioun cometh; but the erthe stondith with outen ende.
5 És a nap feltámad, és elnyugszik a nap; és az ő helyére siet, a hol ő ismét feltámad.
The sunne risith, and goith doun, and turneth ayen to his place;
6 Siet délre, és átmegy észak felé; körbe-körbe siet a szél, és a maga keringéséhez visszatér a szél.
and there it risith ayen, and cumpassith bi the south, and turneth ayen to the north. The spirit cumpassynge alle thingis goith `in cumpas, and turneth ayen in to hise cerclis.
7 Minden folyóvíz siet a tengerbe; mindazáltal a tenger mégis meg nem telik: akármicsoda helyre a folyóvizek siessenek, ugyanazon helyre térnek vissza.
Alle floodis entren in to the see, and the see fletith not ouer the markis set of God; the floodis turnen ayen to the place fro whennus tho comen forth, that tho flowe eft.
8 Minden dolgok mint fáradoznak, senki ki nem mondhatja; nem elégednék meg a szem látván, sem be nem teljesednék hallásával a fül.
Alle thingis ben hard; a man may not declare tho thingis bi word; the iye is not fillid bi siyt, nether the eere is fillid bi hering.
9 A mi volt, ugyanaz, a mi ezután is lesz, és a mi történt, ugyanaz, a mi ezután is történik; és semmi nincs új dolog a nap alatt.
What is that thing that was, that that schal come? What is that thing that is maad, that that schal be maad?
10 Van valami, a miről mondják: nézd ezt, új ez; régen volt már száz esztendőkön át, melyek mi előttünk voltak.
No thing vndir the sunne is newe, nether ony man may seie, Lo! this thing is newe; for now it yede bifore in worldis, that weren bifore vs.
11 Nincs emlékezet az előbbiekről; azonképen az utolsó dolgokról is, melyek jövendők, nem lesz emlékezet azoknál, a kik azután lesznek.
Mynde of the formere thingis is not, but sotheli nether thenkyng of tho thingis, that schulen come afterward, schal be at hem that schulen come in the last tyme.
12 Én prédikátor, királya voltam Izráelnek Jeruzsálemben.
I Ecclesiastes was king of Israel in Jerusalem;
13 És adám az én elmémet mindazok vizsgálására és bölcsen való tudakozására, melyek lesznek az ég alatt. Ez gonosz hiábavaló foglalatosság, melyet adott Isten az emberek fiainak, hogy gyötrődjenek vele.
and Y purposide in my soule to seke and enserche wiseli of alle thingis, that ben maad vndur the sunne. God yaf this werste ocupacioun to the sones of men, that thei schulden be ocupied therynne.
14 Láttam minden dolgokat, melyek lesznek a nap alatt, és ímé minden csak hiábavalóság, és a léleknek gyötrelme!
I siy alle thingis that ben maad vndur the sunne, and lo! alle thingis ben vanyte and turment of spirit.
15 Az egyenetlen meg nem egyenesíthető, és a fogyatkozás meg nem számlálható.
Weiward men ben amendid of hard; and the noumbre of foolis is greet with outen ende.
16 Szóltam az én elmémmel, mondván: ímé, én nagygyá lettem, és gyűjtöttem bölcseséget mindazok felett, a kik fők voltak én előttem Jeruzsálemben, és az én elmém bőven látott bölcseséget és tudományt!
I spak in myn herte, and Y seide, Lo! Y am made greet, and Y passide in wisdom alle men, that weren bifore me in Jerusalem; and my soule siy many thingis wiseli, and Y lernede.
17 Adtam annakfelette az én elmémet a bölcseségnek tudására, és az esztelenségnek és bolondságnak megtudására. Megtudtam, hogy ez is a lélek gyötrelme.
And Y yaf myn herte, that Y schulde knowe prudence and doctryn, and errours and foli. And Y knew that in these thingis also was trauel and turment of spirit;
18 Mert a bölcsességnek sokaságában sok búsulás van, és valaki öregbíti a tudományt, öregbíti a gyötrelmet.
for in myche wisdom is myche indignacioun, and he that encressith kunnyng, encreessith also trauel.
