1 Fiam, őrizd meg mondásaimat és parancsaimat rejtsd el magadnál.
My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.
2 Őrizd meg parancsaimat, hogy élj és tanomat, mint szemeid fényét.
Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.
3 Kösd azokat ujjaidra, írjad azokat szíved táblájára.
Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.
4 Mondd a bölcsességnek: nővérem vagy, s rokonnak nevezd az értelmességet;
Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman:
5 hogy megőrizzen idegen asszonytól, idegen nőtől, ki simává tette beszédjét.
That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.
6 Mert házam ablakán, rácsozatomon át tekintettem ki.
For at the window of my house I looked through my casement,
7 Ekkor láttam az együgyűek között, észre vettem a fiúk közt egy esztelen ifjút:
And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,
8 elhalad az utczán annak szöglete mellett és a házához menő úton lépdel,
Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,
9 szürkületkor, a nap estéjén, éj sötétségében és homályban.
In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:
10 S íme elejébe egy asszony, parázna ruhájú és álnok szívű;
And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.
11 zajongó ő és csapongó, házában nem nyugosznak lábai:
(She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:
12 egyszer az utczán, másszor piaczokon, minden szöglet mellett leselkedik.
Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)
13 Megragadja őt, megcsókolja őt, szemérmetlen arczczal mondja neki:
So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,
14 Békeáldozatokkal tartozom, ma megfizettem fogadalmaimat;
I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.
15 azért jöttem ki elédbe, hogy fölkeressem színedet, és megtaláltalak.
Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.
16 Takarókkal takartam le nyoszolyámat, egyiptomi tarka szövettel;
I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt.
17 behintettem fekvőhelyemet myrrhával, aloéval s fahéjjal.
I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
18 Jöjj! ittasodjunk szeretettel reggelig, enyelegjünk szerelemben.
Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves.
19 Mert nincs otthon a férfi, útra ment messzire;
For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:
20 a pénzes zacskót kezébe vette, holdtölte napjára fog haza jönni.
He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed.
21 Elhajlította őt sok rábeszélésével, ajkai simaságával eltántorítja.
With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.
22 Megy utána hirtelen, mint ökör, mely a levágásra megyen, s mint békóban fenyítéséhez az oktalan;
He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;
23 mígnem nyíl fúrja át máját, a mint madár siet a tőrhöz, s nem tudja, hogy életébe kerül.
Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.
24 Most tehát, fiúk, hallgassatok reám s figyeljetek szájam mondásaira:
Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.
25 ne térjen az ő utjaira szíved, ne tévelyegj ösvényein;
Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.
26 mert sokan vannak a megöltek, kiket elejtett, és számosak mind a meggyilkoltjai.
For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.
