1 Volt Józsua halála után, megkérdezték Izraél fiai az Örökkévalót, mondván: Ki vonuljon közülünk először a kanaáni ellen, hogy harczoljon vele?

Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked Yhwh, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

2 Mondta az Örökkévaló: Jehúda vonuljon; íme kezébe adtam az országot.

And Yhwh said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

3 S mondta Jehúda Simeónnak, az ő testvérének: Vonulj velem sorsomba, hadd harczoljunk a kanaánival, akkor megyek majd én is te veled sorsodba. És ment vele Simeón.

And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

4 Fölvonult Jehúda, és kezükbe adta az Örökkévaló a kanaánit és a perizzit; és megverték őket Bézekben – tízezer embert.

And Judah went up; And Yhwh delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

5 Ott találták Adóni-Bézeket Bézekben és harczoltak ellene; és megverték a kanaánit és a perizzit.

And they found Adoni–bezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

6 És megfutamodott Adóni-Bézek, és üldözték őt; megfogták őt és levágták kezeinek és lábainak hüvelykujjait.

But Adoni–bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

7 Akkor mondta Adóni-Bézek: Hetven király – kezük és lábuk hüvelykujja levágva – szedegettek asztalom alatt; a hogy én tettem, úgy fizetett nekem Isten. És bevitték őt Jeruzsálembe, és meghalt ott.

And Adoni–bezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

8 Akkor harczoltak Jehúda fiai Jeruzsálem ellen, bevették azt és megverték a kard élével; a várost pedig tűzbe borították.

Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

9 Azután lementek Jehúda fiai harczolni a kanaánival a hegység, a Délvidék és az alföld lakójával.

And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.

10 Ment Jehúda a kánaáni ellen, ki Chebrónban lakott – Chebrón neve pedig azelőtt Kirjat-Arbá volt – és megverték Sésájt, Achímánt és Talmájt.

And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: ( now the name of Hebron before was Kirjath–arba: ) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

11 Onnan ment Debír lakói ellen; Debír neve pedig azelőtt Kirját-Széfer volt.

And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjath–sepher:

12 És mondta Káléb: A ki megveri Kirját-Széfert és beveszi, annak oda adom leányomat, Akhszát, nőül.

And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjath–sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.

13 És bevette Otniél, Kenáz fia, Káléb fiatalabb testvére; és oda adta neki leányát, Akhszát, nőül.

And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

14 S történt, mikor odajött, rábeszélte, hogy kérjen atyjától mezőt; és lesiklott a szamárról. És mondta neki Káléb: Mi lelt?

And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her donkey; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?

15 Mondta neki: Adj nekem áldást, mert a délvidéki földre adtál engem, adjál hát nekem vízkútfőket. Erre adta neki Káléb a felső kútfőket és az alsó kútfőket.

And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

16 A kénitának, Mózes ipjának fiai pedig fölmentek a pálmák városából Jehúda fiaival együtt Jehúda pusztájába, mely Arádtól délre van; mentek és maradtak a néppel.

And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.

17 S ment Jehúda Simeónnal, az ő testvérével, és megverték a kanaánit, Czefát lakóját, elpusztították és elnevezték a várost Chormának.

And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.

18 És bevette Jehúda Azzát és határát, Askelónt és határát, meg Ekrónt és határát.

Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof.

19 És volt az Örökkévaló Jehúdával, és elfoglalta a hegységet, mert nem bírta kiűzni a völgy lakóit, mert vasszekerük volt nekik.

And Yhwh was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

20 És adták Kálébnek Chebrónt, a mint mondta volt Mózes; és kiűzte onnan Anák három fiát.

And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.

21 A jebúszit pedig, Jeruzsálem lakóját, nem űzték ki Benjámin fiai; így maradt a jebúszi Benjámin fiaival Jeruzsálemben mind e mai napig.

And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

22 Vonultak a József házabeliek, ők is, Bét-Élbe és az Örökkévaló velük volt.

And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth–el: And Yhwh was with them.

23 Kikémleltették a József házabeliek Bét-Élt; a városnak neve pedig azelőtt Lúz volt.

And the house of Joseph sent to descry Beth–el. ( Now the name of the city before was Luz.)

24 És láttak az őrök egy embert kijönni a városból, és mondták neki: Mutasd meg nekünk, kérlek, a város bejáratát és mi majd szeretetet cselekszünk veled.

And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.

25 Megmutatta nekik a város bejáratát, és megverték a várost a kard élével; az embert pedig és egész családját elbocsátották.

And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.

26 S elment az ember a chittiták földjére, épített várost és elnevezte Lúznak; ez a neve mind e mai napig.

And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.

27 Nem űzte ki Menasse Bét-Seánt és leányvárosait, Táanákhot és leányvárosait, meg Dór lakóit és leányvárosait, Jibleám lakóit és leányvárosait, sem Meggidó lakóit és leányvárosait; és belenyugodott a kanaáni, hogy maradjon ebben az országban.

Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Beth–shean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

28 Történt pedig, mikor megerősödött Izraél, alattvalóvá tette a kanaánit, de kiűzni nem űzte ki.

And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.

29 Efraim nem űzte ki a kanaánit, ki Gézerben lakott; így maradt közte a kanaáni Gézerben.

Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

30 Zebúlún nem űzte ki Kitrón lakóit, sem Náhalól lakóit; így maradt közte a kanaáni, és alattvalókká lettek.

Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.

31 Ásér nem űzte ki Akkó lakóit, sem Czídón lakóit, meg Achlábot, Akhzíbot, Chelbát, Afíkot és Rechóbot.

Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:

32 Így lakott az Áséri a kanaáni, az ország lakói között, mert nem űzte ki.

But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.

33 Naftáli nem űzte ki Bét-Sémes lakóit, sem Bét-Anát lakóit, és így lakott ő a kanaáni, az ország lakói közt; Bét-Sémes és Bét-Anát lakói pedig lettek nekik alattvalóikká.

Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth–shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth–anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth–shemesh and of Beth–anath became tributaries unto them.

34 És szorította az emóri Dán fiait a hegységbe, mert nem engedte leszállni a völgybe.

And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:

35 S belenyugodott az emóri, hogy lakjon Chéresz hegyén, Ajjálónban és Sáalebímban; de nehéz lett József házának keze, és alattvalókká lettek.

But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.

36 Az emóri határa pedig Akrabbím hágójától, a Sziklán felül.

And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
