Jónás 1

1 Lett az Örökkévaló igéje Jónához, Amittáj fiához, mondván:

NOW THE WORD of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying:

2 Kelj föl, menj Ninivébe, a nagy városba és hirdess felőle; mert gonoszságuk fölszállt elém.

'Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim against it; for their wickedness is come up before Me.'

3 Erre fölkelt Jóna, hogy megszökjék Tarsísba az Örökkévaló elől lement Jáfóba, talált egy Tarsísba menő hajót, megadta a díját és beléje szállt, hogy oda menjen velük Tarsísba az Örökkévaló elől.

But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish, from the presence of the LORD.

4 De az Örökkévaló nagy szelet vetett a tengerre, úgy hogy nagy vihar lett a tengeren, s már azt gondolták, hogy a hajótörést szenved.

But the LORD hurled a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

5 Megfélemlettek a hajósok, kiáltottak kiki a maga istenéhez, és bevetették a hajón levő tárgyakat a tengerbe, hogy könnyítsenek magukon; Jóna pedig lement a hajó hátuljába, lefeküdt és mélyen aludt.

And the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god; and they cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it unto them. But Jonah was gone down into the innermost parts of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

6 Ekkor közeledett hozzá a kormányos mester és mondá neki: mi van veled, hogy mélyen alszol? Kelj föl, szólítsd föl Istenedet, hátha ügyet vet ránk az Isten és nem veszünk el.

So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him: 'What meanest thou that thou sleepest? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.'

7 Erre szóltak egyik a másikához: Jertek, vessünk sorsokat, hogy megtudjuk, kinek dolgáért ér minket a veszedelem. Sorsokat vetettek és reá esett a sors Jónára.

And they said every one to his fellow: 'Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us.' So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

8 És szóltak hozzá: Mondd meg, kérlek, nekünk, kinek dolgáén ért minket a veszedelem? Mi a mesterséged és honnan jössz, mi az országod és miféle nép közül való vagy?

Then said they unto him: 'Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us: what is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?'

9 Szólt hozzájuk: Heber vagyok s az Örökkévalót, az egek Istenét félem, a ki teremtette a tengert és a szárazföldet.

And he said unto them: 'I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, who hath made the sea and the dry land.'

10 És féltek az emberek nagy félelemmel és szóltak hozzája: Ugyan mit is tettél? Mert tudták az emberek, hogy az Örökkévaló elől akar megszökni, mert megmondta nekik.

Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him: 'What is this that thou hast done?' For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.

11 És szóltak hozzá: Mit tegyünk veled, hogy elcsendesedjék a tenger körülöttünk? Mert a tenger egyre jobban viharzott.

Then said they unto him: 'What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us?' for the sea grew more and more tempestuous.

12 Szólt hozzájuk: Fogjatok engem és vessetek a tengerbe, s majd elcsendesedik a tenger körülöttetek; mert tudom, hogy az én dolgomért jött reátok: a nagy vihar.

And he said unto them: 'Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you; for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.'

13 És erőlködtek az emberek, hogy visszafordítsák a szárazföldre, de nem bírták; mert a tenger egyre jobban viharzott körülöttük.

Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not; for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.

14 Ekkor szólították az Örökkévalót és mondták: Oh Örökkévaló, ne vesszünk el, kérlek, ez ember lelkéért, s ne háríts reánk ártatlan vért; mert te, Örökkévaló, ahogy akartad, úgy cselekedtél!

Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said: 'We beseech Thee, O LORD, we beseech Thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood; for Thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased Thee.'

15 Erre fogták Jónát s bevetették a tengerbe; s elállt a tenger háborgásától.

So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging.

16 És félték az emberek nagy félelemmel az Örökkévalót s áldoztak áldozatot az Örökkévalónak, és fogadásokat tettek.

Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.

17 De az Örökkévaló nagy halat rendelt, hogy elnyelje Jónát; és volt Jóna a halnak beleiben három napig és három éjjelig.

And the LORD prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
