1 Mózes 23
1 És volt Sárának élete: százhuszonhét év; ezek Sára életévei.
Sarah lived to be 127,
2 És meghalt Sára Kirjász-Árbában, az Hebrón, Kánaán országában; és eljött Ábrahám, hogy gyászolja Sárát és sirassa.
and then she died at Kiriath-arba (or Hebron) in the land of Canaan. Abraham went in to mourn her death and to weep over her.
3 És fölkelt Ábrahám az ő halottja mellől és szólt Chész fiaihoz, mondván:
Then Abraham got up from beside his wife's body and went to talk with the leaders of the Hittites.
4 Idegen és lakó vagyok és nálatok, adjatok nekem sírnak való birtokot nálatok, hadd temessem el halottamat magam elől.
“I am a foreigner, a stranger living among you,” he said. “Please let me buy a burial site so I can bury my dead wife.”
5 És feleltek Chész fiai Ábrahámnak, mondván neki:
The Hittites answered Abraham, telling him,
6 Hallgass meg minket, Uram! Isten fejedelme vagy te mi közöttünk, sírjaink legkiválóbbjába temesd el halottadat; senki közülünk sem fogja megvonni az ő sírját te tőled, hogy eltemessed a te halottadat.
“Listen, my lord, you are a highly-respected prince among us. Choose the very best of our burial sites to bury your dead. None of us will say no to you.”
7 Ábrahám pedig fölkelt és meghajolt az ország népe, Chész fiai előtt.
Abraham got up and bowed low before the Hittites, the local people,
8 És szólt hozzájuk mondván: Ha úgy akarjátok, hogy eltemessem halottamat magam elől, hallgassatok meg engem és könyörögjetek értem Efrónnál, Cóchár fiánál,
and said to them, “If you agree to help me bury my dead, listen to my proposal. Could you please ask Ephron, son of Zohar,
9 hogy adja nekem a Máchpéla barlangját, mely az övé, mely az ő mezeje végében van; teljes pénzért adja nekem közöttetek sírnak való birtokul.
to sell me the cave of Machpelah that belongs to him, down at the end of his field. I'm willing to pay him the full price here in your presence so I can have my own burial site.”
10 Efrón pedig ült Chész fiai között; és felelt Efrón, a chitti, Ábrahámnak, Chész fiai fülének hallatára, mindazok hallatára, akik bemennek az ő városának kapuján, mondván:
Ephron the Hittite was sitting there among his people. He replied to Abraham in the presence of the Hittites who were there at the town gate.
11 Nem, uram! hallgass meg engem; a mezőt neked adtam és a barlangot, mely benne van, neked adtam azt, népem fiai szeme előtt adtam azt neked; temesd el halottadat.
“No, my lord,” he said. “Please listen to me. I give you the field and the cave that is there. I give it to you and my people are my witnesses. Please go and bury your dead.”
12 És meghajolt Ábrahám az ország népe előtt.
Abraham bowed low before the local people,
13 És szólt Efrónhoz az ország népének füle hallatára, mondván: Bárcsak meghallgatnál engem: megadom a pénzt a mezőért, vedd el tőlem, hogy hadd temessem el halottamat oda.
and said to Ephron so everyone could hear, “Please listen to me. I will pay the price for the field. Take the money and let me go and bury my dead there.”
14 És felelt Efrón Ábrahámnak, mondván neki:
Ephron replied to Abraham, telling him,
15 Uram, hallgass meg engem! Egy föld négyszáz sékel ezüstért, köztem és közted, mi az? Halottadat pedig temesd el.
“My lord, please listen to me. The land is worth four hundred pieces of silver. But what's that between us? Go and bury your dead.”
16 És elértette Ábrahám Efrónt és lemérte Ábrahám Efrónnak az ezüstöt, amelyről szólt Chész fiainak füle hallatára, négyszáz sékel ezüstöt, kelendőt a kereskedőnél.
Abraham accepted Ephron's offer. Abraham weighed out and gave to Ephron the four hundred pieces of silver he'd mentioned, using the standard weights used by merchants, and with the Hittites acting as witnesses.
17 Így maradt Efrón mezeje, mely Máchpélában van, mely Mámré előtt van, a mező és a barlang, mely benne van és minden fa, mely a mezőn van, egész határában, köröskörül,
So the property was legally transferred. It comprised Ephron's field in Machpelah near Mamre, both the field and the cave there, as well as all the trees in the field, and all the area up to the existing boundaries.
18 Ábrahámé vétel gyanánt, Chész fiai szeme előtt, mindazok előtt, akik bemennek az ő városának kapuján,
This all became Abraham's property, and the transaction was witnessed by the Hittites who were there at the town gate.
19 És aztán eltemette Ábrahám Sárát, az ő feleségét Máchpéla mezejének barlangjába, Mámré előtt, az Hebrón; Kánaán országában.
Then Abraham went and buried Sarah his wife in the cave in the field at Machpelah near Mamre (or Hebron) in the land of Canaan.
20 És maradt a mező, meg a barlang, mely benne van, Ábrahámé sírnak való birtokul Chész fiaitól.
Ownership of the field and the cave there was transferred from the Hittites to Abraham to serve as his burial place.
