2 Mózes 1
1 És ezek a nevei Izrael fiainak, akik Egyiptomba jöttek; Jákobbal, kiki az ő házával, jöttek ők.
These are the names of the sons of Israel, who went into Egypt with Jacob. They entered, each one with his house:
2 Rúben, Simon, Lévi és Júda;
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,
3 Isszáchár, Zebúlun és Benjámin;
Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
4 Dán, Náftáli, Gád és Ásér.
Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
5 És volt összes lélekszáma a Jákob ágyékából származóknak: hetven lélek; József pedig Egyiptomban volt.
Therefore, all the souls of those who went forth from Jacob’s thigh were seventy. Now Joseph was in Egypt.
6 És meghalt József, meg mind a testvérei és az az egész nemzedék.
When he had died, along with all of his brothers and all of that generation,
7 Izrael fiai pedig szaporodtak és nyüzsögtek, megsokasodtak és elhatalmasodtak igen nagyon, és megtelt az ország velük.
the sons of Israel increased, and they multiplied like seedlings. And having been strengthened exceedingly, they filled the land.
8 És új király támadt Egyiptom fölött, aki nem ismerte Józsefet.
Meanwhile, there arose a new king over Egypt, who was ignorant of Joseph.
9 és mondta az ő népének: Íme, Izrael fiainak népe több és hatalmasabb nálunknál.
And he said to his people: “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are many, and they are stronger than we are.
10 Nosza, legyünk okosak vele szemben, hogy el ne sokasodjék, mert lesz, ha háború támadna, ő is csatlakoznék ellenségeinkhez, harcolna ellenünk és felmenne az országból.
Come, let us wisely oppress them, lest they multiply; and if any war should advance against us, they may be added to our enemies, and having fought against us, they might depart from the land.”
11 És rendeltek feléje robotfelügyelőket, hogy sanyargassák őt rabmunkáikkal; és épített (Izrael) eleséggyűjtő városokat Fáraónak: Pítómot és Raámszészt.
And so he set over them masters of the works, in order to afflict them with burdens. And they built for Pharaoh the cities of the tabernacles: Pithom and Raamses.
12 De amint sanyargatták őt, úgy sokasodott és terjeszkedett; úgy, hogy irtóztak Izrael fiaitól.
And the more they oppressed them, so much more did they multiply and increase.
13 És az egyiptomiak dolgoztattak Izrael fiaival szigorúsággal.
And the Egyptians hated the sons of Israel, and they afflicted them and mocked them.
14 Megkeserítették az életüket kemény munkával agyagkeveréssel és téglavetéssel és minden munkával a mezőn; minden munkájukat, amelyet velük dolgoztattak, szigorúsággal (végeztették).
And they led their life directly into bitterness, with hard work in clay and brick, and with all kinds of servitude, so that they were being overwhelmed with the works of the land.
15 És mondta Egyiptom királya a héber szülésznőknek, akik közül az egyiknek neve Sifró és a másiknak neve Púó,
Then the king of Egypt spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews, (one of whom one was called Shiphrah, another Puah)
16 és mondta: Midőn szülésnél segédkeztek a héber nőknek, tekintsetek a szülőszékre: ha fiú az, öljétek meg őt, ha pedig leány, maradjon életben.
instructing them: “When you will act as a midwife to the Hebrew women, and the time of delivery has arrived: if it is male, put it to death; if it is female, retain it.”
17 De a szülésznők félték Istent és nem tettek úgy, amint szólt hozzájuk Egyiptom királya, és életben hagyták a fiúgyermekeket.
But the midwives feared God, and so they did not act according to the precept of the king of Egypt, but they kept the males safe.
18 És hivatta Egyiptom királya a szülésznőket és mondta nekik: Miért tettétek ezt a dolgot, hogy életben hagytátok a fiúgyermekeket?
And summoning them, the king said, “What did you intend to do, so that you would save the boys?”
19 És mondták a szülésznők Fáraónak: Mert nem olyanok a héber nők, mint az egyiptomi nők, hanem életrevalók; mielőtt jön hozzájuk a szülésznő, már szültek.
They responded: “The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women. For they themselves have the wisdom of a midwife, and so they give birth before we can come to them.”
20 És jót tett Isten a szülésznőkkel; a nép pedig sokasodott és nagyon elhatalmasodott.
Therefore, God acted favorably toward the midwives. And the people increased, and they were strengthened exceedingly.
21 És volt, minthogy félték a szülésznők Istent, szerzett nekik házakat.
And because the midwives feared God, he built houses for them.
22 Fáraó pedig megparancsolta egész népének, mondván: Minden fiút, aki születik, a folyamba vessetek és minden leányt hagyjátok életben.
Therefore, Pharaoh instructed all his people, saying: “Whatever will be born of the male sex, cast it into the river; whatever will be born of the female sex, retain it.”
