नीतिवचन 3

1 १ हे मेरे पुत्र, मेरी शिक्षा को न भूलना; अपने हृदय में मेरी आज्ञाओं को रखे रहना;

My son, forget not my teaching, and let thy heart keep my commandments;

2 २ क्योंकि ऐसा करने से तेरी आयु बढ़ेगी, और तू अधिक कुशल से रहेगा।

For length of days, and years of life, and peace, will they increase unto thee.

3 ३ कृपा और सच्चाई तुझ से अलग न होने पाएँ; वरन् उनको अपने गले का हार बनाना, और अपनी हृदयरूपी पटिया पर लिखना।

Let kindness and truth not forsake thee; bind them about thy throat; write them upon the table of thy heart:

4 ४ तब तू परमेश्वर और मनुष्य दोनों का अनुग्रह पाएगा, तू अति प्रतिष्ठित होगा।

So shalt thou find grace and good favor in the eyes of God and man.

5 ५ तू अपनी समझ का सहारा न लेना, वरन् सम्पूर्ण मन से यहोवा पर भरोसा रखना।

Trust in the Lord with all thy heart: and upon thy own understanding do not rely.

6 ६ उसी को स्मरण करके सब काम करना, तब वह तेरे लिये सीधा मार्ग निकालेगा।

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he will make level thy paths.

7 ७ अपनी दृष्टि में बुद्धिमान न होना; यहोवा का भय मानना, और बुराई से अलग रहना।

Be not wise in thy own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.

8 ८ ऐसा करने से तेरा शरीर भला चंगा, और तेरी हड्डियाँ पुष्ट रहेंगी।

It will be healing to thy body, and marrow to thy bones.

9 ९ अपनी सम्पत्ति के द्वारा और अपनी भूमि की सारी पहली उपज देकर यहोवा की प्रतिष्ठा करना;

Honor the Lord with thy wealth, and with the first-fruits of all thy products:

10 १० इस प्रकार तेरे खत्ते भरे और पूरे रहेंगे, और तेरे रसकुण्डों से नया दाखमधु उमड़ता रहेगा।

So shall thy storehouses be filled with plenty, and with new wine shall thy presses overflow.

11 ११ हे मेरे पुत्र, यहोवा की शिक्षा से मुँह न मोड़ना, और जब वह तुझे डाँटे, तब तू बुरा न मानना,

The correction of the Lord, my son, do not despise; and feel no loathing for his admonition;

12 १२ जैसे पिता अपने प्रिय पुत्र को डाँटता है, वैसे ही यहोवा जिससे प्रेम रखता है उसको डाँटता है।

Because whomever the Lord loveth he admonisheth; and as a father who delighteth in [his] son.

13 १३ क्या ही धन्य है वह मनुष्य जो बुद्धि पाए, और वह मनुष्य जो समझ प्राप्त करे,

Happy the man that hath found wisdom, and the man that acquireth understanding.

14 १४ जो उपलब्धि बुद्धि से प्राप्त होती है, वह चाँदी की प्राप्ति से बड़ी, और उसका लाभ शुद्ध सोने के लाभ से भी उत्तम है।

For the obtaining of her is better than the obtaining of silver, and better than fine gold is her product.

15 १५ वह बहुमूल्य रत्नों से अधिक मूल्यवान है, और जितनी वस्तुओं की तू लालसा करता है, उनमें से कोई भी उसके तुल्य न ठहरेगी।

She is more precious than pearls; and all the things thou valuest are not equal unto her.

16 १६ उसके दाहिने हाथ में दीर्घायु, और उसके बाएँ हाथ में धन और महिमा हैं।

Length of days is in her right hand: in her left are riches and honor.

17 १७ उसके मार्ग आनन्ददायक हैं, और उसके सब मार्ग कुशल के हैं।

Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.

18 १८ जो बुद्धि को ग्रहण कर लेते हैं, उनके लिये वह जीवन का वृक्ष बनती है; और जो उसको पकड़े रहते हैं, वह धन्य हैं।

A tree of life is she to those that lay hold on her: and every one that firmly graspeth her will be made happy.

19 १९ यहोवा ने पृथ्वी की नींव बुद्धि ही से डाली; और स्वर्ग को समझ ही के द्वारा स्थिर किया।

The Lord hath through wisdom founded the earth: he hath established the heavens through understanding.

20 २० उसी के ज्ञान के द्वारा गहरे सागर फूट निकले, और आकाशमण्डल से ओस टपकती है।

By his knowledge were the depths split open, and the skies drop down the dew.

21 २१ हे मेरे पुत्र, ये बातें तेरी दृष्टि की ओट न होने पाए; तू खरी बुद्धि और विवेक की रक्षा कर,

My son, let them not be removed from thy eyes; keep [before thee] sound wisdom and discretion:

22 २२ तब इनसे तुझे जीवन मिलेगा, और ये तेरे गले का हार बनेंगे।

And they will be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy throat.

23 २३ तब तू अपने मार्ग पर निडर चलेगा, और तेरे पाँव में ठेस न लगेगी।

Then wilt thou walk in safety on thy way, and thy foot will not strike [against aught]:

24 २४ जब तू लेटेगा, तब भय न खाएगा, जब तू लेटेगा, तब सुख की नींद आएगी।

When thou layest thyself down, thou shalt feel no dread; and as thou liest down, thy sleep shall be pleasant.

25 २५ अचानक आनेवाले भय से न डरना, और जब दुष्टों पर विपत्ति आ पड़े, तब न घबराना;

Thou needest not to be afraid of sudden dread, neither of the [unlooked-for] tempest over the wicked, when it cometh.

26 २६ क्योंकि यहोवा तुझे सहारा दिया करेगा, और तेरे पाँव को फंदे में फँसने न देगा।

For the Lord will be thy confidence, and he will guard thy foot from being caught.

27 २७ जो भलाई के योग्य है उनका भला अवश्य करना, यदि ऐसा करना तेरी शक्ति में है।

Withhold not a benefit from him who is deserving it, when it is in the power of thy hand to do it.

28 २८ यदि तेरे पास देने को कुछ हो, तो अपने पड़ोसी से न कहना कि जा कल फिर आना, कल मैं तुझे दूँगा।

Say not unto thy neighbor, Go, and return, and tomorrow will I give: when thou hast it by thee.

29 २९ जब तेरा पड़ोसी तेरे पास निश्चिन्त रहता है, तब उसके विरुद्ध बुरी युक्ति न बाँधना।

Contrive not against thy neighbor any evil, when he dwelleth in safety with thee.

30 ३० जिस मनुष्य ने तुझ से बुरा व्यवहार न किया हो, उससे अकारण मुकद्दमा खड़ा न करना।

Quarrel not with any man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.

31 ३१ उपद्रवी पुरुष के विषय में डाह न करना, न उसकी सी चाल चलना;

Envy not the man of violence, and choose none of his ways.

32 ३२ क्योंकि यहोवा कुटिल मनुष्य से घृणा करता है, परन्तु वह अपना भेद सीधे लोगों पर प्रगट करता है।

For the froward is an abomination to the Lord; but with the upright is his good-will.

33 ३३ दुष्ट के घर पर यहोवा का श्राप और धर्मियों के वासस्थान पर उसकी आशीष होती है।

The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked; but the habitation of the righteous will he bless.

34 ३४ ठट्ठा करनेवालों का वह निश्चय ठट्ठा करता है; परन्तु दीनों पर अनुग्रह करता है।

If [it concern] the scornful he will himself render them a scorn; but unto the lowly doth he give grace.

35 ३५ बुद्धिमान महिमा को पाएँगे, परन्तु मूर्खों की बढ़ती अपमान ही की होगी।

The wise shall inherit glory; but fools shall obtain disgrace as their portion.
